Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. Serious, collector grade association copy of John Slingsby's authoritative study of British military postal operations in the Black Sea theatre, 1918 to 1923. Published by the Stuart Rossiter Trust Fund in 2004. What sets this example apart is the provenance and accompanying material. From the library of Nathaniel Tarn, born Edward Michael Mendelson, poet, anthropologist, and noted intellectual collector, this copy includes an original typed letter signed by Slingsby and addressed directly to "Mr Tarn," dated October 2004. The letter references the enclosed erratum slip, also present, and provides a direct link between author and recipient at the time of publication. This is not just a reference book, it is an association copy with signed author correspondence, tying together two serious scholarly figures. Material of this kind rarely surfaces in the already niche field of military postal history. The book itself is a respected and detailed work covering field post offices, postal routes, censorship practices, rates, and military organization across Turkey, Transcaucasia, South Russia, and surrounding regions during the chaotic post war period. Essential for collectors of British Army postal history, military mail, and early 20th century geopolitical postal systems. Condition is very good. Clean, tight, and well preserved with only light handling wear. Interior pages are crisp and unmarked. Includes original signed author letter to Tarn, erratum slip, and publisher correspondence. A complete and desirable provenance rich example.
