Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. A Very clean copy. Wellington at Work in the 1890s is compiled from two rich sources: illustrations from four beautifully produced posters that came out in 1895 as supplements to the New Zealand Times, and supporting text from the 1897 Cyclopedia of New Zealand. The result is a colourful account of late Victorian life, with some intriguing facts - did you know that a shipyard in Manners Street built ocean-going steamships, or that a Lambton Quay chemist produced chocolate-flavoured worm tablets for ailing Wellingtonians? This is the companion volume to last year's book Old Wellington in Colour.…

Soft cover. Zustand: Fine. 1st Edition. Giving the Devil His Due: Demonology & the Christchurch Civic Creche Case by Kenneth Bragan. Publisher: Steele Roberts & Associates Ltd, 2009. Review copy (before publishing). Near new softback, no inscriptions. Ken Bragan offers a psychological analysis of aspects of the Christchurch case and places it in a historical context, recalling Salem and the great European witch-hunt. The Christchurch Civic Creche case in which Peter Ellis was convicted of the sexual abuse of children in his care, smoulders in the public mind. Was justice done? Did demonic fears influence the judgement of professionals and others involved? Did scapegoating play a part? Important questions - because false accusations damage the innocent, feed public hysteria and affect many lives. There were many dark sides to the Civic Creche case; this book deepens our understanding of why it all happened, so such events are less likely to occur again. ALL PHOTOS ARE OF THE ACTUAL BOOK. His activities fused with Nga Tamatoa and Te Roopu o te Matakite and culminated in the Maori land march in 1975. Later Tama was a pioneer in the pursuit of Maori intellectual property, as an initiator of the Wai 262 claim. Tama had a high profile in HART - Halt All Racist Tours - and coined its name. He ran onto Athletic Park to disrupt the 1970 All Black trials, and during the 1981 Springbok tour was a marshal in the Molesworth Street confrontation with the police. Soft cover. Zustand: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Memoirs of a Century: SIGNED By Jack Harris. Inscribed to previous named owner. SCARCE SIGNED COPY. Paperback very good condition, minor creasing to corners. Sir Jack Harris Bt inherited his baronetcy from his father, but would have earned a knighthood in his own right, given his impact as a pioneering manufacturer and civic leader in New Zealand. This readable and entertaining memoir begins with grandfather Wolf Harris setting up a business in New Zealand during the gold rush era. Sir Jack's eccentric mother was a suffragette who later became a member of the notorious Aleister Crowley's coven, designed Tarot cards and pursued Eastern mysticism. His father, a Liberal MP who went to school with Winston Churchill and did indeed know Lloyd George, represented the cockneys and pearly kings of Bethnal Green in the House of Commons. Jack, born in London and educated in Cambridge, set out in the Great Depression to rescue the family business in New Zealand, and under his helmsmanship his firm, Bing Harris, became our largest manufacturer. Like his outspoken wife Patricia, who also features in this book, Sir Jack never shied from public profile on matters of conscience. He will long be remembered for his leadership in the successful Save Manapouri campaign, a milestone of New Zealanders' environmental awareness. Signed by Author(s).…
