The intention is to replicate the main processes influencing a system's behaviour and, thereby, assist its manage ment through a capability to estimate future change. Over the last few decades, one of the major institutional initiatives for promoting such research has been provided by specialised Study Groups and Commissions established by the International Geographical Union (IGU). These scholarly networks have aimed to co-ordinate international research agendas for geographical systems model ling and their activities have been recorded in both edited volumes (Fischer and Getis, 1997) and special issues of learned journals (Wilkinson and Boots, 2000; Leung and Okabe, 2001). Presently, this facilitative task is the charge of the Commission on Modelling Geographical Systems (CMGS) appointedat the IGU Hague Congress in 1996 and chaired by Barry Boots (1996-2000) and Richard Thomas (2000-present). Set against this background, this book provides a perspective on the work of the CMGS from 1996 until the IGU Seoul Congress in August 2000 through a collection of papers first presented to our sessions at this event. Phytohormones are one of the key systems integrating metabolic and developmental events in the whole plant and the response of plants to external factors. Thus, they influence the yield and quality of crops. During the last decade we have slowly begun to understand the molecular mechanisms underlying phytohormone action, largely as a result of the rapid developments that have been made internationally in the field of plant molecular genetics. Putative receptor proteins for ethylene (1993- 95), brassinosteroids (1997) and cytokinins (2001) have been identified and the genes that encode them cloned. Primary response genes and elements of hormonal signal transduction have also been identified for most known phytohormones. There is now little doubt that phytohormones, like their animal counterparts, function as signal molecules and create a signalling network in the whole plant organism. The in vivo activity of hormones depends, among other things, on their rate of biosynthesis and metabolism, and on their transport into and out of target cells. Consequently, genes and enzymes involved in these processes are of particular interest. In recent years a number of genes encoding enzymes for the synthesis, modification and degradation of different phytohormones have been cloned and identified, as have genes encoding proteins involved in phytohormone transport and its regulation. Some classes of phytohormone have been shown to participate in stress reactions and can increase the resistance of plants to unfavorable environmental factors.…

For example, the study of fingerprints came from forensics and pattern recognition, speaker recognition evolved from signal processing, the beginnings of face recognition were in computer vision, and privacy concerns arose from the public policy arena. One of the challenges of any new field is to state what the core ideas are that define the field in order to provide a research agenda for the field and identify key research problems. Biometrics has been grappling with this challenge since the late 1990s. With the matu ration of biometrics, the separate biometrics areas are coalescing into the new discipline of biometrics. Arno would pick an arbitrary starting point somewhere around the table, and the designated person would head to the front of the table to give a short talk on 'something new' in his or her research area. These events have become a reference for Latin- American research and development groups, institutions and final users. Additionally, this conference hosted the 1st Galecia Workshop, organized by the Group for Advanced Learning Environments using Communication and Information Aids, a European Union MINERVA/SOCRATES thematic network on Computers & Education. This joint conference brought together international groups of researchers and practitioners to share experiences, making it possible to establish international relations to enable future collaborations in future initiatives at all levels. 130 papers were accepted for presentation from more than 300 submitted. Computers and Education. Towards a Lifelong Learning Society includes 23 re-revised papers selected among the presented papers. The selection was made according to the initial ranking provided by the reviewers, and an additional on-conference ranking process provided by session chairs. Out of the recognized hormones, attention has largely been focused on five (Auxins, Gibberellins, Cytokinin, Abscisic acid and Ethylene). However, in this book, the information about the most recent group of phytohormones (Brassinosteroids) has been compiled by us. It is a class of over 40 polyhydroxylated sterol derivatives, ubiquitously distributed throughout the plant kingdom. A large portion of these steroids is restricted to the reproductive organs (pollens and immature seeds). Moreover, their strong growth-inducing capacity, recognized as early as prior to their identification in 1979, tempted the scientists to visualize the practical importance of this group of phytohormones. The brassin solution, from rape pollen, was used in a collaborative project by the scientists of Brazil and U. S. A. in a p- sowing seed treatment to augment the yield. This was followed by large-scale scientific programmes in U. S. , Japan, China, Germany and erstwhile U. S. S. R. , after the isolation of the brassinosteroids. This approach suits best in today's context where plants are targeted only as producers and hormones are employed to get desired results. Chapter 1 of this book (which embodies a total of 10 chapters), gives a comprehensive survey of the hitherto known brassinosteroids, isolated from lower and higher plants.…

An entire chapter is devoted to one of the numeric simulation techniques being used in optoelectronic design (the Beam Propagation Method), and provides opportunity for students to explore some novel optical structures without too much effort.
