Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The Communist revolution promised Chinese women an end to thousands of years of subjugation, an equality with men in all matters legal, political, social, and economic. This book examines the extent to which this promise has been kept. Based on nearly a year of field research and interviews with over 300 women in six widely separated rural and urban areas, it gives us a vivid picture of Chinese women today - their day-to-day lives, their views of the present, and their hopes for the future. To date nothing approximating equality has been achieved: in working conditions, in pay, in educational opportunity. In the cities, and to a lesser extent in the countryside, women are better off than in pre-revolutionary China. But nowhere except in the rhetoric of the regime are they equal to men. Nor does the immediate future look much brighter, given the continuing social constraints, the government's controversial family limitation program, and the nature of the new economic policies introduced in 1980. So far as possible, the women interviewed are allowed to speak for themselves. Some take refuge behind government slogans, some are shy or wary, but a surprising number are quick to give their own opinions despite an ever-present government cadre. These opinions, combined with the author's astute observations on their local and national context, add up to a wholly new perspective on an all too familiar problem.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'It's not what she said, it's the way that she said it,' is a complaint we have all heard (or made) some time or another. What does it refer to It obviously relates to the various forms of wordless communication, but especially to the speaker's use of intonation-the rise and fall of the pitch of the voice-to convey sarcasm or resignation, anger or apprehension, or any of scores of other moods. In this summation of over forty years of investigation and reflection, the author analyzes the nature, variety and utility of intonation, using some 700 examples from everyday English speech.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'Every Western student of Japanese classical literature of pre-modern history is indebted to Helen McCullough for her many major contributions to our knowledge and understanding of the literature and culture of the Heian and medieval periods. Indeed, every undertaking to which this distinguished scholar has set her hand over her long and productive career has resulted in a standardwork, a work whose rigorous scholarship and accuracy have invariably commanded the highest admiration and respect. Now with this exhaustive and definitive study and set of translations, Professor McCullough has added yet another major achievement to her long list . The whole story is here, in a work of extraordinary scholarship.' Robert H. Brower, Harvard Journal of Asiatic Studies.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - This study of Durkheim seeks to help the reader to achieve a historical understanding of his ideas and to form critical judgments about their value. To some extent these tow aims are contradictory. On the one hand, one seeks to understand: what did Durkheim really mean, how did he see the world, how did his ideas related to one another and how did they develop, how did they related to their biographical and historical context, how were they received, what influence did they have and to what criticism were they subjected, what was it like not to make certain distinctions, not to see certain errors, of fact or of logic, not to know what has subsequently become known.
