At first glance this may seem a straight-forward task, for the formulation of its concept suggests applicability to any combinatorial optimization problem. All… that is needed to run annealing on such a problem is a unique representation for each configuration, a procedure for measuring its quality, and a neighbor relation. Much more is needed however for obtaining acceptable results consistently in a reasonably short time. It is even doubtful whether the problem can be formulated such that annealing becomes an adequate approach for all instances of an optimization problem. Questions such as what is the best formulation for a given instance, and how should the process be controlled, have to be answered. Although much progress has been made in the years after the introduction of the concept into the field of combinatorial optimization in 1981, some important questions still do not have a definitive answer. In this book the reader will find the foundations of annealing in a self-contained and consistent presentation. Although the physical analogue from which the con cept emanated is mentioned in the first chapter, all theory is developed within the framework of markov chains. To achieve a high degree of instance independence adaptive strategies are introduced.

The same series of events occurred with regards to peritoneal dialysis with the introduction of the Tenckhoff catheter and the need for gaining a permanent access to the peritoneum for chronic ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) therapy. With time, however, problems relating to vascular and peritoneal access have forced many nephrologists to give up their surgery; meanwhile, many surgeons have become quite expert in some sophisticated techniques relating to dial ysis (e. g., vessel grafting, prosthesis implantation, etc.). Today, whether or not involved in this type of surgery, both nephrologists and surgeons remain interested in knowing all available access devices for dialysis as well as the surgical techniques involved. However, all nephrologists involved in dialysis must know how to prevent or treat complications related to dialysis access. Thus, it appeared to me to be quite advisable to have a book in my series, Topics in Renal Medicine, dealing with vascular and peritoneal access for dialysis.

The most important one is that the products are manufactured according to customer specifications and they will not be manufactured unless…they have been ordered. Other elements are the set-ups on the machines, which make a clustering of orders necessary, the backlogging of late orders, a production process with one bottle-neck and a stochastic demand. The purpose is to find a simple production rule, which offers possibilities for a simple adaptation to the varying wishes or to additional complications. The production rules under consideration are well-known heuristics such as the Silver-Meal heuristic and the Wagner-Whitin heuristic, which can be adapted for backlogging and for the stochastic demand. Also a new, simple rule is introduced: the (x,T)-rule. To determine and compare the performance of the production rules different techniques have been used, such as simulation, dynamic programming and markovian models. It is concerned with simulation ofthe flow of water, together with its consequences, using numerical methods on com puters. There is not a great deal of difference with computational hydrodynamics or computational fluid dynamics, but these terms are too much restricted to the fluid as such. It seems to be typical of practical problems in hydraulics that they are rarely directed to the flow by itself, but rather to some consequence of it, such as forces on obstacles, transport of heat, sedimentation of a channel or decay of a pollutant. All these subjects require very similar numerical methods and this is why they are treated together in this book. Therefore, I have preferred to use the term computational hydraulics. Accordingly, I have attempted to show the wide field of application by giving examples of a great variety of such practical problems. Purpose of the Book It is getting a normal situation that an engineer is required to solve some engineering problem involving fluid flow, using standard and general-purpose computer programs available in many organizations. The most important one is that the products are manufactured according to customer specifications and they will not be manufactured unless they… have been ordered. Other elements are the set-ups on the machines, which make a clustering of orders necessary, the backlogging of late orders, a production process with one bottle-neck and a stochastic demand. The purpose is to find a simple production rule, which offers possibilities for a simple adaptation to the varying wishes or to additional complications. The production rules under consideration are well-known heuristics such as the Silver-Meal heuristic and the Wagner-Whitin heuristic, which can be adapted for backlogging and for the stochastic demand. Also a new, simple rule is introduced: the (x,T)-rule. To determine and compare the performance of the production rules different techniques have been used, such as simulation, dynamic programming and markovian models. Neuware -What is Computational Hydraulics Computational hydraulics is one of the many fields of science in which the application of computers gives rise to a new way of working, which is intermediate between purely theoretical and experimental. It… is concerned with simulation ofthe flow of water, together with its consequences, using numerical methods on com puters. There is not a great deal of difference with computational hydrodynamics or computational fluid dynamics, but these terms are too much restricted to the fluid as such. It seems to be typical of practical problems in hydraulics that they are rarely directed to the flow by itself, but rather to some consequence of it, such as forces on obstacles, transport of heat, sedimentation of a channel or decay of a pollutant. All these subjects require very similar numerical methods and this is why they are treated together in this book. Therefore, I have preferred to use the term computational hydraulics. Accordingly, I have attempted to show the wide field of application by giving examples of a great variety of such practical problems. Purpose of the Book It is getting a normal situation that an engineer is required to solve some engineering problem involving fluid flow, using standard and general-purpose computer programs available in many organizations.
