This is most particularly true of low- and intermediate mass stars during t…he second ascent of the giant branch. Such stars bring to their surfaces products of nucleosynthesis currently taking place in their deep interiors, they pulsate as Mira variables, develop extended outward-flowing atmospheres that may exhibit maser properties, and shed great quantities of matter, sometimes highly processed, into the inter stellar medium. The manner in which processed matter is brought to the surface is far from being completely explained, and the precise mechanism or mechanisms whereby matter is ejected from the stellar surface (whether by deposition of Alfven waves, radiation pressure on grains, or as a consequence of so me large scale envelope instability) has yet to be elucidated to every one's satisfaction. The purpose of the second workshop in Astrophysics, organized by the 'Advanced School of Astronomy', was to bring together experts on all the physical processes occurring in red giants in an effort to emphasize the interrelatedness of these individual processes, and to encourage a dia logue among experts that might serve to initiate a synthesis, or at least sharpen our understanding of the most important problems to address in the future.

Some bruchid species have been able to colonize habitats differing totally; some differing in their latitude, and thus their basic periodicities; others differing in their degree of complexity (stocks of seeds): What are the respective roles played by polymorphism and plasticity in that exceptional capacity What differences are there between the populations living on wild plants in dispersal areas and those living in stocks What are the alterations brought about by the drastic selection pressures in populations having later colonized habitats ecologically similar to the original habitats What factors determine the degree of specificity of trophic relationships, and the possibilities of extension of the niche What influences are exerted by the other elements of the original bio cenoses upon the behavioural evolution of these species Such are a few fundamental problems that can be tackled directly through.

Although similar type of conferences were held in Europe and recently in the States, this is the first time we have had in Japan for such an international meeting, which may be regarded as an extended version of our national Workshop held twice at the Institute of Plasma Physics of Japan (IPPJ) in 1976 and in 1977 (IPPJ Research Report No. 286 and No. 365). The Workshop consisted of seven regular sessions and one special session with approximately ninety participants from allover the world. Thirty-six papers, invited and contributed, were presented, nine from U. S. A., three from U. S. S. R., two of each from Germany, France, India, one of each from Sweden, Canada, Belgium and fifteen from Japan. The decision rules with a finite number of elements in the action space are the so-called multiple decision procedures. Several approaches to pr…oblems of multi ple decisions have been developed; in particular, the last decade has witnessed a phenomenal growth of this field. An important aspect of the recent contributions is the attempt by several authors to formalize these problems more in the framework of general decision theory. In this work, we have applied general decision theory to develop some modified principles which are reasonable for problems in this field. Our comments and contributions have been written in a positive spirt and, hopefully, these will an impact on the future direction of research in this field. Using the various viewpoints and frameworks, we have emphasized recent developments in the theory of selection and ranking ~Ihich, in our opinion, provides one of the main tools in this field. The growth of the theory of selection and ranking has kept apace with great vigor as is evidenced by the publication of two recent books, one by Gibbons, Olkin and Sobel (1977), and the other by Gupta and Panchapakesan (1979). The presented theory was inSpired by q- ueing problems. However it seems to be of interest in other branches of applied probability, as for ex…ample reliability or dam theory. Using developed tools, we work out known, aswell as new results from queueing or dam theory. Particularly queues which cannot be treated by standard techniques serve as illustrations of the theory. In Chapter 1 the preliminaries are given. We acquaint the reader with the main ideas of these notes, introduce some useful notations, concepts and abbreviations. He also recall basic facts from ergodic theory, an important mathematical tool employed in these notes. Finally some basic notions from queues are reviewed. Chapter 2 deals with discrete time theory. It serves two purposes. The first one is to let the reader get acquainted with the main lines of the theory needed in continuous time without being bothered by tech nical details. However the discrete time theory also seems to be of interest itself. There are examples which have no counte~ in continuous time. Chapter 3 deals with continuous time theory. It also contains many basic results from queueing or dam theory. Three applications of the continuous time theory are given in Chapter 4. For several decades most workers in the cosmic ray field were interested in the Nuclear Physical aspec…t of the particle beam and many important dis coveries were made, notably the identification of the positron, the muon, the pion and the strange particles. More recently however, em phasis has changed to the Astrophysical aspect both with re8ard to the origin of the radiation and to its relation with the other radiation fields. Mindful of the increasing importance of the Astrophysical facets of the subject the Cosmic Ray Commission of IUPAP approached the High Energy Astrophysics Commission of the IAU with the suggestion of a joint Symposium on Cosmic Ray Origin. The plan was to bring together workers in all the various astronomical fields - from Radio, through Optical to Gamma Rays - with Cosmic Ray physicists and to fully explore the various interrelations. The approach was received with enthusiasm and this book contains the proceedings of the ensuing Symposium, (styled IUPAP/ IAU Symposium No. 94) which was held in Bologna from 11th - 14th June 1980. Virtually all the papers presented are reproduced here. The Scientific Organizing Committee chose the invited speakers whose papers formed the major scientific component of the meeting. Additional short contributed papers were also called for and very brief 2-page resumes (which have not been refereed) are given in the proceedings. 428 pp. Englisch.

It is intended to introduce readers to the very wide range of applicability of linear programming, covering… problems of manage ment, administration, transportation and a number of other uses which are mentioned in their context. The emphasis is on numerical algorithms, which are illustrated by examples of such modest size that the solutions can be obtained using pen and paper. It is clear that these methods, if applied to larger problems, can also be carried out on automatic (electronic) computers. Commercially available computer packages are, in fact, mainly based on algorithms explained in this book. The author is convinced that the user of these algorithms ought to be knowledgeable about the underlying theory. Therefore this volume is not merely addressed to the practitioner, but also to the mathematician who is interested in relatively new developments in algebraic theory and in some combinatorial theory as well. The chapters on duality, and on flow in networks, are particularly directed towards this aim and they contain theorems which might not be directly relevant to methods of computation. The application of the concept of duality to the theory of games is of historical interest.
