Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - "Crook always maintained that, since his command occupied the field after the battle, he was not defeated at the Rosebud, and that if the battle had gone according to his orders, it would have resulted in a real triumph for his men. This view was also held by his superiors, although they called it a 'barren victory.' His part in the campaign was to form a junction with the other advancing columns, combining with them in returning the infractious Sioux to their reservations. His immediate purpose was to find and destroy the village of Crazy Horse. He accomplished none of these objectives. Instead he retired from the scene, permitting the forces of Crazy Horse to concentrate their strength against the troops to the north." From With Crook at the RosebudThe 1868 Treaty of Fort Laramie gave the Sioux and Cheyenne Indian tribes control over a wide region, covering Montana, Wyoming, Nebraska, and part of the Dakotas. But in the 1870s gold was discovered in the Black Hills, and white settlers invaded Indian territory in desperate search for the precious mineral. Clashes between miners and Indians erupted. After trying other means of settling the disputes, the U.S. government decreed that all Indians in the northwest should be living on reservations by January 1876. The Sioux and the Cheyenne refused to obey, so the Bureau of Indian Affairs called in the military to enforce the order. Brigadier General George Crook led the Big Horn and Yellowstone Expeditionary forces into southern Montana against rebellious Sioux. But Crazy Horse, leading a party of Sioux and Cheyenne, defeated a portion of Crooks command at Powder River in March 1876. In his chagrin and determination for revenge, Crook led his troops to the Rosebud canyon to destroy Crazy Horse's village. The two powerful forces, each numbering more than one thousand men, met at the Rosebud River on June 17. At the end of the fierce, day-long battle, Crook returned to his base nearly forty miles away, convinced that he had won. Time would prove, however, that the battle resulted in a stalemate. Crook's force was removed from the larger campaign and he was unable to come to Custer's aid at the Little Big Horn eight days later.Though the Battle of the Rosebud had a significant impact on the rest of the campaign against the Sioux, it has often been eclipsed by publicity surrounding the Battle of the Little Big Horn. It was not until 1956, when With Crook at the Rosebud was first published by Stackpole, that the first clear history of the battle emerged.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - "The stories contained herein are all of actual happenings and actual participants; here are no fictitious names, no colored circumstances. They are part of the real history of the West, and for that reason I am not ashamed to place this volume in the hands of any interested boy or girl, youth or elderly person, who may desire to know the truth about one of the leading Indian battles, and other important frontier happenings pertaining thereto, and the men who played leading parts therein. Every character mentioned in each chapter was a living, breathing person, and every incident related in this book can be vouched for and verified." From Troopers with Custer.Although everyone in Custer's immediate command was killed during the fighting at the Battle of Little Big Horn on June 25-26, 1876, others who participated in the battle survived. Troopers with Custer tells their stories, often in their own words.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - In early 1942, following a string of successes, the Japanese seized nearly 10,000 American soldiers, among them Pvt. Oscar Smith, on Manila Bay and marched them to a near-certain death through Bataan. A few days later they put Smith to work burying the stacked bodies of his own men.Robert Salmon had already served his time in the military during World War I, fighting for his native England. He was teaching biochemistry to Chinese students in Shanghai when the Japanese arrested him in 1943 and condemned him, with thousands of confused Western missionaries, to spend the remainder of World War II in an abandoned tobacco factory.German soldiers, marching toward what would be known as the Battle of the Bulge, captured Ed Uzemack, a Chicago journalist turned soldier, at an abandoned Luxembourg inn. By cattle car they sent him to a crowded, wind-swept POW camp, once the final internment spot for Jewish concentration camp victims. In 1945 Hermann Pfengle, just fifteen years old, had been released from German military duty and was retreating through Czech farm country when American soldiers seized him and his friends. The Americanswho he had hoped would treat him more humanely than the feared Russians or German SS wouldsent him to a camp close to his home, where he languished with thousands of German prisoners behind a wire fence, watching many of them die from hunger, exposure, and dehydration.Helga Wunsch thought she had survived the war when Germany surrendered to the Allies, but she was soon forced to face the new horrors of Soviet occupation in her eastern German town. When she was arrested by the Russians on bogus espionage charges, she was merely a teenage schoolgirl planning for her graduation exams. As a political prisoner, she would spend her next ten years under constant threat of torture, beatings, and starvation. These survivors offer uniquely personal stories in this fascinating narrative of imprisonment during and immediately after World War II. Their gripping accounts weave determination and despair, grief and human, horror and hardship together in a universal tapestry of prison life, revealing details never before told about World War II POWs and the often unspeakable hardships they sustained.Their stories take the reader on an unforgettable journey through history and across the world, from the heinous crimes against prisoners in the Philippines to the little-known and undocumented life within political prisoners in the former East Germany.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - "Custer had been usually effective as an Indian fighter for several years He was adept in bringing off surprise attacks that crushed and paralyzed resistance. Both his reputation and his experience as an Indian campaigner were second to none; and the Seventh Cavalrywas held one of the best regiments in the service. It was but natural, then, that when the regiment marched proudly away from the mouth of the Rosebud on its mission, Terry could and did feel confident that if he could but catch the recalcitrant braves of Sitting Bull between Custer and Gibbon, he would certainly crush and capture them; and if, perchance, Custer found them elsewhere than was expected, the Seventh Cavalry, under such a leader, would be more than equal to any emergency." From the Story of the Little Big HornIn June 1876, General George A Custer was detailed to a column under General Alfred H. Terry. After being sent ahead of General George Crook at the Rosebud River, Custer and the Seventh Cavalry discovered a Souix encampment on June 25. Not realizing that he was far outnumbered, Custer divided his regiment into three sections, sending two, led by Major Marcus A. Reno and Captain Frederick W. Benteen, to attack upstream. Custer's section stayed to launch a frontal assault, and every man under Custer was killed.Soon after the massacre, Custer became a tragic hero in the eyes of the American public, and the event achieved an almost mythological reputation. It was not until fifty years later, however, that the first book-length history of the battle, The Story of the Little Big Horn, was published.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - "If we wish to understand why Custer, Reno, Benteen, or any of the troop commanders did what they did, we must, in imagination, ride at their elbows and try to see what they saw at any given time and place, the nature of the terrain, what they knew or believed about the position and numbers of the enemy, the whereabouts of the different detachments of the regiment, and try to understand their doubts and perplexities resulting from insufficient information I have sought to explain in a systematic way they why of the battle no so much by dint of quotation from the sources as by subjecting these sources to a rigid analysis in order to discover what they seem to spell after all definite inconsistencies have been canceled out." From Legend into HistoryWith the possible exception of Gettysburg, no battle fought on American soil has caused so much discussion or widespread speculation as the epic Custer fight on the wild, rugged terrain north of the Little Big Horn River in Montana on June 25, 1876. The stories that have been told and retold are legion, some of them lurid and without basis in fact of logic; legends based on misconceptions and unsound premises have come to be accepted as fact, and the definitive history can never be written because the 210 officers and men under Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer's immediate command were all killed. There is no mystery as to what happened, nor approximately when. The intriguing unknown factors have been the how and the why. Charles Kuhlman believed that the broken character of the terrain, unsuited to the irresistible cavalry charge that the Indians feared, played a major and often unrecognized part in the relative tactics of the opposing forces, and that time and space factors, synchronized with known facts painstakingly careened and analyzed, and limned against the background of the actual terrain, would provide the clues to solve the mystery of why and how. Kuhlman's 64-page defense of Custer's actions, Dis Custer Disobey Orders at the Battle of the Little Big Horn , is also included in this edition.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - This autobiographical history of America spans the forty years before the Civil War. America was a different country before the war, which seemed to take over the nation wholly, even after it was finished. It is difficult to imagine the time before the war without the shadow of war and civil unrest looming. When this book was first re-printed in 1937, the publisher wrote, "The vigorous, endlessly hopeful America before the Civil War is a constant challenge to our writers," and so this book filled the gaps and gave an ideal image. Dr. Thomas Low Nichols was a medical student at Dartmouth, but dropped out to pursue journalism and literature, as well as women's rights activism. When the war broke out in 1861, he went to England to focus on his work. He didn't want to sully the image he had of his home country, and so, recorded everything he remembered as it was.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - This sweeping recasting of American naval history is a bold departure from the conventional "sea power" approach. Volume Two of History of the U.S. Navy shows how the Navy in World War II helped to upset the traditional balance in Europe and Asia. Days after Pearl Harbor, Admiral Ernest J. King took command of a navy overwhelmed by the demands of war. King devised grand strategies to defeat the Axis and promoted a cadre of fighting admiralsHalsey, Spruance, Hewitt, Kincaid, and Turnerwho waged unprecedented in complexity and violence. New sources provide an entirely fresh look at the Battle of the Atlantic, the invasion of Europe, and the great naval campaigns in the Pacific. This book contains the first comprehensive interpretation of the U.S. Navy's role in the Cold War, when the United States found itself the global bailiff. Love demonstrated that the Navy's abiding priority was to capture and maintain a share of the strategic bombardment mission by building new ships, planes, submarines, and mission to deliver nuclear weapons. The dawn of the New World Oder found the Navy still on duty as the mailed fist of American foreign policy, standing watch in the Persian Gulf and, at the same time, off the coast of West Africa during Liberia's violent civil war. Fresh challenges, the author argues, call for a newly balanced fleet and continued attention to America's first line of defense.…
