Deeply impressed by the report of the Symposium on Geographic Pathology and Demography of Cancer held at Oxford in 1950, and through his preliminary work on cancer mortality statistics in Japan, Professor M. Segi decided to devote his life to the fight against cancer by establishing worldwide comparative cancer statistics-one of the landmarks in cancer studies and in cancer prevention strategies. He and his associates published six volumes of Cancer Mortality in 24 Countries with reliable mortality statistics covering 1950-1967, using the world population which he had derived as a standard. These publications rapidly became standard works of reference on the subject throughout the world. Professor Segi was a pioneer of cancer epidemiology in Japan. He cleaved a path through the jungle of cancer using epidemiological methods. By promoting cancer studies, he overcame the poor understanding of malignant disease which existed after World War II, when cancer mortality rates were still low.

' The sym posium participants were asked to explore theological, ritual, and sym bolic aspects-both positive and negative-of the feminine cultural do main, using ethnographic materials with which they were familiar. The resulting papers have been revised, edited, and gathered together in Women in Ritual and Symbolic Roles. The theoretical importance of these papers for the study of women's participation in culture and society rests on the assumption that reli gious ideas are paramount forces in social life, that relationships be tween the sexes, the nature of female sexuality, and the social and cul tural roles of women are in large part defined by religious ideas. That this proposition remains valid long after religion itself has ceased to be a living truth in the lives of many people can be seen from the tenacious ness of Judeo-Christian ideas about women in the contemporary West ern world. Both the expansion of life options for women and the creation of more positive cultural images of the female are intimately related to changes in the my tho-symbolic portraits that people carry around in their heads. It is essential to consider the circuits and the display device together in order to obtain a clear picture of the economics of the different techniques. In general, a display module is controlled by binary input signals at normal logic pow ers and may be subdivided into five basic elements: 1) data memory, 2) character generator, 3) driving circuits, 4) scanning circuits, and 5) display device. The data memory is essential to make the display module independent of the system. Normally, this will be an electronic memory, but in some cases, the display device will have an inherent memory. This symposium was the continuation of the series of symposia ini…tiated in 1976 in Albany, New York under the title 'Micellization, Solubilization and Microemulsions'. The next two symposia were labelled 'Solution Chemistry of Surfactants' and 'Solution Behavior of Surfactants: Theoretical and Applied Aspects' held in Knoxville, TN in 1978 and Potsdam, N. Y. in 1980, respectively. In 1982 at the time of the 4th Symposium in this series, it became amply evident that there was a definite need to have more a generic title to describe these biennial events, and after much deliberation it was decided that an appropriate title would be 'Surfactants in Solution' as both the aggregation and adsorption aspects of surfactants were addressed. So the 4th Symposium was held in 1982 in Lund, Sweden, under this new rubric, and it was decided to continue these symposia in the future under this appellation. Naturally, the Bordeaux Symposium was dubbed as the 5th International Symposium on Surfactants in Solution, and our logo became SIS which is very apropos and appealing. It follows that the cosine seminvariants themselves are uniquely determined, in general, by the observed magnitudes of the normalized structure factors. The values of the cosine seminvariants in turn lead unambiguously to the values of the individual phases and thus to the crystal structure by means of the E-map (Fourier synthesis). This year the Symposium 'Kinin 1975' was held on the 15th - 17th of July. Par…ticipation at the Symposium drew attention to the fact that 1975 was a particularly difficult year due to the delicate international economic situation as well as the time restrictions for organizing the Symposium as a satellite conference to the Sixth International Congress of Pharmacology held in Helsinki, Finland. Despite these difficulties, the 'Kinin 175' Symposium was an unquestioned success, due, in great part, to the more than 40 contributors who presented their most current studies at the customary high scientific standard, presentations that provoked and stimulated considerable discussion and debate. While our family tree now includes new and active members, the presence of many members of our 'Kinin' society unable to attend was missed. In particular, we mourne the death of Professor E. Werle, one of the most outstanding pioneers in the field of the kallikrein-kinin system. His friendship, participation and counsel was, and will continue to be, sorely missed by his many colleagues and students who are indebted to him for his voluminous and scientifically expert contributions continued until the very end of his most full and productive life. As in the past, the atmosphere of friendship and relaxation of the Symposium enhanced the very useful communication and exchange of ideas and information amongst the participants. 416 pp. Englisch.

New ideas in behavioral science are often difficult to track down and evaluate, and consequently there may be a large gap between therapeu tic claims and evidence bearing on those claims. The mother who won ders whether her child should be treated with a special diet is unlikely to have the facts necessary to make a judgment of the costs and benefits. A plethora of recent developments in the molecular biology of DNA are leading to new ideas concerning how DNA alterations might be involved in the mechanism of radiation carcinogenesis. Evidence is accumulating that genetic sequences, known as oncogenes, are involved in the translation of DNA molecular alterations into phenotypic changes associated with malignant cells. For example, a chromosome break often occurs at or near the loca tion of a specific oncogene in Burkitt's lymphoma. Such breaks could represent initial lesions in a translocation process that activates the oncogene by inserting it at a new location, eg., near an active pro moter. Since breakage of the DNA is one of the principal ways that ion izing radiation affects mammalian cells, these new molecular ideas sug gest ways that radiation-induced DNA breaks might be involved as initial events in carcinogenesis. While the possible involvement of oncogenes in radiation carcino genesis is an exciting new development, a direct sequential connection between early molecular changes in DNA and later tumor development has yet to be established. Accordingly, there is a tremendous need for experimental studies of how DNA alterations might convert normal cells to cancer cells. 636 pp. Englisch.

Some of these materials could act as semi-conducters and pos sessed one or two dimensional conductivity. Thus appli cations in electronics could be visualized immediately. Other workers found that reactions used to make simple metal chelates could be used to prepare polymers if the ligands were designed properly. As interest in homo geneous catalysts developed in the late 60's and early 70's, several investigators began binding homogeneous catalysts onto polymers, where the advantage of homo geneous catalysis - known reaction mechanisms and the advantage of heterogeneous catalysis - simplicity and ease of recovery of catalysts could both be obtained. This book is formed by contributions from the Second European Symposium on Lyme Borreliosis, held at St George's Hospital Medical School, London in 1993, which reviewed the current state of knowledge of the condition with regard to clinical manifestations, diagnosis, treatment, ecology, epidemiology, biology and immunopathogenesis. In this book, important data is reviewed concerning the clinical manifestations of Lyme Borreliosis. It seems that strain variation of the spirochaete is the main cause of regional differences seen in the clinical presentation of patients. One striking example of this, is the relatively high incidence of Lyme arthritis in the USA and apparent rarity of this manifestion in some areas of Europe. These important studies open the way for exciting new research that focuses on the immunological and molecular mechanisms that result in disease. A full insight into the ecology of Borrelia burgdorferi is essential to a balanced understanding of the disease and a number of excellent reviews on this subject are included. The New Colloid Sc…ience is based on rigorous, quantitative theory and works with extremely well de fined experimental systems. The former was first made possible by the advent of the Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) theory of the stability of lyophobic colloids in 1948. This is based on a consideration of the electrostatic interactions among colloidal par ticles bearing fixed charges in a medium containing moving counter ions. The Hamiltonian formulation of this model by Weiss, Mock, and Moon herein is a significant development in our theoretical pro gress. During about the same period we have advanced experimentally from poorly defined 'glue-like' systems to monodisperse colloids, synthesized for the first time in 1955 when J. W. Vanderhoff and E. B. Bradford announced their polystyrene colloids with extremely narrow particle size distributions. Vanderhoff and his coworkers have now set another milestone by fully characterizing the surfaces of these systems, as described in this monograph. The revolution is snowballing. Krieger and his coworkers have shown that the opalescent colors exhibited by 'deionized' monodis perse latexes are due to Bragg diffraction of these liquid-crystal systems, that they exhibit reversible 'melting' and that they may serve as macroscopic models for order-disorder phenomena. 200 pp. Englisch.

The extremity of the disease an…d its high mortality have dictated that each means of damaging tumor cells would be rapidly explored and exploited as a mode of therapy, long before the correspond ing theory and technique were completely understood and perfected. Thus radiation was used as an antitumor agent almost immediately following recogni tion of its cytodestructive capability. Equally constant, following the rapid utilization of new therapeutic methods, has been a period of significant technical improvements. This second aspect of the pattern is also illustrated by the field of radiotherapy. New radiation sources, new methods of dosimetry, use of high-energy radiation, and other new techniques allowed the therapist to better focus upon the tumor and to improve the geometry of exposure. Thus, with each technical advance, the 'reach' of radiotherapy was increased and damage to normal tissues was decreased. Inevitably, however, a limit was reached, a point at which clinicians and researchers realized they could go no further without returning to a more fundamental search, one based on the biology of the tumor cell itself. 564 pp. Englisch.

The following ten chapters broadly concern electronic properties associated with semiconductors ranging from narrow to wide energy gap materials. Lattice properties are examined in the remaining chap ters, in which effects governed by phonons in perfect crystals, point defects, their vibrational and electronic spectra, and electron-phonon interactions are stressed. Fun and hard work, both in considerable measure, have gone into the preparation of this volume. At the University of Freiburg, W. Germany, from August 7-20, 1966, the occasion of a NATO Advanced Study Institute on 'The Optical Properties of Solids,' the authors of these various chapters lectured for the Institute; this volume provides essentially the 'Proceed ings' of that meeting. Many major revisions of original lectures (contrac tions and enlargements) were required for better organization and presentation of the subject matter. Several abbreviated chapters appear mainly to indicate the importance of their contents in optical properties research and to indicate recently published books that provide ample coverage. After 1975, 1977, 1979, and 1981, it was the fifth time they joined their efforts for organizing this Summer Insti tute. This school was characterized by simultaneous progress in the theory of elementary particles and by impressive experimental advances. On the theoretical front, one witnessed the new developments in lattice gauge theories, which explore the world of strongly interacting par ticles in a non-perturbative way, and progress in a better understan ding of the unity of all interactions based on supersymmetry. The experimentalists were ~roud to announce the discovery of the interme diate vector bosons; W- and ZO, at C.E.R.N., while physicists working with e+e- colliding beams continued to probe more deeply the validity of the theoretical models of strong, weak and electromagnetic inter actions.
