These diseases traditionally have been grouped together under the general term of cancer, without any scientific reason and irrespective of many differences existing between them. The word cancer, because it is synonymous with diseases that cause suffering and death, naturally generates fear in people throughout the world. Cancer fortunately has a changing face caused by the realization that these diseases are different diseases with variable etiology and prognosis; they need different kinds of treatment, and even prevention is a practical proposition. The time has therefore come to delete the term cancer from our terminol ogy as unscientific and unhelpful and to substitute oncological diseases governed by the system of knowledge designated oncology. This conforms also with the designations used for other groups of diseases. In the divisions of oncology an important place is held by surgical oncology because many oncological diseases require surgical treatment alone, or in combination with radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Combina tion therapy is being used effectively for an increasing number of these diseases, and this trend will become more pronounced as chemotherapy develops. The following treatise is an attempt by the authors to pre sent a complete picture of the many aspects of interferon. Having recently had the privilege of visiting the laboratories of the au thors and several others of our Soviet colleagues working in the interferon field, I was most impressed with the amount of research being done in this area. Since a great deal of this work is published in the Russian language, there is unfortunately a time lag until it can be received and translated. We are therefore most grateful to Drs. Solov'ev and Bektemirov for having produced this impres sive work which offers the opportunity to review the entire field and, very importantly, some of the work being done by our Soviet counterparts, and also to Plenum Publishing Corporation for pro viding the English translation. The authors noted that such a high value of the phosphorylation coefficient suggests a fundamental difference in the mechanisms of A TP formation coupled with respiration, and glycolysis, since in the latter case, the amount of the ATP synthesized is equal to that of the substrate utilized. A lot of hypothetical schemes were put forward to explain the nature of coupling between electron transfer and phosphorylation, but none of them solved the problem. Only quite recently, one hypo thetical scheme of energy coupling, viz. Mitchell's chemiosmotic concept, 2.3 was supported by experimental data which allow us to prefer it to alternative possibilities. The discovery of the virus two decades ago resulted from clinical and basic science collaborative studies on Burkitt lymphoma. Subse quently, nasopharyngeal carcinoma and infectious mononucleosis have been linked etiologically with the virus. During the first decade of research following the discovery of the virus, the mechanisms for the induction of BL, NPC, and IM were sought. At that time one prevailing view was that individual oncogenic strains of EBV were responsible for the different disorders. Paralleling the development of immunology in the 1970's was the accrual of knowledge about immunological events occurring during IM. These studies suggest that immune defense mechanisms deter mine the outcome of this viral infection rather than different viral strains. During the early 1970's, Starzl and Penn and Gatti and Good had noted an increased frequency of malignancy in renal allograft recipients and children with primary immune deficiency disorders, respectively. These observations provoked investigators to restudy the role of immune surveillance against malignancy. The aim of these lectures was to highlight some of the current progress in our understanding of the degenerate electron 'liquid' in an external field which is neither uniform nor periodic. This theme brought together such topics as the electronic structure at metallic surfaces and in random metallic alloys, liquid metals and metallic glasses. As is the case in connection with infinite order ed crystals, the central issues to be discussed were the nature of the electronic spectra, the stability of the various phases and the occurrence of such phenomena as magnetism and supercon ductivity. There is emerging, however, an organizing concept. A short look into the future indicates that educational system design will be dominated by a concept which, for want of a better term, we may call an 'information system.' Actually, this term de rives from an early New York World's Fair exhibition designed by Charles Eames entitled the 'Informational Machine,' in which the designer illustrated once again his insight into the future by showing how in a fundamental manner the digital computer promised to affect and to change our lives; and this change is by no means completed. The findings are based on data from more than five thousand Americans and include results from four separate representative samplings of the American population. Pain research by itself is not new. Yet, approaches to the study and control of pain are new. This book is based upon a symposium-workshop on the study and control of pain that took place at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advance ment of Science, January, 1975. It was destgned to deal with a number of theoretical and clinical issues. We at tempted to assess previous years of research, how conceptions of pain phenomena have changed and what are some of the gaps in our knowledge. However, work prior to about the year 1940 is now mainly of historical interest, since ex periments were often carried out under experimental conditions and with methods of analysis leading to uncertainties in inter preting the measured diffusion coefficients. Data on diffusion rates are of importance in processes which are controlled by rates of atomic migration such as growth of phases and homogenization of alloys. In addition diffusion plays an important part in theories of such phenomena as oxidation, plastic deformation, sintering, and creep. A tremendous advance in diffusion studies was made possible by the availability of radioactive isotopes of sufficiently high spe cific activity after the second world war. Measurements of self diffusion rates then became possible using radioactive isotopes having the same chemical properties as the solvent material, and it also became possible to study tracer impurity diffusion when the concentration of the impurity is so small as not to alter the chemi cal homogeneity of the system. Human remains unearthed in Lancashire, England, dating from ap proximately 900 AD, show clear evidence of the aftliction. However, it was not until the 1800s that physicians rediscovered the condition, and a little more than 100 years ago that Sir James Paget published a perceptive and accurate description of the disease from the clinical and pathologic points of view. He felt the disease represented an inflammatory condition of the skeleton and hence named it osteitis deformans. The condition again lapsed into anonymity for several decades afterwards, and therapeutic approaches did not evolve until after World War II when several groups, located mainly in the Boston area, began using a variety of agents, includ ing corticosteroids for treatment of this condition. These early attempts at therapy were unsuccessful and the condition remained essentially untreat able until the development of the calcitonins and the bisphosphonates in the 1970s. In 1978, the Paget's Disease Foundation, a private nonprofit volun tary health agency, was founded to assist individuals aftlicted by Paget's disease of bone, to provide education regarding this condition to the medical community, and to encourage research efforts to better under stand and treat the condition. Their commonality, which coalesced intense interest in the theoretical and exper imental solid state physics/chemistry communities, was based on the obser vation that these inorganic and organic polymeric substrates exhibit striking metal-like elec,trical and optical properties. Exploitation and extension of these systems has led to the systematic study of both the chemistry and physics of highly and poorly conducting linear chain substances. To gain a salient understanding of these complex materials rich in anomalous aniso tropic electrical, optical, magnetic, and mechanical properties, the conver gence of diverse skills and talents was required. The constructive blending of traditionally segregated disciplines such as synthetic and physical organic, inorganic, and polymer chemistry, crystallography, and theoretical and ex perimental solid state physics has led to the timely development of a truly interdisciplinary science. It is equally a privilege to contribute these few introductory words to the Volume recording these symposia and I believe that it would not be inappropriate to recall with minor mod ifications some of the thoughts that occurred to me when I opened the symposium in 1976, for they do reflect the spirit of determined optimism, but without complacency, that characterized the contributions on both of these two occasions. In common with many others I always looked forward, from year to year, to the Meetings and admired each time the spirit which was so apparent and so very much in tune with the general philosophy of a surgeon, the spirit which admits that to a doctor and all others who care for patients cancer is a grim and terrible foe but suggests that, rather than sitting down and grizzling about it, we should bestir ourselves, do our best, whatever the difficulties, and at least try to do a little better each year. An understanding of the neural basis of hearing is thus a starting point for elucidating the mechanisms that are essential to human communication. The cochlear nucleus is the first region of the brain to receive input from the inner ear and is therefore the earliest stage in the central nervous system at which auditory signals are processed for distribution to higher centers. Clarifying its role in the central auditory pathway is crucial to our knowledge of how the brain deals with complex stimuli such as speech, and is also essential for understanding the central effects of peripheral sensorineural hearing loss caused by, for example, aging, ototoxic drugs, and noise. With the death of G. W. Harris in late 1971, and the loss thereby of an outstanding pioneer and personality in neuroendocri nology, it appeared to us to be even more urgent to undertake such a ven ture and collect as many stories as possible. The three of us agreed that initially we would limit our invitations to the senior investigators whose re search careers lay mostly behind them, with the hope that if this venture proved successful, we could ask younger and still very active researchers in neuroendocrinology to contribute to a subsequent volume. Most of those invited to write for this book agreed to do so, but regrettably there remain some notable absentees. Quasielastic light scattering (also called self-beating spectroscopy or intensity correlation spectroscopy) is the technique, introduced by Benedek and coworkers and by Cummins and coworkers about 15 years ago, by which dynamical information about a scattering medium is obtained through the measurement of the power spectrum (or the intensity correlation function) of the laser light scattered from the medium. The technique received in the early seventies a considerable impulse from the development of real-time fast digital correlators. The aim of the Workshop was to bring together a selected number of researchers in order to discuss recent developments in quasielastic light scattering and related optical methods and to report about new applications of the technique in physics, chemistry and biology. The first two days of the meeting were devoted to the oral presentations of papers.
