Cloth, 8vo, xxvii, 312 pp. "-Declared to be 'the most puzzling book I have ever seen by its early twentieth-century discoverer Montague Rhodes James, the Egerton Genesis (London, British Library, MS Egerton 1894) has continued to perplex scholars who have noted both its highly unconventional religious iconography and its peculiar Anglo-Italianate style. The superb quality of its draftsmanship, the many disparities between images and inscriptions (found on about half its 149 scenes), and its incomplete state of execution only serve to tantalize further the modern-day reader. The authors of this book present the first comprehensive study of this Genesis Picture Book, including a facsimile; an examination of codicology, palaeography, style, and iconography; a consideration of possible patronage and of the imagery's relation to the theatre and to other aspects of fourteenth-century culture; and a transcription and translation of the text, in an appendix. The study engendered surprises, including much evidence of artistic links to Norwich, the identification of the artist as a Flemish immigrant, and the probable origin of the manuscript in the immediate aftermath of the Black Plague. The authors conclude that the Egerton Genesis, though unique in many ways, is nonetheless comprehensible as a product of its time, place, and circumstances of production. Richly illustrated with comparative material, much of which is largely unavailable in other published sources, this study should provoke not only a renewed interest in the Egerton Genesis, but also a re-examination of the wider question of the contributions made by Flemish artists to manuscript illumination in fourteenth-century England." Contents: 1 Introduction; 2 Description of the Manuscript, Textual Sources; 3 Iconography: Description of Miniatures and Commentary; 4 Parallels with Medieval Drama; 5 Style; 6 Origins, Identity, Early Work, and Career of the Artist; 7 General Conclusion: An Interpretation from the Evidence; Appendix Text: Transcription and Translation, Comments on Sources and; Relation Between Image and Text; Bibliography; Glossary; Index; Near Fine in a Very Good dustwrapper.

From the blurb: "The Middle Ages have long been famous for spectacular forgeries, Until recently, however, there has been little detailed consideration of the cultural significance of forged texts. In The Making of Medieval Forgeries, Alfred Hiatt examines for the first time the function of forged documents in late medieval politics and society. This book explores not simply why forgeries were produced, but also the often successful role they played in substantiating personal and institutional histories. In whose interests was it to forge documents? What kinds of narratives were enshrined in forgery? And why did forgery so often escape detection? The Making of Medieval Forgeries argues that medieval forgeries were not simply acts of deception, but attempts to invest historical narratives with the authority of written record. Hiatt examines in detail cases of forgeries produced by and for monasteries, universities, and the English government itself, and finds that forgeries show a sustained and often creative engagement with the past. Hiatt also charts the emergence of new approaches to the criticism of forgery, in the process challenging a number of long-held assumptions about the birth of modern critical thought. A close study of fifteenth-century criticism of the famous 'Donation of Constantine' reveals that the identification of forgeries was no less ideologically motivated than their perpetration. Indeed, medieval forgeries emerge from this study as a fascinating paradox: an illegitimate form of historical writing crucial to the expression of personal, institutional, and national identities, whose repudiation became central to the formation of modern discourses of authenticity and value." London : Toronto: The British Library ; University of Toronto Press, 1999, 421pp., .
