Its principal objective has been to innitiate and nurture collaborative research networks of scientists interested in the IDultidisciplinary aspects of many-body theory applied to problems in con densed-matter physics. Financial as well as moral support is gratefully appreciated by all: of the CLAF in Rio, the CNPq in Brasilia, the FAPESP and the FUNDUNESP in Sao Paulo, and the U.S. Army Research Office in Durham, NC, USA.

An exposition is given of ordinary, generalized, two- and three-stage estimates for regression analysis, the method of principal components being a…pplied for factor analysis. When establishing an econometric model, the two ways of analysis complement each other. The model was realized as part of the 'Interplay' research project concerning the economies of the European Common Market countries at the Econometrics Department of the Tilburg School of Economics. The Interplay project aims at: a. elaborating more or less uniformly defined and estimated models; b. clarifying the economic structure and the economic policy possible with the linked models of the European Community countries. Besides the model for the Netherlands published here, the models for Belgium, Italy, West Germany and the United Kingdom are ready for linking and for publishing later on. The econometric model presented in this book and upon which the Interplay model is based comprises eleven structural and twenty-one definitional equations; it is estimated with ordinary, two- and three-stage least squares. The analysis of the model is directed at eliminating multicollinearity, accor ding to D.E. Farrar's and R. Glauber's method. In practice, however, complete elimination of multicollinearity leads to an exclusion of certain relations which is not entirely satisfactory. Economic relations can be dealt with more fully by analyzing the variables involved in detail by factor analysis. Among the phenomena discussed were superconductivity, magnetic ordering, the metal-insulator transition, localization, the fractional Quantum Hall effect (QHE), Peierls and spin-Peierls transitions, conductance fluctuations and sliding charge-density (CDW) and spin-density (SDW) waves. That these effects appear most pronounced in systems of reduced dimensionality was amply demonstrated at the meeting. Indeed, when concrete illustrations were presented, they typically involved chain-like materials such as conjugated polymers, inorganic CDW systems and organie conductors, or layered materials such as high-temperature copper-oxide superconductors, certain of the organic superconductors, and the QHE samples, or devices where the electrons are confined to a restricted region of sample, e. g. , the depletion layer of a MOSFET. To enable this broad subject to be covered in thirty-five lectures (and ab out half as many posters), the workshop was deliberately focused on theoretical models for these phenomena and on methods for describing as faithfully as possible the 'true' behav ior of these models. This latter emphasis was especially important, since the inherently many-body nature of problems involving interacting electrons renders conventional effec tive single-particle/mean-field methods (e. g. , Hartree-Fock or the local-density approxi mation in density-functional theory) highly suspect. The papers of this volume are dedicated by friends, students, and admirers to the memory of this outstanding scholar and teacher. To mention but one side of… his original and varied scientific work, the results and effects of which cannot be dis cussed here, Edmund Landau performed one of his greatest services in developing the analytic theory of prime numbers from a subject accessible only with great difficulty even to the initiated few to the general estate of mathematicians. With the exception of the work of Chebyshev, Riemann, and Mertens, before Landau the problems of this theory were attempted only in a number of papers which were filled with gaps and errors. These problems were such that even Gauss abandoned them after several attempts in his youth, and they were described by N. H. Abel in a letter of 1823 and by O. Toeplitz in a lecture in 1930 as the deepest part of mathe matics. Clarification first began with the papers of Hadamard, de la Vallee Poussin, and von Mangoldt. At the end ofthe foreword to his work' Handbuch der Lehre von der Verteilung der Primzahlen' which appeared in 1909, Landau could thus remark with complete justification: ' . . . The postulational basis of the subject will be radically revised in order…to construct a broad-scale and conceptually unified treatment. The familiar figures of classical geometry-points, segments, lines, planes, triangles, circles, and so on-stem from problems in the physical world and seem to be conceptually unrelated. However, a natural setting for their study is provided by the concept of convex set, which is compara tively new in the history of geometrical ideas. The familiarfigures can then appear as convex sets, boundaries of convex sets, or finite unions of convex sets. Moreover, two basic types of figure in linear geometry are special cases of convex set: linear space (point, line, and plane) and halfspace (ray, halfplane, and halfspace). Therefore we choose convex set to be the central type of figure in our treatment of geometry. How can the wealth of geometric knowledge be organized around this idea By defini tion, a set is convex if it contains the segment joining each pair of its points; that is, if it is closed under the operation of joining two points to form a segment. Our justification is based upon our effort to concentrate the symposium upon a single area in which he has had an extended involvement: namely, the metamorphic molt in flies. In so doing, we immediately recognized the enormous humoral and physiological ramifications, both direct and indirect, of such an interest. Our selection of these papers is an attempt to present the broad picture with a few quick strokes. The first offering, by J. H. Willis, et al., is a direct outgrowth of Fraenkel's work with Rudall on the chemistry of the puparium. Their investigations on the structure of fly cuticle and its changes at pupariation (Fraenkel and Rudall, 1940, Proc. Roy. Soc. London (~) 129:1; 1947, ibid, 134:111), provided quanti tative data which have,since that time, influenced our ideas con cerning cuticular changes at metamorphosis and are presently at the center of the controversy over the mechanism of cuticular hardening and darkening (see Hillerton and Vincent, 1979, l. Wolf, Kopf and Gerrity have enjoyed substantial interaction with clinicians in Departments of Obstetrics and Gynecology and have been directly involved with successful IVF programs. Both Wolf and Kopf have served as research scientists in the Division of Reproductive Biology at the University of Pennsylvania, which, for more than 22 years, has fostered co-mingling of clinically oriented and basic science faculty. It is through such interaction, which clearly exists at many institutions including the University of Wisconsin, that the process of technology transfer is best served. The first radiopharmaceutical selected for stu…dy was 67-Gallium (67-Ga) administered as the citrate. The object of the study was to de termine the usefulness of 67-Ga in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with various malignancies. Funding for the project was granted by the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission and the National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health (NIH). The Nuclear Medicine Department of the Clinical Center, NIH, agreed to assist ORAU with aspects of this study, particularly with 67-Ga scin tigraphy of patients with lymphoma and Hodgkin's disease. Pre liminary reports from the ORAU study are in press. Since April 1971, 67-Ga scintigraphy has gained increasing use in the study of cancer patients at the Clinical Center, NIH, where well over 1000 such patients have been examined by this method. This monograph was written to present selected examples from this group of a variety of malignancies seen in this 28-month period. No attempt has been made to correlate this overall experience statistically. Rather, this presentation is to help familiarize the practitioner of Nuclear Medicine with the wide range of usefulness for 67-Ga scintigraphy while making him aware of the variation in scan appearance and watchful of the many pitfalls of 67-Ga scan interpretation. At that time Robert Wagner suggested that I investigate compiler optimi zation of data organization, suitable for use in a parallel or vector machine environment. We developed a sch…eme in which the compiler, having knowledge of the machine's access patterns, does a global analysis of a program's operations, and automatically determines optimum organization for the data. For example, for certain architectures and certain operations, large improvements in performance can be attained by storing a matrix in row major order. However a subsequent operation may require the matrix in column major order. A determination must be made whether or not it is the best solution globally to store the matrix in row order, column order, or even have two copies of it, each organized differently. We have developed two algorithms for making this determination. The technique shows promise in a vector machine environ ment, particularly if memory interleaving is used. Supercomputers such as the Cray, the CDC Cyber 205, the IBM 3090, as well as superminis such as the Convex are possible environments for implementation. 156 pp. Englisch.

The meeting was held un…der the auspices of the Ecosciences Panel of the N.A.T.O. Science Committee, and the organising expenses and greater part of the expenses of the speakers and chairmen were provided by N.A.T.O. The scientific programme was planned by M. W. Holdgate and M. J. Woodman, in consultation with numerous colleagues, and especially with the Administrative Director of the Conference in Iceland, Dr. Sturla Fridriksson. Iceland proved a particularly suitable location for such a Conference. Geologically, it is one of the youngest countries 1n the world, owing its origin to the up-welling of volcanic rock along the spreading zone of the mid-Atlantic ridge within the past 20 million years. Its structure, northern oceanic situation, recent glaciation and continuing volcanic activity make it distinct as a habitat and have given it a flora and fauna of especial interest. It is also a land of great natural beauty with its ice caps, waterfalls, volcanic landforms, geothermal features and dramatic coasts. In addition, its ecosystems have proved except ionally vulnerable to man's impact and it presents the kind of problem with which the Conference was concerned in an acute form. 512 pp. Englisch.

From the ranks of its members, many fundamental discoveries and inventions have been made involving the many aspects of oxygen transport and utilization by biological tissues. The ISOTT proceed ings, now in its 14th edition, has become a standard work in the field as witnessed by the inclusion in the Science Citation Index of all volumes published so far. The 19th ISOTT Meeting was held in Cura~ao from August 24th through August 30th, 1991. The Cura~ao Meeting attracted 145 registrants and 45 accompanying persons. The format originated by Dr. Ian Llngmuir in 1985, consisting of posters ac companied by an abbreviated oral summary, was again successfully handled with slight modifications. The meeting was introduced by 6 review lectures covering the whole field of oxygen transport from bioengineering, the problem of diffusion in lung, blood and tissue through pathology of oxygen uptake in the lung, oxygen supply dependency of the critically ill to artificial oxygen carriers.
