Significant advances were made during World War II, when the potential military applications of being able 'to see in the dar~' were demonstrated, and this progress has been maintained during the last forty years when many major advances have been achieved, such that the use of photodetectors for both civil and military applications is now relatively common and can be inexpensive.

Despite these screening efforts, carcinoma of the cervix remain…s one of the more common malignancies in women and it is the leading cause of cancer death in many countries in the western hemisphere. It is estimated that in 1986 there will still be 14,000 new cases of invasive cancer, with 6,800 deaths in the United States alone. Unfortunately, many of these patients present with advanced disease, posing difficult management problems for the clinician responsible for their care. The treatment of early stage invasive carcinoma of the cervix (lesions confined to the cervix and vagina) remains either radical surgery, radical radiation therapy or a combination thereof This approach is extraordinarily effective in the vast majority of patients. However, there remains a subset of patients with early stage disease that are at high risk for recurrence. Dr Kjorstad (Chapter 2) has identified adenocarcinomas and adenosqua mous carcinomas as having a particularly poor prognosis. In addition, patients with more than three positive lymph nodes or with involvement of lymph nodes outside of the pelvis have a very poor prognosis. He has iden tified the CEA as a potentially predictive marker for these patients with poor prognosis, especially in patients with adenocarcinomas.

In time, experience led all of us from the several disciplines involved in this enterprise to the conclusion that the crude diag nostic techniques available to us circa 1945-1965 had garnered us little valid information upon which to base such complex, differential diagnostic decisions. It now is gratifying to look back and review the remarkable progress that has occurred in the field of clinical neuropsychology in the four decades since I was a graduate student. In the late 1940s such pioneers as Ward Halstead, Alexander Luria, George Yacorzynski, Hans-Lukas Teuber, and Arthur Benton already were involved in clinical studies that, by the late 1960s, would markedly have improved the quality of clinical practice. However, the only psychological tests that the clinical psychologist of my immediate post-Second World War generation had as aids for the diagnosis of neurologically based conditions involving cognitive deficit were such old standbys as the Wechsler Bellevue, Rorschach, Draw A Person, Bender Gestalt, and Graham Kendall Memory for Designs Test.

Dr. Krijnen was known and respected in the national and interna tio…nal blood transfusion community as an extremely competent scientist and a beloved and admired colleague. Dr. Krijnen was intentionally honoured with the invitation to open this symposium on cryopreservation and low temperature biology in blood transfusion and be the guest of honour at this event. Unfortunately, Dr. Krijnen suddenly died on the first of June 1989. In honour and mem ory of Dr. Krijnen this symposium will therefore be dedicated to him. Since the lOth International Symposium on Blood Transfusion in 1985 highlighted the theme of 'Future developments in blood banking', major changes have occurred in the blood banking world. Most of these changes were forced upon the Blood Banks by the fear of spreading AIDS through contaminated donations. This not only led to the wide spread testing of blood, but also to a more appropriate counselling of the community and the blood donors in specific. Additionally, virus inacti vation techniques were introduced for those components derived from multiple donations and intended for a regular transfusion in haemophi lia patients and others.

There are two ways to increase yield: by improving the… control of the manufacturing process and by designing the process and the circuits in such a way as to minimize the effect of the inherent variations of the process on performance. The latter is typically referred to as 'design for manufacture' or 'statistical design'. As device sizes continue to shrink, the effects of the inherent fluctuations in the IC fabrication process will have an even more obvious effect on circuit performance. And design for manufacture will increase in importance. We have been working in the area of statistically based computer aided design for more than 13 years. During the last decade we have been working with each other, and individually with our students, to develop methods and CAD tools that can be used to improve yield during the design and manufacturing phases of IC realization. This effort has resulted in a large number of publications that have appeared in a variety of journals and conference proceedings. Thus our motivation in writing this book is to put, in one place, a description of our approach to IC yield enhancement. The UKSS originally…came together in 1978 as the Barford Group (the first meetings were held in the town of Barford), comprising academics from the four institutions that incorporated departments which primarily were con cerned with developing the theory and practice of so-called systems scienc- namely Aston University, City University, Lancaster University and the Open University. The meetings of the Barford Group were deemed to be successful, so much so that a decision was made to widen its horizons to incorporate more generally those of the United Kingdom systems community (a diffuse number of academics and practitioners) - hence the title UKSS. The society, ten years later, is extant and has achieved new levels of success in the last few years in terms of rising membership and international reputation. The membership is now drawn from a wide variety of academic and commercial and industrial organisations, and from most reaches of the nation. There is also an international contingent in the membership. It is right that there should be such diversity since the UKSS is founded on the notion of equality (of creed, sex, race, class and so on --- ). The major impetus for this workshop was the realisation, over the past 7 years, that the Epstein…-Barr virus is associated with a proportion of cases of Hodgkin's disease and is likely to play an aetiological role. There were four main aims of the workshop: first, to discuss the recent findings in relation to Epstein Barr virus and the aetiology of Hodgkin's disease; second, to relate these data to the epidemiology of Hodgkin's disease; third, to discuss other potential aetiological factors and finally, to discuss future directions for research into Hodgkin's disease. Leading experts in the field have contributed chapters to this volume. There is some overlap among chapters, particularly regarding Epstein-Barr virus, thereby allowing different groups to express views on similar topics. Perhaps, however, the most surprising feature of the workshop was the lack of controversy regarding the role of Epstein-Barr virus in Hodgkin's disease, an association that was treated with great scepticism at the beginning of the decade. The first three chapters, by Alexander, Taylor et al., and Levine el al., discuss the epidemiology of Hodgkin's disease with particular attention to clustering and genetic susceptibility. The controversy itself is evidenceofthe strong awareness that bacterial activities in natural sites are not determined by the bacteria alone. At…the same time, the best evidence that bacteria are influenced by environmental factors is the contrast between their behavior in laboratory cultures and their relatively subdued influence when in the presence of com petitors, predators, and fluctuating-often stressful-environmental conditions. Monotypic populations are admittedly reductionist, but are not therefore irrelevant to bacterial ecology. Quite the contrary. Without pure culture studies, our understanding of important and applicable bacterial activities-N fixation, for example-would still be z limited to what we could discern from a comparison of events in steamed vis-a-vis un heated soil. As was evident throughout the previous volume in this treatise, practically any method of studying natural bacterial communities upsets them while permitting only limited assessment of the respective qualities and quantitative contributions to total com munity activity of each type of bacterium present. Total activity itself is difficult to assess and is not dependably accomplished by any single method. This third volume comprises information regarding the properties of bacteria as they have been learned largely from pure culture studies. Virus classification is primarily based on chem ical and physic…al similarities, such as the size and shape of the virion, the nature of the genomic nucleic acid, the number and function of com ponent proteins, the presence of lipids and of additional structural fea tures, such as envelopes, and serological interrelationships. The families, genera, or groups of viruses that have been defined on the basis of such criteria by the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) will be described in some detail in this catalogue and illustrated by elec tron micrographs. In my present attempt to list most if not all well es tablished and studied viruses in alphabetical order, I have largely confined myself to identifying them only in such taxonomic terms, generally without quoting specific data reported for individual viruses. The intention of this series of workshops is to promote exchange of ideas and data between sc…ientists and clinicians whose interests span molecular and cell biology, development and differentiation, oncology, and genetic and developmental pathologies. It is hoped that such interdisciplinary discussions may give rise to fruitful insights. The meetings are structured to give ample time for discussion after each formal presentation and culminate in a session of general discussion which is reported at the end of the volume of proceedings. We are very grateful to the participants, all of whom participated in the discussion and whose contributions were essential to the success of the meeting. Novel ideas were often put forward and explored thoroughly from different angles. We normally expect to achieve quite rapid publication of the proceedings of the meeting and are grateful to authors who produced typescripts of their contributions expeditiously, but, as may sometimes be the case with multi-author works, some contributors had difficulty in meeting schedules for submitting manuscripts or corrections of the text of the discussion, and in one case we have been unable to publish any record of the contribution. Our committment to the publication of the discussion, allowing participants to make corrections to the transcript of the session, such as insertion of references and clarification of oral contributions, has also imposed some delay. 404 pp. Englisch.

While certain traditions have been dispensed with in this volume the standard p…attern for the foreword has its advantages, so here at least tradition will be adhered to - though in reverse order from that stated above. It The apologia can be dismissed briefly, for the editors have explained in their General Introduction that this is not the book of a meeting. All that remains to be added here is a description of the modus operandi. Being aware that speaking and writing are different activities requiring diffe rent presentation, each participant was asked to prepare a script for publication resembling what he would speak about only in outline. It may be that as a result the essays lack detail and are thin under some of the classical headings of scientific writing. So the reader, in turn, is asked to accept this and give his attention instead to the concepts and ideas contained therein. It may even come about that this kind of presentation will in the end result in something less ephemeral than the standard conference proceedings book. Criticism of conference proceedings and the type of meetings that give rise to these little-loved tomes is not a new phenomenom. 192 pp. Englisch.
