This year the Symposium 'Kinin 1975' was held on the 15th - 17th of July. Participation at the Symposium drew attention to the fact that 1975 was a particularly difficult year due to the delicate international economic situation as well as the time restrictions for organizing the Symposium as a satellite conference to the Sixth International Congress of Pharmacology held in Helsinki, Finland. Despite these difficulties, the 'Kinin 175' Symposium was an unquestioned success, due, in great part, to the more than 40 contributors who presented their most current studies at the customary high scientific standard, presentations that provoked and stimulated considerable discussion and debate. While our family tree now includes new and active members, the presence of many members of our 'Kinin' society unable to attend was missed. In particular, we mourne the death of Professor E. Werle, one of the most outstanding pioneers in the field of the kallikrein-kinin system. His friendship, participation and counsel was, and will continue to be, sorely missed by his many colleagues and students who are indebted to him for his voluminous and scientifically expert contributions continued until the very end of his most full and productive life. On April 19-20, 1974 a group of scholars from four continents met on the campus of the University of Oklahoma for an International Symposium on Con A. This volume contains all lectures presented by the invited speakers on this occasion, as well as the abstracts for all shorter technical papers which were presented. The daily use of portable sophisticated electronic calculators (some of them rivaling general-purpose minicomputers in their capa bi li ti es) has hastened this development. Over the past several years, computer assisted experimentation has assumed an important role in the experimental laboratory. Mini- and microcomputer systems have become an important part of the physical scientist's array of analytical instruments. Prompted by our beliefthat this was an inevitable development, we began several years aga to develop the curricular materials presented in this manual. At the outset, several objectives seemed important to uso First, insofar as possible, the experiments included should be thoroughly tested and error free. Second, they should be compatible with a variety of laboratory computer, data-acquisition, and control systems. Third, little or no previous background in either electronics or programming should be necessary. (Of course, such background would be advantageous. ) To satisfy these objectives, we decided to adopt a widespread high-level computer language, BASIC, suitably modified for the purpose. Furthermore, we have purposely avoided specifying any particular system or equipment. Rather, the functional characteristics of both hardware and software required are stipulated. In the case of proteins, such crosslinking often results in important changes in chemical, functional, nutritional, and biomedical properties, besides physical properties simply related to molecular size and shape. (Nucleic acids, carbohydrates, and other biopolymers are correspondingly affected.) Since proteins are ubiquitous, the consequences of their crosslinking are widespread and often profound. Scientists from many disciplines including organic chemistry, bio chemistry, protein chemistry, food science, nutrition, radiation biology, pharmacology, physiology, medicine, and dentistry are, therefore, minutely interested in protein crosslinking reactions and their implications. Previous meetings in this series were held in Tel Aviv (Israel), Baden (Austria), Madrid (Spain) and Maastricht (The Netherlands). The proceedings of each of these meetings were published by Plenum. The next meeting will be in Japan. This Symposium differed from those that went before in that it per mitted us to honor Dr. J. E. Seegmiller, Professor of Medicine at the University of California San Diego, for his many contributions to our understanding of purine metabolism in man. This publication is dedicated as a Festschrift to Jay. Dr. Richard W. E. Watts delivered the keynote address outlining in scholarly fashion the history of Dr. Seegmiller's accomplishments in research on purine metabolism and the great number of currently active scientists in this field who have worked with him. This address is published as the first contribution to Volume I. Dr. Dewitt Stetten, Jr. , was scheduled to be the speaker at our banquet. Unfortunate ly, he could not be with us. Dr. Seegmiller has written an appreciation of Dr. Stetten and his contributions to our field, and this has been pub lished following Dr. Watts' paper. The growth of knowledge in purine and pyrimidine metabolism continues to be exponential.
