Publicity about supersonic transports (the SSTs) and spray cans, their possible dele terious effects on the stratospheric ozone layer, and the possible resultant consequences of enhanced solar ultraviolet radiation on man and his envi ronment have helped to focus attention on both the beneficial and the detri mental effects of light. In addition, considerable activity is currently being directed toward harnessing solar energy as one solution to the world energy crisis. Some mechanisms for accomplishing this involve photobiological systems or photochemical models based on these systems. It would thus seem that modern man has rediscovered the sun and is now actively considering new uses of light rather than thinking of light only as an aid to vision. Photobiology has become a major new scientific field. Bailey's famous textbook has been completely revised and a second edition of Bernardini's work has been produced. The present text is an attempt to provide some insight into the current state of the art. Chapter 1 discusses the physical properties of oils and fats with special reference to those properties which can be monitored to give an in dication of the suitability of fats for chocolate production. The physical properties of the fats are often determined by the order in which the fatty acids are attached to the glyceride molecule. Ram Bhati, in the last article he wrote before his death, showed how mass spectrometry and chemical methods could be used to determine the sequence of fatty acids. Ram's essentially practical approach to the problem is exemplified by the section dealing with the experimental details of the techniques. Neuware -Considerable progress has been made in the past 20 years toward understanding the basic mechanisms of corrosion, and the application of this knowledge to its control. From the very beginning, educational institutions and industrial research laboratories have contributed greatly toward determining and elucidating the fundamental principles of corrosion reactions. Some of the basic principles involved in cor rosion of metals can be credited to early investigators. Michael Faraday in 1830-1840 studied the relationship between the quantity of a metal dissolved and the electric current which was produced by this reaction. He also proposed that the passivation of iron was through the formation of a film and that the dissolution of a metal was electro chemical in nature. Sir Humphrey Davy in 1824 worked out the funda mentals of galvanic corrosion of ships' hulls and applied sacrificial zinc anodes to protect them from sea water corrosion. Richard Arlie in 1847 demonstrated that corrosion produced by oxygen at the surface of iron in a flowing stream generated a current. With the fundamental knowledge available to him from these early investigators, Willis Rodney Whitney developed and expressed, in its most useful form, one of the basic scientific principles which provides modern corrosion specialists with a fundamental basis of corrosion control. The first part of Chapter I gives the reader the necessary definitions and basic concepts. The fundamental method of direct summation is explained and illustrated. The second part of Chapter I deals with the methods developed by Rainville. These methods are based principally on inventive manipulation of power series. Weisner's group-theoretic method is explained in detail in Chapter II and is further illustrated in Chapter III. When this method is applicable, it yields a set of at least three generating functions. In Chapter II for the Laguerre polynomials six generating functions were found. Truesdell's method is studied in Chapter IV. For a given set of functions {fez, an the success of this method depends on the existence of certain transformations. If fez, a) can be transformed into F(z, a) such that a a-; F(z, a)=F(z, a+ 1), or if fez, a) can be transformed into G(z, a) such that a a-; G(z, a)=G(z, a-I), then from each transformed function a generating function can be obtained. Truesdell's method for obtaining the transformed functions does not require any ingenuity on the user's part. Truesdell has shown how these simple results may be exploited to generate more complicated results by means of specified, systematic, and general processes. Neuware -I have revised Moy-Thomas's widely used book on Palaeozoic fishes in an attempt to incorporate some of the considerable advances that have been made in this field over the last 30 years, which have in some respects made the first edition seriously out-of-date. The book is now inevitably longer, but its scope remains the same and the original approach has been main tained as far as possible. I have, however, undertaken a certain amount ofre arrangement of the contents, consonant with our changing views of fish evolution, and have tried to reflect some of the current preoccupations of students of fish evolution in expanded sections on mode of life and relation ships. The illustrations have been completely replaced, and in selecting the figures I have been faced with an embarrassing richness of source material. In an attempt to keep the figures down to a reasonable number, I have decided that it is better to have a few species illustrated with clear drawings than give thumb-nail sketches of all the forms mentioned in the text, and as far as possible to restrict the illustrations to Palaeozoic species. All the illustrations have been redrawn to a common style, and in some cases they have been specially prepared or modified for this book.
