Tells the story, gravely neglected by many writers on the Second World War, of the brave men whose efforts were so central to the Allied victory. Charles Whiting, second world war veteran and historian, Charles also wrote under the names Leo Kessler, Duncan Sterling, Ian Harding, John Kerrigan and others. Almost always writing on a war or military theme, whether fact or fiction, by the time of his death in 2007, Whiting was known as a phenomena of the publishing industry, with more than 350 titles to his (several) names, most associated with accurately researched and well-written war histories and novels with a war background drenched in sex and violence. He has become collectible, especially for novels and histories published under his own name and those of Ian Harding, Leo Kessler and John Kerrigan. We have many titles by the same author - please inquire for discounts if purchasing multiple titles.

First Edition. First Edition. octavo, pictorial heavy paper wrappers. 160pp. Spellmount, Illustrated with photographs. Captain Stephen Wynn Vickers joined the Cheshire Regiment in August 1914, but after being badly wounded, he remustered to the RFC (Royal Flying Corps). While other young pilots were killed or injured almost as soon as they got their wings, Captain Vickers survived numerous crash and forced landings. He joined 101 Squadron in 1917, completed 73 sorties over enemy territory before being repatriated in May 1918, and was awarded the newly inaugurated DFC as well as the MC. With the war drawing to a close, he became a flying instructor at an RAF station in Lincolnshire, but he did not live long enough to receive either his medals or the distinction that he deserved. First Edition. First Edition. large octavo, dark blue boards in dust jacket. 224pp. Spellmount, In 1917, David Lloyd George declared that airmen were "the cavalry of the clouds . . . the knighthood of this war." This romantic image was fostered post-war by writers of adventure stories and the stunts of Hollywood filmmakers, and yet it was far from the harsh reality of life of an airman. From their baptism of fire in 1914 carrying out reconnaissance and experiencing the first dogfights, to the breakthrough in 1918 which claimed heavy casualties, the aerial defenders of Britain were continually tested. Here John Sweetman describes the development of British air power during World War I on the Western Front, which culminated in the creation of the first independent air force, the RAF. By making use of the correspondence of airmen and ground staff of all nationalities, he illustrates the impact this new type of conflict had on those involved and their families at home. As new condition, jacket not price clipped. large octavo, dark blue boards in dust jacket.
