First Edition. Fine cloth copy in an equally fine dw. Particularly and surprisingly well-preserved; tight, bright, clean and especially sharp-cornered. Literally as new and still in the publisher's protective shrink-wrap.; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 245 pages; Series: The Robert Lehman collection, 2. Physical description: x, 245 p. : ill. (some col.), ports. ; 29 cm. Summary: In this volume, forty-two remarkable paintings collected by Robert Lehman and his father, Philip Lehman, are discussed at length in light of recent technical and art historical research. Among the works catalogued here are Petrus Christus' "Goldsmith in His Shop" of 1449, which is justly famous as one of the first northern European paintings to depict everyday life, and Hans Memling's "Portrait of a Young Man" (ca. 1475-80), in which the sitter is posed before a landscape, a formula that had lasting repercussions in Italian as well as Northern art. Also included is Memling's "Annunciation", one of his finest and most original works. Well-known paintings by Simon Marmion, Jean Hey, Gerard David, Lucas Cranach the Elder and Younger, Hans Holbein, Gerard Terborch, Pieter de Hooch, Rembrandt, and El Greco all represent in their own way the best of the era and place in which they were created, as do masterful portraits by Francisco de Goya, George Romney, and Sir Henry Raeburn. All the paintings in the Robert Lehman Collection are reproduced in full color, supplemented by numerous comparative duotone illustrations. Subjects: Lehman, Robert, 1892-1969 -- Art collections -- Catalogs. 2 Kg.

Literally as new and still in the publisher's protective shrink-wrap.; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 245 pages; Physical desc. : xv, 240p. ; 250 illustrations (33 col. Plates) ; 29 cm. Subjects: Lehman, Robert, 1892-1969 - Art collections - Catalogs. Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York, N. Y) - Catalogs. Illumination of books and manuscripts - Italian, Northern European, European, Renaissance - Catalogs. Illustration ; Lettering & calligraphy ; History of art: c 500 CE to c 1400 ; History of art & design styles: c 1400 to c 1600 ; Bibliographies, catalogues, discographies. Summary: This book presents the exceptional group of illuminations in the "Robert Lehman Collection at The Metropolitan Museum of Art". The miniatures and cuttings from medieval and Renaissance manuscripts in this collection represent the major schools of illumination that flourished in Europe from the fourteenth to the sixteenth century. Robert Lehman (1892-1969), one of the great private art collectors of the twentieth century, collected these illuminations as an extension of his remarkable collection of early European paintings and drawings. Among the works catalogued here are a miniature by Simon Marmion - the 'prince d'enluminure' - painted for a Breviary for Charles the Bold and Margaret of York, and, among the Italian illuminations, a Last Judgment in an Initial C by the great Florentine painter Lorenzo Monaco and an Adoration of the Magi by Francesco Marmitta. A self-portrait by Simon Bening and a "Virgin and Child" by Francesco Morone are early examples of small paintings on parchment conceived as independent works of art rather than as illustrations for manuscripts. Also here are a leaf painted for the Hours of ftienne Chevalier by Jean Fouquet, the most celebrated French painter of the fifteenth century, and a miniature Holy Face by Gerard David that was possibly created as an independent devotional image. All the illuminations in the Robert Lehman Collection are reproduced in color, and copious comparative illustrations supplement the extensive catalogue entries. 2 Kg.

Autumn orange stamped cloth, 256 pp., BW illus., 38 BW plates, 7 color plates. "The subject of this volume is one class of Sasanian silver vessels, namely those with representations of the king. The aesthetic quality of these works of art and the nature of the imagery explain the great importance of the vessels for the study of Sasanian culture and history. . In this study the term 'central Sasanian' will be used to refer to those silver plates believed to have been manufactured during the period from A.D. 225 to 651 at the order or under the direction of the ruling members of the dynasty that controlled an area generally equivalent to that including present-day Iran, Iraq up to the Euphrates River, and parts of Armenia and Georgia in the Soviet Union." - Introduction.
