Its principal objective has been to innitiate and nurture collaborative research networks of scientists interested in the IDultidisciplinary aspects of many-body theory applied to problems in con densed-matter physics. Financial as well as moral support is gratefully appreciated by all: of the CLAF in Rio, the CNPq in Brasilia, the FAPESP and the FUNDUNESP in Sao Paulo, and the U.S. Army Research Office in Durham, NC, USA.

An exposition is given of ordinary, generalized, two- and three-stage estimates for regression analysis, the method of principal components being a…pplied for factor analysis. When establishing an econometric model, the two ways of analysis complement each other. The model was realized as part of the 'Interplay' research project concerning the economies of the European Common Market countries at the Econometrics Department of the Tilburg School of Economics. The Interplay project aims at: a. elaborating more or less uniformly defined and estimated models; b. clarifying the economic structure and the economic policy possible with the linked models of the European Community countries. Besides the model for the Netherlands published here, the models for Belgium, Italy, West Germany and the United Kingdom are ready for linking and for publishing later on. The econometric model presented in this book and upon which the Interplay model is based comprises eleven structural and twenty-one definitional equations; it is estimated with ordinary, two- and three-stage least squares. The analysis of the model is directed at eliminating multicollinearity, accor ding to D.E. Farrar's and R. Glauber's method. In practice, however, complete elimination of multicollinearity leads to an exclusion of certain relations which is not entirely satisfactory. Economic relations can be dealt with more fully by analyzing the variables involved in detail by factor analysis. In this study factor analysis is also a suitable method for a comparative analysis of different periods. 252 pp. Englisch.

Among the phenomena discussed were superconductivity, magnetic ordering, the metal-insulator transition, localization, the fractional Quantum Hall effect (QHE), Peierls and spin-Peierls transitions, conductance fluctuations and sliding charge-density (CDW) and spin-density (SDW) waves. That these effects appear most pronounced in systems of reduced dimensionality was amply demonstrated at the meeting. Indeed, when concrete illustrations were presented, they typically involved chain-like materials such as conjugated polymers, inorganic CDW systems and organie conductors, or layered materials such as high-temperature copper-oxide superconductors, certain of the organic superconductors, and the QHE samples, or devices where the electrons are confined to a restricted region of sample, e. g. , the depletion layer of a MOSFET. To enable this broad subject to be covered in thirty-five lectures (and ab out half as many posters), the workshop was deliberately focused on theoretical models for these phenomena and on methods for describing as faithfully as possible the 'true' behav ior of these models. This latter emphasis was especially important, since the inherently many-body nature of problems involving interacting electrons renders conventional effec tive single-particle/mean-field methods (e. g. , Hartree-Fock or the local-density approxi mation in density-functional theory) highly suspect. Again, this is particularly true in reduced dimensions, where strong quantum fluctuations can invalidatemean-field results. 420 pp. Englisch.

The familiar figures of classical geometry-points, segments, lines, planes, triangles, circles, and so on-stem from problems in the physical world and seem to be conceptually unrelated. However, a natural setting for their study is provided by the concept of convex set, which is compara tively new in the history of geometrical ideas. The familiarfigures can then appear as convex sets, boundaries of convex sets, or finite unions of convex sets. Moreover, two basic types of figure in linear geometry are special cases of convex set: linear space (point, line, and plane) and halfspace (ray, halfplane, and halfspace). Therefore we choose convex set to be the central type of figure in our treatment of geometry. How can the wealth of geometric knowledge be organized around this idea By defini tion, a set is convex if it contains the segment joining each pair of its points; that is, if it is closed under the operation of joining two points to form a segment. At that time Robert Wagner suggested that I investigate compiler optimi zation of data organization, suitable for use in a parallel or vector machine environment. We developed a sch…eme in which the compiler, having knowledge of the machine's access patterns, does a global analysis of a program's operations, and automatically determines optimum organization for the data. For example, for certain architectures and certain operations, large improvements in performance can be attained by storing a matrix in row major order. However a subsequent operation may require the matrix in column major order. A determination must be made whether or not it is the best solution globally to store the matrix in row order, column order, or even have two copies of it, each organized differently. We have developed two algorithms for making this determination. The technique shows promise in a vector machine environ ment, particularly if memory interleaving is used. Supercomputers such as the Cray, the CDC Cyber 205, the IBM 3090, as well as superminis such as the Convex are possible environments for implementation. 156 pp. Englisch.

From the ranks of its members, many fundamental discoveries and inventions have been made involving the many aspects of oxygen transport and utilization by biological tissues. The ISOTT proceed ings, now in its 14th edition, has become a standard work in the field as witnessed by the inclusion in the Science Citation Index of all volumes published so far. The 19th ISOTT Meeting was held in Cura~ao from August 24th through August 30th, 1991. The Cura~ao Meeting attracted 145 registrants and 45 accompanying persons. The format originated by Dr. Ian Llngmuir in 1985, consisting of posters ac companied by an abbreviated oral summary, was again successfully handled with slight modifications. The meeting was introduced by 6 review lectures covering the whole field of oxygen transport from bioengineering, the problem of diffusion in lung, blood and tissue through pathology of oxygen uptake in the lung, oxygen supply dependency of the critically ill to artificial oxygen carriers. This has detoured our attention from the great enigmas posed by the dynamics and collective behavior of…strongly interacting particles. Discovered more than 30 years ago, the thermal nature of the hadronic particle spectra has stimulated considerable theoretical effort, which so far has failed to 'confirm' on the basis of microscopic interactions the origins of this phenomenon. However, a highly successful Statistical Bootstrap Model was developed by Rolf Hagedorn at CERN about 30 years ago, which has led us to consider the 'boiling hadronic matter' as a transient state in the trans formation of hadronic particles into their melted form which we call Quark-GIuon-Plasma (QGP). Today, we return to seek detailed understanding of the thermalization processes of hadronic matter, equipped on the theoretical side with the knowledge of the fundamental strong interaction theory, the quantum chromo-dynamics (QCD), and recognizing the im portant role of the complex QCD-vacuum structure. On the other side, we have developed new experimental tools in the form of nuclear relativistic beams, which allow to create rather extended regions in space-time of Hot Hadronic Matter. The confluence of these new and recent developments in theory and experiment led us to gather together from June 27 to July 1, 1994, at the Grand Hotel in Divonne-Ies-Bains, France, to discuss and expose the open questions and issues in our field. 576 pp. Englisch.

The initial conception for a light scattering seminar of about fifty scientists - half from each…side, including theorists and experimenters 'well versed in theory' - arose from discussions between Professor J. L. Birman and Professor K. K. Rebane at the 1971 Paris International Conference on Light Scattering in Solids. This conception won approval among the active scientists on both sides. After considerable planning and some delays, it received both material support and encouragement from the appro priate organizations on each side: in the USA: The National Science Foundation (Division of International Programs), and the National Academy of Sciences; in the USSR: the Academy of Sciences USSR. A variety of reasons contributed to the positive response on both sides: for example, the considerable and high level of theoretical and experimental scientific activity on both sides in laser-related light scattering, optics, and generally - electro dynamics of condensed media - some along rather similiar lines; the impediments to free and easy communication and travel be tween USA and USSR scientists working on related problems; plus the desire to improve both contacts, and the free flow of informa tion and individuals, to the mutual advantage of both sides. 568 pp. Englisch.
