In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Good. First Edition. At least four prior owners, including Goodwin Louch (1741), Mr. Smith (1829), and L. Walker (1876) who have inscribed themselves in pen nicely, and than bookplate inside front flap (Frances Emma Watkins). Rebacked most handsomely in a light brown calf leather, five raised bands to spine,…blind-stamped title to brown leather label at spine, perhaps incorporating original paneled calf boards, which appear sympathetic to/contemporary with the period (Miller, Books Will Speak Plain). Printed for a number of booksellers quite attractively by Tho. Hodgkin, and in apparent First Edition state, London, 1710 (Allibone, Volume II, 1454). xxxi, 1-384, [xvi pp. of Content and Errata]. Text-block is predictably waffled but yet yet and unmarked, still bright. The author was born at Bedford, was educated at Bedford School, and then studied for the ministry (1758?62) at Daventry Academy under Caleb Ashworth, says his Wikipedia entry, and in 1762 "became afternoon preacher to the independent (originally presbyterian) congregation at Mare Street, Hackney, and was ordained on 21 November 1763." He became eventually a "morning preacher" for the Church of England beginning in 1766. He ran a boarding school, too, and was friendly with the theologian Job Orton.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets.

He was born aro…und 1730 and educated at Eton. In 1754 he married Elizabeth Nightingale. She died in May 1755, just a few days after the birth of their only son who was also named Wilmot. In 1763 he married Dorothy Shafto, and they had four children. The Vaughan family seat was at Trawsgoed in Cardiganshire, but Wilmot also inherited estates at Berwick-on-Tweed from his maternal uncle and in Devon through his wife.In 1755 Wilmot Vaughan entered Parliament as M.P for Cardiganshire, a seat he held until 1761. In 1765 he was elected as Member for Berwick, and then from 1768 he again held Cardiganshire until 1796. In 1766, he succeeded his father as 4th Viscount Lisburne but was able to retain his seat in the House of Commons because this title was in the Irish Peerage and did not entitle him to a seat in the House of Lords. Vaughan was active in politics, serving as a Lord of Trade from 1769 to 1770 and then as a Lord of the Admiralty until 1782. In 1776 he was created Earl of Lisburne, but this was still in the Irish Peerage and Vaughan hankered after the status of an English title. He had hopes that the Duke of Portland would arrange matters when the latter headed the coalition ministry of 1783, but he was overlooked. Vaughan's correspondence with Portland on the subject became increasingly bitter and rancorous as the years passed without fulfilling this ambition. Because of his declining health, he retired from Parliament in 1796 and died in 1800.Wilmot Vaughan was known as a man of learning and culture. He employed Robert Adam and Lancelot Brown to improve the house and grounds at Mamhead Park, which remained the principal family seat of the Earls of Lisburne until it was sold in 1822. Adam's work in the late 1760s included a design for a library.Provenance: Estate of Joaquin Romero Maura. Mr Maura, great-grandson of a five-time prime minister of Spain, lived in the UK for most of his life and co-directed the Iberian Centre with the illustrious historian Sir Raymond Carr. Joaquín Romero Maura - died lin June 2022 at the age of 81, at a senior home in Zaragoza, Spain. The historian - who held a PhD from Oxford University - was widowed and childless. He had been a confidante of the former Spanish king.Joaquín Romero Maura (Niza, 1940-Zaragoza, 5 de junio de 2022) fue un historiador español. Priced to go. ?Of the Law of Nature and Nations, originally published in 1672 as De Jure Naturae et Gentium Libri Octo, proposed a system of private, public, and international law based on natural law. It was written by Baron Samuel von Pufendorf (1632 ? 1694), a German political philosopher, statesman, and historian. The son of a Saxon clergyman, he had originally intended to pursue a career in the church, but after studying theology at the University of Leipzig his interests shifted to politics, law, and philosophy. In 1658 Pufendorf became a tutor to a minister to King Charles X of Sweden, and three years later he was granted a chair at the University of Heidelberg for the law of nature and nations, the first of its kind in the world. Two years after accepting an offer from the King of Sweden to teach at the University of Lund, Pufendorf published this book. Pufendorf was highly critical of those who abused power, whether they did so through the state or the church, and he proposed that international law should not be restricted to Christendom and instead respect the rights of all men. It was highly influential, not only in Germany, where it is said to have contributed to the Enlightenment during the eighteenth century, but throughout Europe and eventually in the United States. Pufendorf?s grounding of political concepts in natural law made him a person of interest to future American leaders such as Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton.? [- W&M Law Library]. In den WarenkorbESTC R19972; Wing S2156. Folio in fours, recent panelled calf period style, maroon morocco spine label, gilt lettering. Frontis portrait and folding map. One of the famous rambling, lengthy novels by Madeleine de Scudéry (1607-1701), a prominent, popular and prolific writer in 17th century France. She mastered the dialogue forma…t, as well as fiction, and left a large body of philosophical dialogues on the moral virtues of the aristocratic world. Many of those related subjects (sociability, marriage, honor, decency, politeness, friendship, love and gender) are woven into the dialogue in Célie, set in ancient Rome. One character reflects on marriage: "It is more difficult than you think to be all at once a good husband, a successful lover and an honourable man; for to be a lover, one must be a slave; to be a respectable husband, one must be master, and to be an honourable man one should be neither one's wife's tyrant nor her slave." The first part contains a famous folding map entitled Carte du Pays de Tendre - an allegorical map of love that charts the numerous obstacles one must overcome to achieve true love. Aphra Behn, a near-contemporary, was clearly influenced by Madeleine de Scudery, as was J. J. Rousseau decades later. Though her works are often scoffed at as being unreadable, she has recently attracted the interest of scholars in several fields: philosophy, early fiction - particularly by women - gender studies, etc. See the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy online for an excellent article on Scudéry. In this first English edition, parts 1-3 were translated by John Davies; parts 4-5 by George Havers. A few smudges and small paper repairs, but overall a fine, large copy. First complete translation in English of the five parts, preceded by their separate publications beginning in 1655.

It contained Morning Prayer, Evening Prayer, the Litany, and Holy Communion and also the occasional services in full: the orders for Baptism, Confirmation, Marriage, prayers to be said with the sick , and a funeral service. It also set out in full the propers : the collects and the epistle and gospel readings for the Sunday Communion Service. Old and New Testament readings for daily prayer were specified in tabular format as were the Psalms and canticles mostly biblical, that were provided to be said or sung between the readings. In den WarenkorbFirst edition. The philosopher Francis Hutcheson (1694-1746), a seminal figure in the Scottish enlightenment, wrote the present work with the aim to refute the arguments of John Clarke, who had contended that benevolence is the result of self-love. Hutcheson respected his adversary, indeed stating in the preface that Clarke's de…ductions "seem'd more ingenious than any which [he] ever yet saw in print", yet instead argued that benevolence was entirely separate from self-love, coming instead from a sense of public service. The essay, which underwent seven London and Dublin editions by 1769, proved an important influence on David Hume's Treatise of Human Nature. ESTC T61154; Jessop, p. 144; Kress 3756. Octavo (199 x 117 mm), pp. xxii, [2], 333, [3]. Contemporary sprinkled calf, spine ruled and with gilt motifs to spine compartments, red morocco label. Spine ends and joints neatly restored, title page lightly soiled, tiny trace of worming to first and last few leaves; a very good copy.

In den WarenkorbTenth edition, small 8vo, pp. [336]; some foxing, later half calf over marbled boards, red morocco label on spine; nice copy. Coles (?1640-1680) was the author of a number of "useful and necessary books for the instruction of beginners," among which were his popular A Dictionary English-Latin and Latin-English (London, 1677) whi…ch was still in use in schools even after the arrival of Ainsworth's Thesaurus in 1736; and An English Dictionary (London, 1676, et al.). "Still in the "hard words" tradition, Coles included thousands of "old words," obsolete from Chaucer's day. His dictionary contained twenty-five thousand words, eight thousand more than the last, augmented edition of Phillips. He shortened Phillips' already brief definitions in order to include more words and more etymological information. Coles did break new ground in including cant (thieves' argot) and dialectical terms. These, taken from other specialized dictionaries, had never before been included in a general English dictionary" (Landau, Dictionaries, p.43). Alston V, 72.
