The primary engine driving this latest transformation of the post-industrial society is generally thought to be technological. But such an explanation is too narrow. Broadly speaking, the age in which we find ourselves could be more aptly described as a global, knowledge-intensive age. Many of today's knowledge-intensive activities, like research and development (R&D) programs, are being conducted with relative ease on a multinational scale. As well as science having an increasing impact on processes of innovation, R&D activities also have become more complex. We can observe a growing sophistication of learning-by-doing among creative economic agents. This more sophisticated era of global knowledge exchange is facilitated by major advances in our infrastructure networks. In this highly interactive world, many innovations are by-products of collective exchanges between cities far apart, simplified by the ease of transport and communication. Thus, there is a need for us to look more closely at various collective sequences of learning, knowledge exchange and innovation in a spatial setting. This is the primary purpose of this book.

The European Union's Information Technologies Programme 'Esprit' did there fore launch a 'Pilot action for Low Power Design' , wh ich eventually grew to 19 R&D projects and one coordination project, with an overall budget of 14 million Euro. It is meanwhile known as European Low Power Initiative for Electronic System Design (ESD-LPD) and will be completed by the end of 2001. The exposition is based on finite-dimensional representations of the homogeneous Lorentz group, and the subsequent introduction of gauge transformations, of the Abelian and non Abelian varieties. Reference to classical mechanics is avoided. Acting on the simple basis spinors and vectors, Lorentz transfonnations generate wave and field functions. Equations are obtained by the relativistic generalization of the addition of angular momenta, the wave or field functions being the solutions. For zero mass the equations may be obtained as the limits of the equations for the massive cases or by the application of the Euclidian group in two dimensions. The latter approach is illuminating in that it uncovers a loss in generality resulting from the former. Identifying momenta as eigenvalues of translations demonstrates covariance under the inhomogeneous Lorentz or Poincare group. Reference to classical mechanics is avoided. Acting on the simple basis spinors and vectors, Lorentz transfonnations generate wave and field functions. Equations are obtained by the relativistic generalization of the addition of angular momenta, the wave or field functions being the solutions. For zero mass the equations may be obtained as the limits of the equations for the massive cases or by the application of the Euclidian group in two dimensions. The latter approach is illuminating in that it uncovers a loss in generality resulting from the former. Identifying momenta as eigenvalues of translations demonstrates covariance under the inhomogeneous Lorentz or Poincare group.
