Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -I have been working on this book since leaving Russia in April of 1972. It was my wish to write this book in English, and there were what seemed to me to be serious reasons for doing so. In recent years there has appeared a wealth of literature, in Russian, about Russia. As a rule, this literature has been published outside the USSR by authors who still live in the Soviet Union or who have only recently left it. A fair amount of important literature is being translated into English, but I believe it will be read main ly by specialists in Russian studies, or by those who have a great interest in the subject already. The majority of Russian authors write, of course, for the Russian reader or for an imagined Western public. It is my feeling that Russian authors have serious difficulties in understanding the men tality of Westerners, and that there still exists a gap between the visions of Russians and non-Russians. I have made my humble attempt to bridge ~his gap and I will be happy if I am even partly successful. The Russian world is indeed fascinating. Many people who visit Russia for a few days or weeks find it a country full of historical charm, fantastic architecture and infinite mystery. For many inside the country, especial ly for those in conflict with the Soviet authorities.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 272 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -The purpose of this book is to isolate and draw attention to the most important problem-solving techniques typically encountered in undergradu ate mathematics and to illustrate their use by interesting examples and problems not easily found in other sources. Each section features a single idea, the power and versatility of which is demonstrated in the examples and reinforced in the problems. The book serves as an introduction and guide to the problems literature (e.g., as found in the problems sections of undergraduate mathematics journals) and as an easily accessed reference of essential knowledge for students and teachers of mathematics. The book is both an anthology of problems and a manual of instruction. It contains over 700 problems, over one-third of which are worked in detail. Each problem is chosen for its natural appeal and beauty, but primarily to provide the context for illustrating a given problem-solving method. The aim throughout is to show how a basic set of simple techniques can be applied in diverse ways to solve an enormous variety of problems. Whenever possible, problems within sections are chosen to cut across expected course boundaries and to thereby strengthen the evidence that a single intuition is capable of broad application. Each section concludes with 'Additional Examples' that point to other contexts where the technique is appropriate.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 352 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -The aims of this Introduction are to characterize the philosophy of science and technology, henceforth PS & T, to locate it on the map ofiearning, and to propose criteria for evaluating work in this field. 1. THE CHASM BETWEEN S & T AND THE HUMANITIES It has become commonplace to note that contemporary culture is split into two unrelated fields: science and the rest, to deplore this split - and to do is some truth in the two cultures thesis, and even nothing about it. There greater truth in the statement that there are literally thousands of fields of knowledge, each of them cultivated by specialists who are in most cases indifferent to what happens in the other fields. But it is equally true that all fields of knowledge are united, though in some cases by weak links, forming the system of human knowledge. Because of these links, what advances, remains stagnant, or declines, is the entire system of S & T. Throughout this book we shall distinguish the main fields of scientific and technological knowledge while at the same time noting the links that unite them. 280 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -'This volume represents a broad survey of current research in the fields of nonlinear analysis and nonlinear differential equations. It is dedicated to Djairo G. de Figueiredo on the occasion of his 70th birthday. The collection of 34 research and survey articles reflects the wide range of interests of Djairo de Figueiredo, including: various types of nonlinear partial differential equations and systems, in particular equations of elliptic, parabolic, hyperbolic and mixed type; equations of Schrödinger, Maxwell, Navier-Stokes, Bernoulli-Euler, Seiberg-Witten, Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg; existence, uniqueness and multiplicity of solutions; critical Sobolev growth and connected phenomena; qualitative properties, regularity and shape of solutions; inequalities, a-priori estimates and asymptotic behavior; various applications to models such as asymptotic membranes, nonlinear plates and inhomogeneous fluids. The contributions of so many distinguished mathematicians to this volume document the importance and lasting influence of the mathematical research of Djairo de Figueiredo. The book thus is a source of new ideas and results and should appeal to graduate students and mathematicians interested in nonlinear problems.'Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 358 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -I have purposely limited myself to a rather brief statement in this introduc tion, in order that the summing up be not misrepresented for the discursive development of the whole. There is something more than mildly dangerous in setting oneself a series of goals in an introduction only to find them happily attained in the conclusion, as if getting from the beginning to the end was simply a question of transition. Of course, the destination of a speculative presentation includes the process of development in such a way that the end is always implicitly the beginning: each configuration simply forms a deter minate moment within the on-going manifestation of the 'absolute'. It is around Hegel's concept of the absolute, how it is known and how it presents itself, which the bulk of our discussion turns. We may say tentatively that the absolute speaks. This speaking is the manifestation of the absolute itself, not a dissimulation or mere appearance, and consequently can be known and known most perfectly in language. In Hegel's system, this speak ing or discourse has exhausted itself and is complete, but in what manner this 'close' is achieved remains the question which disturbs and provokes our own speech in what is to come.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 202 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -This volume contains the text of the twenty-five papers presented at two workshops entitled Maximum-Entropy and Bayesian Methods in Applied Statistics, which were held at the University of Wyoming from June 8 to 10, 1981, and from August 9 to 11, 1982. The workshops were organized to bring together researchers from different fields to critically examine maxi mum-entropy and Bayesian methods in science, engineering, medicine, oceanography, economics, and other disciplines. An effort was made to maintain an informal environment where ideas could be easily ~xchanged. That the workshops were at least partially successful is borne out by the fact that there have been two succeeding workshops, and the upcoming Fifth Workshop promises to be the largest of all. These workshops and their proceedings could not have been brought to their final form without the substantial help of a number of people. The support of David Hofmann, the past chairman, and Glen Rebka, Jr. , the present chairman of the Physics Department of the University of Wyoming, has been strong and essential. Glen has taken a special interest in seeing that the proceedings have received the support required for their comple tion. The financial support of the Office of University Research Funds, University of Wyoming, is gratefully acknowledged. The secretarial staff, in particular Evelyn Haskell, Janice Gasaway, and Marce Mitchum, of the University of Wyoming Physics Department has contributed a great number of hours in helping C. Ray Smith organize and direct the workshops.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 506 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -These essays span a period of fourteen years. The earliest was written in 1960, the latest in 1983. They all represent various attempts to understand the motives and the central concepts of Husserl's transcen dental phenomenology, and to locate the latter in the background of other varieties of transcendental philosophy. Implicitly, they also con tain a defense of transcendental philosophy, and make attempts to respond to the more familiar criticisms against it. It is hoped that they will contribute to a better understanding not only of Husserl's transcen dental phenomenology but also of transcendental philosophy in gener al. The ordering of the essays is not chronological. They are rather divided thematically into three groups. The first group of six essays is concerned with relating Husserlian phenomenology to more contem porary analytic concerns: in fact, the opening essay on Husserl and Frege establishes a certain continuity of concern with my last published book with that title. Of these, Essay 2 was written for an American Philosophical Association, Eastern Division symposium in which the other symposiast was John Searle. The discussion in that symposium concentrated chiefly on the relation between intentionality and causali ty - which led me to write Essay 6, later read as the Gurwitsch Memo rial Lecture at the Society for Phenomenology and Existential Philos ophy meetings in 1982 at Penn State.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 284 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -The mathematical theory of non-life insurance developed much later than the theory of life insurance. The problems that occur in the former field are far more intricate for several reasons: 1. In the field oflife insurance, the company usually has to pay a claim on the policy only once: the insured dies or the policy matures only once. It is with only a few particular types of policy (for instance, sickness insurance, when the insured starts working again after a period of sickness) that a valid claim can be made on a number of different occasions. On the other hand, the general rule in non-life insurance is that the policyholder is liable to be the victim of several losses (in automobile insurance, of course, but also in burglary and fire insurance, householders' comprehensive insurance, and so on). 2. In the field of life insurance, the amount to be paid by the company excluding any bonuses-is determined at the inception of the policy. For the various types of life insurance contracts, the sum payable on death or at maturity of the policy is known in advance. In the field of non-life insurance, the amount of a loss is a random variable: the cost of an automobile crash, the partial or totalloss of a building as a result of fire, the number and nature of injuries, and so forth.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 272 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -Much research has been done recently, and more is now in progress, to increase the effectiveness under tropical conditions of methods which have been developed in Europe for preserving timber. This book attempts to bring together the results of some of these studies. I have not attempted to cover the tropical zones of Central and South America as this would have extended the book beyond its limits. But I am grateful to the authors who have contributed chapters dealing with the different aspects and solutions of the problems of the tropical areas of the Old World. The International Research Group for Wood Preservation (The I.R.G.) at its annual meetings in different countries has provided a valuable forum for cooperation in this developing field. Anyone concerned with the subject would be well advised to study the publications issued by this group. Their office is at Drottning Kristinas vag 47C S - 11428 Stockholm, Sweden. Although timber is a renewable resource there is every reason why it should not be wasted through premature decay or the ravages of termites etc., when effective measures for its preservation are available and, if correctly applied, can greatly reduce the cost of maintaining timber structures.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 288 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -Recent developments in Science and Technology have removed the boundaries betwe~n the so-called 'fundamental' and 'applied' fields of research. This has been particularly evident in the rapidly expanding geophysical sciences with their far reaching applications. Fundamental geophysical studies of surface, subsurface and crustal structures where gravity investigations play an important role, are of immediate potential importance in defining major structural features or geological units which may control or influence the development of metallogenic provinces, petroleum potential areas or coal fields. Gravity studies in India have a long history and tradition. The earliest gravity measurements were made with two brass pendulums loaned by the Royal Society of England, when Basevi and Heaviside established 30 gravity pendulum stations between Cape Comorin and Ladakh during 1865 to 1873. Over the subsequent years, large areas of the country have been systematically covered through gravimeters and a number of regional and detailed studies have been undertaken by various agencies like Survey of India, Geological Survey of India (GSI), Oil and Natural Gas Commission (ONGC), National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) and a number of universities. Assistance was provided by late Prof. G. P. Woollard and his former students Muckenfuss, Bonini, Shankaranarayan and Murali Manghnani, who have connected India to the international gravity net work. Gravity studies carried out by the Survey of India have been of great value in geodetic studies. 236 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -Breast cancer, being a disease with very high prevalence in the female population, has permanently attracted the attention of biologists, biochemists, pathologists, surgeons, and oncologists. In the U.S. alone approximately 120,000 new cases are diagnosed and 37,000 deaths a year are recorded as an outcome. Early diagnosis, clear cut prognosis and the hope of new therapeutic approaches has spurred the enthusiasm of researchers, who with the advent of newer methodologies, tried to employ it in different approaches to the breast cancer patient. In spite of the efforts devoted towards the creation of new approaches, reagents and procedures taking advantage of special characteristics of the breast tissue were slow to come. In general, most diagnostic and prognostic techniques were those shared and applied to other carcinomas. In the early seventies we discovered the first sets of antigens associated with breast epithelial tissue both in the mouse and the human. The recognition of such group of molecules, present in the milk fat globule membrane, gave impetus to several studies in these areas. These mammary cell surface antigens proved useful in several diagnostic approaches such as radioimaging, histochemical and serum assay procedures. However, the apparently inherent limitations of polyclonal antibodies reduced the impact of these novel approaches.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 340 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -This atlas deals with conditions commonly encountered in the male genital tract. Whilst the majority of illustra tions are photomicrographs, photographs of macro scopic specimens are also used to illustrate important features in distinguishing different pathological con ditions. Special emphasis is placed on the small biopsy specimens obtained from prostate and testis in modern urological practice and the importance of clinico pathological co-operation in pathological practice is stressed. Recent advances in our knowledge of testicu lar tumours are discussed and illustrated. The text is not entirely descriptive and attempts to give an intellectual framework around which histopathological diagnosis in this field can be practised. A modest number of references are included; they have not been singled out as representing milestones in the development of our knowledge of these conditions - the choice has rather more centred upon recent reports from which a litera ture search can be mounted if required. The atlas in no way pretends to be an encyclopaedic reference of con ditions of the male genital tract but attempts to provide an up-to-date comprehensive discussion of the histo pathology of this system. Acknowledgements I am most grateful to Mr Keith Gordon for developing all the photomicrographs and to Mr Geoff Gilbert and his staff in the Audio-Visual Department of the City Hospital who took the majority of the macroscopic illustrations. I must particularly thank my secretary, Mrs Dorothy Clay ton, for typing and retyping my draft chapters and for deciphering my hieroglyphics. 88 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -This book is the result of a symposium dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the Delta Institute for Hydrobiological Research in Yerseke, the Netherlands. The primary idea did not come from one of the scientists working in this Institute, but from the second editor. Long before the Institute celebrated itsjubilee on 20-23 October 1982, he expressed his feelings to the other editors, that the time had come for a second European symposium on the ecology of coastal vegetation. The first symposium on this theme was held in Norwich, 12-16 September 1977, being the first meeting of the European Ecological Symposium. He only So the working group Salt waited for a suitable opportunity. Well, the 25th anniversary was a good one. Marsh Ecosystems of the Delta Institute, in close collaboration with him, adopted Dr. Rozema's initiative and set about realizing his idea. Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - This volume represents a part of the scientific proceedings of the Sixth Annual Meeting of the American Section of the International Society for Heart Research that was held in Oklahoma City from September 13-15, 1984. The chapters have been grouped according to the content of invited symposia on cardiovascular topics ranging from electrophysiology, autonomic control of the circulation, aging of the myocardium, mechanisms of cardiovascular injury, cultured heart cell studies, etc. Abstracts of all the papers presented at this meeting are included in Volume 16 (Supp. 1) of the Journal of Molecular and Cellular Cardiology. Since our understanding of the pathobiology of cardiovascular injury requires integrating knowledge from both basic and clinical sciences, the information presented in this volume extends from fundamental biochemical processes to pharmacological agents required to treat complex cardiac arrhythmias. At the molecular level, the structural lipids of the sarcolemma may be altered during myocardial ischemia; the role of free radicals in this process is one emerging area of active study. At the subcellular level, plasma membranes provide the anatomical basis for maintenance of optimal potentials of excitable cells; the anatomy and physiology of the sarcolemma ultimately determines the response to drugs and metabolic perturbants. At the cellular level, much progress has been made in our understanding of cultured and adult myocytes during ischemia and hypoxia; in particular, the electrophysiology of these model systems is well understood and several chapters address this approach.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu.

17, 69121 Heidelberg 448 pp. Deutsch.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Recently, there has been a lot of interest in provably 'good' pseudo-random number generators [lo, 4, 14, 31. These cryptographically secure generators are 'good' in the sense that they pass all probabilistic polynomial time statistical tests. However, despite these nice properties, the secure generators known so far suffer from the han- cap of being inefiicient; the most efiicient of these take n2 steps (one modular multip- cation, n being the length of the seed) to generate one bit. Pseudc-random number g- erators that are currently used in practice output n bits per multiplication (n2 steps). An important open problem was to output even two bits on each multiplication in a cryptographically secure way. This problem was stated by Blum, Blum & Shub [3] in the context of their z2 mod N generator. They further ask: how many bits can be o- put per multiplication, maintaining cryptographic security In this paper we state a simple condition, the XOR-Condition and show that any generator satisfying this condition can output logn bits on each multiplication. We show that the XOR-Condition is satisfied by the lop least significant bits of the z2-mod N generator. The security of the z2 mod N generator was based on Quadratic Residu- ity [3]. This generator is an example of a Trapdoor Generator [13], and its trapdoor properties have been used in protocol design. We strengthen the security of this gene- tor by proving it as hard as factoring. 508 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This is the first outcome of our effort in ASIAN LINK PROJECT to construct the econometric models of Asian developing countries and analyze their inter-dependence with major trading partners, the United States and Japan. The model we present here is called Asian Link System. The countries in this system include Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, China, the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Japan and the United States. They are covered by national models. The rest of the world is divided into several regions and treated by simple proto-type models. The main characteristics of Asian Link System are to deal with the inter-dependent relations between Asian developing countries on the one hand and Japan and United States on the other hand. Here are presented these national models and the Asian Link System with the underlying statistical data, so that any econometrician can re-estimate our models and check the results of our research work. Nowadays most articles and books in econometrics report only the final results or conclusions of research so that no other econometrician can re-calculate or re examine the findings. This is very serious in the empirical research, because as theorists may make mistakes, positive economists do commit errors or miss some possible considerations. Unless statiscal data are offered, other econometricians cannot make suggestions or improve the models. This is the main reason why empirical research in econometrics or applied econometrics are not making substantial progress in recent years. 352 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The literature on systems seems to have been growing almost expo nentially during the last decade and one may question whether there is need for another book. In the author's view, most of the literature on 'systems' is either technical in mathematical sense or technical ifF engineering sense (with technical words such as noise, filtering etc. ) and not easily accessible to researchers is other fields, in particular not to economists, econometricians and quantitative researchers in so cial sciences. This is unfortunate, because achievements in the rather 'young' science of system theory and system engineering are of impor tance for modelling, estimation and regulation (control) problems in other branches of science. State space mode~iing; the concept of ob servability and controllability; the mathematical formulations of sta bility; the so-called canonical forms; prediction error e~timation; optimal control and Kalman filtering are some examples of results of system theory and system engineering which proved to be successful in practice. A brief summary of system theoretical concepts is given in Chapter II where an attempt has been made to translate the concepts in to the more 'familiar' language used in econometrics and social sciences by means of examples. By interrelating concepts and results from system theory with those from econometrics and social sciences, the author has attempted to narrow the gap between the more technical sciences such as engi neering and social sciences and econometrics, and to contribute to either side. 200 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This treatment of molecular and atomic physics is primarily meant as a textbook. It is intended for both chemists and physicists. It can be read without much knowledge of quantum mechanics or mathematics, since all such details are explained-. It has developed through a series of lectures at the Royal Institute of Technology. The content is to about 50 % theoretical and to 50 % experimental. The reason why the authors, who are experimentalists, went into theory is the following. When we during the beginning of the 1970's measured photo electron spectra of organic molecules, it appeared to be impossible to understand them by use of available theoretical calculations. To handle hydrocarbons we ( together with C. Fridh ) constructed in 1972 a purely empirical procedure, SPINDO [1] which has proved to be useful, but the extension to molecules with hetero atoms appeared to be difficult. One of us ( L.A.) proposed then another purely ~~E!E!~~! EE2~~~~E~ ( Hydrogenic Atoms in Molecules, HAM/1, unpublished), in which the Fock matrix elements f5.y were parametrized using Slater's shielding concept. The self-repulsion was compensated by a term '-1'. The ~~2~~_~ff2E~, HAM/2 [2] , started from the total energy E:. of the molecule. The atomic parts of L used the Slater shielding constants, and the bond parts of E. were taken from SPINDO. The Fock matrix elements Fpv were then obtained from E in a conventional way. 304 pp. Englisch.
