From the Foreword: WITH the publication of this volume the Massachusetts Historical Society completes a project it undertook more than seven decades ago. Since 1919, when the Society issued the first volume of the Journals of the House of Representatives of Massachusetts, it has added to the series almost every year. Only the two greatest traumas of the twentieth century, the Depression and World War II, forced the temporary suspension of publication between ^936 and 193 9 and again in 1941 and 1944. Over the course of seventy-one years the Society has published fifty-five volumes in a total of sixty-five parts. Each number reproduces a document central to the study of the public life of Massachusetts, the formal, printed minutes of its lower house, complemented by an introduction and an index. The moving force behind the series was Worthington C. Ford, the Society's editor of publications between 1908 and 1929,' Beyond the front door of 1154 Boylston Street Ford's name has unfortunately slipped into obscurity since his death in 1941, but he was a dynamic figure while he served the Society, a man of national as well as local prominence in historical circles. Over the course of the Society's two centuries of public service, perhaps only Jeremy Belknap, who brought its founders together in 1791, contributed more to the development of its programs than Ford. Worthington Chauncey Ford was born in Brooklyn in 1858, the son of Gordon L. and Emily Ellsworth (Fowler) Ford. Gordon Ford was a businessman, lawyer, and bibliophile who pursued his interest in American books and manuscripts during his leisure hours. At the time of his death in 1891 his collection of Americana-50,000 books and nearly 100,000 manuscripts-was reputed to be the finest collection of its kind then in private hands.2 Emily Ford had historical interests, too. A published poet, she also prepared a two-volume biography of her grandfather, Noah Webster, replete with extracts from his correspondence and diary. Two of the Fords' sons inherited their passion for Americana, Worthington and his younger brother Paul. As boys they established their own small association for printing bibliographical and documentary works, the Historical Printing Club of Brooklyn, which issued more than eighty titles between 1876 and 1899, and in his own right each became a respected editor and scholar. Until he was almost thirty, editing and Americana were avocations for Worthington while he pursued employment in business and journalism. In 1885, however, Ford received an appointment as chief of the Bureau of Statistics in the Department of State. His responsibilities included the care of a large collection of early government records. Soon he was making plans to edit and publish the most important of these sources. 258 pages.…
