Zustand: new. (Hardcover, 2000 ). 2000 1st edition. 4to (195 x 252mm). Ppxiv,194. Colour and b/w photographs, colour plates of flies. Blue boards, spine titled in gilt. An accumulation of miscellaneous faults. Some use and underlining, working copy in dust-wrapper. "At a time when angling technology is developing rapidly, Geoffrey Bucknall emphasises the age-old truths of observation and learning from the water. Improved technology is not a substitute for basic skills. Flyfishing Tactics for Brown Trout recommends a much lighter lackle system than traditionally used in Britain, and also teaches the revolutionary casting system Bucknall has developed in order to exploit the ultra-light line he favours. This book is ideal for any angler who wishes to develop his skills." Chapters include: General considerations; A new philosophy; A new approach to fly casting; The compulsion for distance; Rivers and streams; The upstream wet fly; Down and across; The nymph of the stream; The vanishing becks; Dry fly tactics; Still waters; A general survey; Boat control; Organised bank fishing; The mysterious ferox; Trolling lures; Mayfly and large floaters; Still water nymphs; Standard dry fly; Sticklebackers; Buzzers; Dapping; Float tubing for trout anglers; Standard lure fishing; Snapshots of memory. .

Zustand: new. (Hardcover, 2000). (1929) 2000 new edition. 8vo (153 x 227mm). Ppxi,136. B/w photographs. Pictorial laminated boards, issued without a dust-wrapper. Fine new copy. Susan Scales provides up-to-date comments and a commentary on this 1929 classic on spaniel and retriever field trials. This book presents Charles Alington's original text, with paragraph-by-paragraph commentary from Susan Scales inserted in a lighter type-face beneath the paragraph under discussion. "Charles Alington's book is a mine of analytical information which has never been surpassed, before or since, and the greatest mystery is that the book was ever allowed to go out of print. Many of Alington's observations are applicable today regarding basic dog work, but the field trial world has altered beyond recognition and base commercialism is king." Susan Scales. "Susan Scales has most ably brought the book up to date with her own trenchant comments and her introduction is bold, provocative and completely accurate regarding field trials today. Susan had vast experience in the Labrador sphere and never afraid of controversy. She was a panel 'A' Field Trial judge of retrievers and also judged up to championship level." Chapters include: How field trials are conducted; Equity in judging; Hard mouths; retrieving and delivery; some tests; Control and natural ability; Nose and scent; Runners; Pace, style, and drive; Handling water and other tests; Spaniel trials; What field trials have done. PREVIOUS PRICE £16.95.

(Hardcover, 1987). (1976) 1987 revised edition. 8vo (140 x 223mm). Ppx,274. B/w photographs and illustrations. Dark green boards, spine titled in gilt. Slight marks to bottom edge, internally clean. Very good in slightly used dust-wrapper. One of the best gundog training manuals available. This is the revised edition of 1987. "Gundog Training is written by a long practising professional who has a long list of Field Trial Champions to his credit. Keith Erlandson, a gamekeeper and gundog trainer for many years, mainly occupied with Spaniels, has made up twenty Field Trial Champions and had several more winners, including Labradors. His opinions, often openly controversial, are therefore backed by considerable experience, and give for what they are worth, without any attempt to impose them on the reader. There are chapters on breeds, choice of puppy, pre-training, and all phases of training including equipment, obedience training, water work and advanced training, shooting days, field trials, good mouths and bad, and the wildfowler's dog." .

He was a neighbour of Sawyer, who was a river-keeper on the Hampshire Avon, and spent two years learning the subject from him. In the first edition he acknowledges Sawyer as his mentor, but this acknowledement was expunged from later editions. This new edition has a new introduction and notes by Robert Spaight and memoirs of Kite by well-known anglers. .
