Bomb blast barriers went up, cops carrying larger guns seemed to be everywhere, and whilst the increased presence of security was designed, in part, to make New Yorkers feel safe, it reminded Anderson that something was deeply wrong. Then, in the wake of Occupy Wall Street, the death of Eric Garner and the election of Trump, Anderson found himself making photographs of cops on the streets of New York City once again, as a form of unconscious protest on a larger sense of authority. On assessing the images he was making, Anderson began to see them as something entirely different than a protest or commentary on power - there was almost a sentimentality. Here upended traditional documentary photography, turning his camera on himself and his social circle, producing a ground-breaking series of raw and intimate photographs chronicling the disintegration of the American dream. Clark's deeply intimate images exposed the previously unseen lives of suburban American teenagers, living a transgressive, outlaw lifestyle, hanging out in crash pads and committing burglaries and armed robberies to score dope. Nel 1968, il fotografo africano Rachidi Bissiriou ha aperto il suo studi…o fotografico, Studio Plaisir, nella sua città natale, Kétou in Benin, che ha gestito fino alla sua chiusura nel 2004. Il tempismo è stato notevole: Bissiriou aveva solo 18 anni e il Benin aveva dichiarato la sua indipendenza dal dominio francese solo otto anni prima, nel 1960. Armato di una macchina fotografica Yashica a doppia lente, Bissiriou documentò questi tempi inebrianti, trascorrendo i tre decenni successivi a scattare fotografie in bianco e nero della gente del posto in un formato standard di 6x6 cm. Mentre i ritratti tradizionali di quei tempi spesso mostravano i soggetti senza sorriso e con una rigida formalità, le immagini di Bissiriou sono notevoli per la loro semplicità e una freschezza che sembra assolutamente contemporanea. E ho cercato altre famiglie che potessero lasciarmi fotografare anche a casa. Mi sono avvicinata alla gente nei negozi di alimentari e nelle piste da bowling, da Woolworth's e nei corner's stores, dicendo che avrei dato loro alcune foto in cambio del permesso di andare a fotografarle a casa. Nonostante ricevessi molti rapidi rifiuti e sguardi sospettosi, riuscii anche a farmi invitare in molte case. I gruppi di auto-aiuto gay incoraggiarono un cambiamento nel comportamento sessuale e una riduzione del numero di partner."Queste fotografie sono state fatte a Londra. Le coppie si definiscono tali in base a vari criteri; alcune vivono insieme, altre no, altre sono state insieme per poco tempo, altre per molto tempo.
