Earlier work has been limited to simple problems amenable to closed for…m solutions, but now the computer permits the numerical solution of complex systems of nonlinear differ ential equations. The numerical approach provides quantitative infor mation, but for practical reasons it must be limited to a rather narrow range of the parameters of the problem. Consequently, it is desirable to obtain broader qualitative information about the solutions by in vestigating from a more fundamental mathematical point of view the structure of the differential equations. This theoretical approach can actually complement and guide the computational approach by narrow ing down trial and error procedures, pinpointing singularities and suggesting methods for handling them. The study of the structure of the differential equations may also clarify some physical principles and suggest new experiments. A serious limitation ofthe theoretical approach is that many of the results obtained, such as the sufficient conditions for the stability of the steady state, turn out to be very conservative. Thus the theoretical and computational approaches are best used to gether for the purpose of understanding, designing, and controlling chemically reacting systems. We have called attention to four aspects: (i) A choice has to be made ab…out the kind of equations one extracts from the predominantly verbal arguments about the basic assumptions, and subsequently uses as a starting point for a rigorous mathematical analysis. Though differential equations are easy to formulate (different mechanisms don't interact in infinites imal time intervals and so end up as separate terms in the equations) they may be hard to interpret rigorously as infinitesimal generators. Integral equations constitute an attractive alternative. (ii) The ability of physiologically structured population models to increase our un derstanding of the relation between mechanisms at the i-level and phenomena at the p-level will depend strongly on the development of dynamical systems lab facilities which are applicable to this class of models. (iii) Physiologically structured population models are ideally suited for the for mulation of evolutionary questions. Apart from the special case of age (see Charlesworth 1980, Yodzis 1989, Caswell 1989, and the references given there) hardly any theory exists at the moment. The understanding of the control of cell growth is also fundamental to grasp phylogenic and ontogenic development. Why organisms have developed increasingly sophisticated mechanisms that control their size and that of their organs, how different cells originate, some destined for renewal and repair, others for specialized functions in a postmitotic state or evolving through division, others like the germinal cells waiting for the signal to start another organism. There is one mechanism of growth containment, however, about which we know very little. It concerns the structural characteristics of the cell, i.e. the relationship between structure and function. How structure can change the response to identical signals. There remains - and perhaps this has grown in recent year- the technical significance of geometrical optics. It provides the basis for the design of optical instruments for use in everyday life as well as for scientific and industrial purposes. This small book is intended to treat two aspects of the subject: the laws of geometrical optics and their application to the design of optical instruments. The theory is not based on Snell's law of refraction but on a conservation law for the radiated energy. The subject can then be treated in a manner appropriate to contemporary physics: auxiliary geometrical parameters become unnecessary and the singularities resulting from their use vanish. The laws of geometrical optics can be formulated much more simply and their physical significance is revealed more clearly. I have tried to present the material in a form satisfactory both to teachers and to workers in the technical applications of optics.
