Neuware - In recent years the development of spatial referencing techniques in com puter-based information systems has enormously increased the opportuni ties that exist for the treatment and presentation of both point and interaction data. The extent of this increase has drawn attention to the need fo…r special aggregation and clustering procedures to be developed which enable data to be grouped in an efficient way for analytical pur poses with a minimum loss of detail. In the case of interaction data, economy of representation is particularly important as the analysis is further complicated by the two-way directionality that is inherent in each data set. Procedural rules of this kind are needed not only for descriptive analy sis and spatial accounting but also for hypothesis testing and the develop ment of operational models of spatial interaction. Yet the importance of spatial representation in this kind of research has only recently been fully understood. The first generation of urban development models that were developed in Europe and North America during the 1960's often treated matters of zoning system specification very casually, even though in some cases this imposed severe limits on the interpretation of their findings and it was not until the Centre for Environmental Studies/Cheshire project (Barras et al. , 1971) that a serious attempt was made to put forward general principles which could be used as guidelines in future work.

The thesis which evolved from the research is that energy resource development has lagged behind and constrained economic development in India. This research consists of an analysis of energy supply covering each of the major energy resources. Using information from India's five year plans, the history of energy re source development was compiled by energy sector. A comprehensive eva luation ofIndia's current position with respect to energy resources was under taken to provide a perspective on future development possibilities. Alternative policy options were presented in the analysis of each energy re source. These options were considered in providing a set of overall policy suggestions for development of energy supplies in India. Dedication This volume is dedicated to my wonderful wife, Jean, who patiently endured the weeks, months and years it took to complete. No words can express my feelings for her and the sacrifices she has made, but this token gesture is the least I can do. Freud, they might argue, was not only (and very explicitly) a psychologist, but also (and equally expli…citly) a clinical psychologist, whose most immediate preoccupation was that of trying to cure the mental illnesses of his patients. Furthermore, he was a psychologist who insisted on relating his theories as closely as possible to biological and physiological facts. All this, of course, is true. But to adopt this view as one which distinctly marks Freud off from sociology is a basic mistake, and one which shows how sadly subjects which were once seen as being essentially interrelated have been forced into false separation by the current vogue of'specialization'-necessary and correct when it is soundly conceived, but intellectually disastrous when it is not. It is worthwhile to recall that all the major thinkers who contributed to the making of sociology-from Comte and Spencer to Ward, Giddings, Tonnies, Durkheim, Hobhouse, Weber, Simmel, Pareto (this could be a very long list I)-were, in fact, convinced about the close relationships between biology, psychology and sociology. The same is true of all the major anthropologists. The simple truth is that all these men were critically and creatively participating in the revolution which was taking place in man's approach to his knowledge of nature, and of his own nature and place within it. 220 pp. Englisch.

Programmers assigned to maintenance tasks come to consider their role as minor, their work tedious, and sometimes take such an assignment as an invitation to seek a job elsewhere. This small, ethnically plural society was torn by severe political conflict. Elections in November 1…973 had brought an end to political collaboration between Creoles and Hindustanis, the country's two largest ethnic groups; and the Creoles, now in control of the government, were resolutely pushing (over Hindustani opposition) to sever their colonial ties with the Netherlands. But defections from the Creole benches during the summer of 1975 had produced a virtual stalemate in the legislature, heightening fears that the government would act unilaterally. The failure of Creole and Hindustani leaders to resolve their differences led many observers in both the Netherlands and Surinam to predict a collapse of democracy and/or violent conflict once independence was proclaimed. Ironically, the dramatic, last-minute resolution of the struggle precipitated not only general jubilation and relief, but also self-congratulation, as the leaders of Surinam's multiethnic society, long priding themselves on achieve ments in harmonious understanding, pulled out all stops in their indepen dence day oratory. No-one could forget the nightmare of the preceding few years. But neither could anyone familiar with Surinam's historical develop ment flatly reject the rhetoric as being without some foundation. In fact, Surinam, while severely tested by the most complex multi-ethnic population in the Caribbean, does have a record of which she can be proud and which deserves to be more widely known. 248 pp. Englisch.

What was still described in 1963 as its 'promise' (Reader, 1963) became a decade later the unequivocal assertio…n: 'Sociology has already contributed much to medicine . has (in its work related to medicine) developed a distinct body of knowledge, and in fact, reached the position where it can contribute substantially to decision making in medicine'. (Kendall and Reader, 1972) As it has established its position, both as a legitimate sub-field of sociology as a collaborator with the medical professions, there is evidence of increasing attention by medical sociology to the applica tions of its knowledge. The literature reveals a remarkable degree of concern about its development. (Caudill, 1953; Clausen, 1956; Reader and Goss, 1959; Reader, 1963; Suchman, 1964; Graham, 1964; Bloom, 1965; McKin lay, 1972). Most of its continuing self-scrutiny, however, was - at least until recently - focused on the evaluation of its contribution to knowledge. We seem now to have found security in the legitimacy of this contribution, and to be turning to the effort to establish an organized dimension of applied social science - of which an example is seen in table 2.1. Williams, first in 1963 and again in 1972, sought to show how the knowledge of medical sociology was actually being applied. During that time I have seen the job of a manager change almost out of recognition in both complexity and difficulty. For the last five ofthose y…ears I have held ajob which has been much concerned with the problems which managers face under these cir cumstances, and I have been in the position to discuss these pro blems with people doing similar jobs in other large organisations, who have in turn often asked me for advice on their problems. The result has been to build up a general picture of the manager in large and complex industrial organisations and of those practices which will help him or her to be effective and those which will not. I suspect that the picture which emerges is one which may have some validity for large and complex organisations in other spheres - trade unions, for instance, or the civil service - but I have no first-hand evidence to show whether this is so or not. It is a picture which is certainly not so relevant for small organisations. The authors have indeed mastered the art of simplicity, combining profound knowledge with an airy format, to a degree that is hard to emulate. All the salient features o. fpacing are presented here, from history and pathology to complications and long-range follow-up. Perhaps it is a mark of excellence, rather than a confession of my personal ignorance, to say that there is scarcely a section that did not provide me with a new bit of information or a new insight. Permanent pacing o. f the heart is so common nowadays, at least in the more affluent sections 0. 1' the world, that almost every person must know of someone with an implanted pacemaker. In the United States, where there are more than 100, 000 new implants each year, almost every sizeable hospital has a pacemaker implantation service and almost every physician in a related field is interested in doing this surgery. All that should really be required is that the surgeon make himself an expert. 84 pp. Englisch.

With the former a…im in mind, the explanations have been made as self-explanatory as possible, and a complete key to the exercises has been provided in an appendix. In the interest of simplicity and ease of reference and review, each grammatical topic is discussed as fully as practicable in one place, and an effort has been made to include only one major grammatical feature in any one chapter. But since a solid foundation can more effectively be achieved through study under trained supervision or with a native speaker of the language, the presentation has also been made adapt able to this type of study. The brief fill-in exercises in each lesson provide a model for any amount of drill, and the dialogues and readings included at irregular intervals as well as the review selec tions placed after every few chapters can provide the necessary added practice in supervised instruction. Only later on did these injuries occasion renewed intensive research in this field of neurosurgery. Among the factors which have promote…d this development is the operating microscope with more refined surgical techniques. Of course, surgery of peripheral nerve injuries in peacetime is not to be compared with that in wartime. Only rapid wound healing enables a secondary suture to be performed at a favorable time, after about four weeks. Besides in most cases the defect of substance is not as great as in war injuries, in which the so-called 'critical resection length' (Seddon) was the cause of the greatest difficulties and consti tuted the crucial obstacle to good success. The experienced surgeons of the Second World War always knew that the specified dimensions were far too great for the critical resection length. They could only resort to attempting a suture even when there was a great gap be tween the ends of the nerves. Precise information was not available on direct damage to the axis cylinder or alteration due to vascular factors when stretching the various nerves, above all during the later mobilization of joint decompressions. In my opinion, the experimental investigations of the author can make a contribution here. The precisely executed and afterwards carefully analyzed experiments appear very likely to be applicable to human conditions as regards their percentages of total nerve length. 100 pp. Englisch.

It has long been a commonplace of 17th century history that the Anglo-Dutch Wars were the product of 'commercial ri…valry'. This essay, first published twenty years ago, attempted to analyse and redefine this overworked traditional concept so as to explain more precisely how it led to naval wars between the Dutch and the English. Two idees fixes of contemporary English thought seemed especially significant; one was the persistent consciousness of English inferiority and backwardness in economic affairs when compared with the Dutch; the other, compounding this, was the equally persistent conviction that strategically, England seemed well placed to wreck the Dutch maritime economy and bring the Republic to her knees in a naval war. These obsessive beliefs combined naturally with the specific influences and motives of powerful political and commercial lobbies to stoke the fires of aggression. Failing over several decades to make any visible progress by more or less peaceful policies, they turned, first, to economic warfare by means of propaganda and pseudo-legal claims to maritime sovereignty; finally (in 1652) to all-out eco nomic and naval warfare. 184 pp. Englisch.

What was still described in 1963 as its 'promise' (Reader, 1963) became a decade later the unequivocal assertion: '…Sociology has already contributed much to medicine . has (in its work related to medicine) developed a distinct body of knowledge, and in fact, reached the position where it can contribute substantially to decision making in medicine'. (Kendall and Reader, 1972) As it has established its position, both as a legitimate sub-field of sociology as a collaborator with the medical professions, there is evidence of increasing attention by medical sociology to the applica tions of its knowledge. The literature reveals a remarkable degree of concern about its development. (Caudill, 1953; Clausen, 1956; Reader and Goss, 1959; Reader, 1963; Suchman, 1964; Graham, 1964; Bloom, 1965; McKin lay, 1972). Most of its continuing self-scrutiny, however, was - at least until recently - focused on the evaluation of its contribution to knowledge. We seem now to have found security in the legitimacy of this contribution, and to be turning to the effort to establish an organized dimension of applied social science - of which an example is seen in table 2.1. Williams, first in 1963 and again in 1972, sought to show how the knowledge of medical sociology was actually being applied.
