TOWARDS THE AEGEAN SEA is a personal narrative of four years spent by Geoffrey Kirk as a young man in the Royal Navy between 1941 and 1945: first as a seaman in HMS Hurricane, an escort-leader in the North Atlantic, then as First Lieutenant in a Coastal Forces motor gunboat, finally as a member of the Levant Schooner Flotilla. This somewhat exotic organization enabled the author to sail in Greek caiques, at six and a half knots, from bays in neutral Turkey deep into the occupied Aegean. It was, that last year or so, a kind of fulfilment of a dream, one that for him had begun with wonderful Kindergarten Latin and led, through Classics at school and Cambridge, to Homer's wine-dark sea and a life devoted thereafter to Greece, both ancient and modern. Something about this Geoffrey Kirk tells in the first two chapters and the last; it is, after all, connected.
