It has been estimated that about 3 million of the estimated 4 million angina suff…erers in the United states have frequent episodes of silent myocardial ischemia. Although it is not possible to define how many Americans die due to silent ischemia, it has been suggested that the mortality rate may exceed hundreds of thousands of victims annually. Unfortunately, there still remains a lack of definitive information as to why some ischemic events are painless. Some suggest the concept that the location and size of the myocardium at jeopardy relates to pain, that the pain threshold varies from patient to patient or that there are neurological deficits in the myocardium of some patients with silent ischemia. Abnormalities in myocardial perfusion and function can occur without pain. An interesting observation presented by several investigators has been that when a coronary artery is occluded in man, no ischemic pain is perceived for the first 30 seconds. Only after a 30 second period or so of occlusion does angina occur. An even more confusing observation is that some 30 second periods of occlusion of the same vessel in the same patient results in angina while the next occlusion can be a totally silent event.

Special emphasis has been placed on bringing together copies of laws and lists of agencies as appendices. The appendices give the reader easy access to materials that will help clarify the permit process.

It sets out to develop the algebraic and geometric tools needed to formulate and to prove boundedly controlled analogues of many of the standard results of algebraic topology and simple homotopy theory. One of the themes of the book is to show that in many cases the proof of a standard result can be easily adapted to prove the boundedly controlled analogue and to provide the details, often omitted in other treatments, of this adaptation. For this reason, the book does not require of the reader an extensive background. However, ultrasonic images can often be hampered by pulmonary and intestinal gas and by bony and adipose tissue. In 1956 Wild an…d Reid reported the first results of transrectal ultrasound of the prostate [1]. In 1976 Lutz introduced an A-mode ultrasonic probe which could be introduced via the biopsy channel of an endoscope [2]. In 1978 and 1980 Hisanaga performed echocardiography using an ultrasonic transducer attached to the tip of a flexible instrument [3, 4]. In animal studies and later on in humans Di Magno has used an echoendoscope in which a small transducer was attached at the tip of a fiberoptic endoscope [5, 6]. The purpose was to overcome the limitations of transcutaneous ultrasonography by directly approaching target lesions with a high-frequency ultrasound source via the gastroin testinallumen. SJlbsequently, the first series of endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) examinations were reported during the European congress in Stockholm [7]. The purpose of this book is: 1. This approach suggest (and is simplified by) the simultaneous treatment of the Schubert subvarieties of Grassmannian. Other methods have not been neglected, however. Principal radical systems are discussed in detail, and one section is devoted to each of invariant and representation theory. While the book is primarily a research monograph, it serves also as a reference source and the reader requires only the basics of commutative algebra together with some supplementary material found in the appendix. In the latter category, the problems of inference for stochastic processes (which arise com monly in engineering and biological applications) come to mind. Classes of estimating functions seem to be promising in this respect. The monograph examines some of the consequences of extending standard concepts of ancillarity, sufficiency and complete ness into this setting. The reader should note that the development is mathematically 'mature' in its use of Hilbert space methods but not, we believe, mathematically difficult. This is in keeping with our desire to construct a theory that is rich in statistical tools for infer ence without the difficulties found in modern developments, such as likelihood analysis of stochastic processes or higher order methods, to name but two. The fundamental notions of orthogonality and projection are accessible to a good undergraduate or beginning graduate student. In many a la…boratory extensive studies are un derway of factors determining tumour tissue response to irradiation and of methods for exerting directional effect upon those factors. Such studies have revealed that, at least at the cellular level, a considerable number of factors manifest themselves which are respon sible for radiation effect (1] Among those are: spatial heteroge neity of tumour cell population producing radioresistant cell reser ves (hypoxic cells of solid tumours); differing radiosensitivities of cell life cycle phases; intrinsic dynamics of the processes of radi ation damage and postradiation cell recovery; induction of prolifera tive processes in response to the death of some cells within the po pulation; the stochastic nature of cell kinetics and complicated in teraction between individual cell subpopulations corresponding to di fferent tumour loci. The modules are not intended to be used in isolation, but rather to serve as an introductory survey which will enable students to grasp the broad outlines of the subject. One of the themes of the book is to show that in many cases the proof of a standard result can be easily adapted to prove the boundedly controlled analogue and to provide the details, often omitted in other treatments, of this adaptation. For this reason, the book does not require of the reader an extensive background. The format of the questions has been arranged so that the number of true or false answers varies and we have taken pains to eliminate the ambiguities which tend to creep into multiple choice question papers. In compiling these questions, we have attempted to incorporate a number of key facts and it will be seen that these have occasionally been repeated for emphasis. A surprisingly large amount of information is contained in questions and answers, and simply reading through both can be a useful learning experience in itself. The questions have been aimed at the medical student level but it is hoped that they may be of some value to general practitioners outside ophthalmology and perhaps also to postgraduates. The computerised Kuder-Richardson reliability index, which measures the consistency of a student's perform ance, has shown these questions to be reliable in assessing a students' knowledge. Professor Symoens succeeded in drafting the most competent team for his task. I am sure that all colleagues working in vegetation analysis will be grateful to them that they have taken the time and energy to complete their chapters. Handbook articles are not easy to write and certainly not easy to edit. in the landscape are treated. The The major aquatic components vegetation analysts will welcome the fact that certain physiological and ecological processes of water plants are covered for which otherwise they would have to consult the limnological literature.
