Buch Erstausgabe
Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. 'An exhibition of works, largely executed with dyes in pre-Spanish techniques, drawn from the collections of Senor Reynaldo Luza of Lima, Peru and others in the United States'. 36 unnumbered pages. 20 illustrations (photographs or paintings). The interior of this uncommon book is close to perfect, perhaps perfect. Which is saying a lot given that it is 43 years old. The pages are spotless, all of them. There's no writing, no names, not on any page. There are no markings, and as I said no soiling. The book is also perfectly bound, absolutely no issues in that regard. The white covers are not stained, though there is light handling soiling and a tiny scuff on the front, and on the back there are couple of surface marks (perhaps a sticker was removed). That's about it. Take a look at the photographs.

SUB-TITLE: Northwest Coast Indian Art from The American Museum of Natural History. CONTENTS: Foreword; An Introduction to the Art; The Formation of a Great Collection; Catalogue of the Exhibition; Bibliography; Appendix. PUBLISHER: The Center for Inter-American Relations New York and The American Federation of Arts New York; Distributed by the University of Washington Press Seattle The Center for Inter-American Relations conducts educational programs in the visual arts, music, literature and public affairs in order to enlarge our knowledge and appreciation of the cultural heritage as well as the political, economic and social problems of the Western Hemisphere. The American Federation of Arts is a national, non-profit, educational organization, founded in 1909, to broaden the knowledge and appreciation of the arts of the past and present. Its primary activities are the organization of exhibitions which travel throughout the United States and abroad, and the fostering of a better understanding among nations by the international exchange of art. EXCERPT: In fulfillment of its mandate to present to U.S. audiences art from all other nations of the Western Hemisphere, the Center for Inter-American Relations maintains a continuing interest in the traditional as well as in the contemporary art of Canada. For some years, therefore, we have followed with enthusiasm the resurgence of popularity in the U.S. of the spectacular objects made by Indians of the Northwest Coast of Canada and the United States, and wondered how we might make our own contribution to the furtherance of study and public knowledge in this field. The answer came serendipitously. Soon after Allen Wardwell became Director of the Asia House Gallery in New York City, a conversation with him included mention of Yakutat South, an exhibition of Northwest Coast objects that he had organized in 1964, during his previous role as Curator of Primitive Art at the Art Institute of Chicago. Asked whether there was sufficient Northwest Coast material still unknown to the general public to warrant a new exhibition, Mr. Wardwell replied affirmatively - and added that he would be glad to research the subject further as guest curator. Concurrently, the Center joined forces with The American Federation of Arts, which began inquiries around the national museum community to see what interest there might be in an exhibition that would be seen not only in New York but also elsewhere in the nation. Positive responses came quickly. Mr. Wardwell, meanwhile, concentrated his attention on the substantial collection at The American Museum of Natural History. Millions of visitors had over the years walked by the large Northwest Coast war canoe just inside the Museum's 77th Street entrance, and into the large permanent display in the adjacent hall. But few were aware of the quantity and quality of the additional material in the Museum's storerooms-a reserve that includes many magnificent pieces that have never been seen by the public, nor photographed for publication. A selection from this little known resource was completed and permission secured for the loan of 100 works . . . Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.
