Zustand: Fine. First, Limited Edition. 4to, 11 x 8 5/8" (280 x 220mm); 44 pp. printed on Zerkall mould-made paper and set in Van Dijck type, with 19 wood engravings and 3 linocut borders printed from original blocks in sepia and three different tones of black. Casebound in light green paper with designs by the artist; gilt spine titling; scarlet end-papers. Blue cloth slipcase, incorporating label printed with "Four Seasons" engravings. Bound by The Fine Bindery, Wellingborough. Limited edition of 220 numbered copies of which this is no. 128, SIGNED by the AUTHOR. [McDowall & Campbell p. 22-25]. Thomas the Rhymer, also known as Thomas of Erceldoune, was a real person who lived in the 13th century. While wandering alone in the forest lands of Melrose Abbey, Roxburghshire, Thomas saw a beautiful lady riding on a palfrey. He took her to be the Queen of Heaven. She denies it and tells him she is from 'another country'. She is, rather, the Queen of the Fairies. There follows an otherworld journey which he related in a visionary poem that has come down to us in various ballad forms and also in several romance-prophecies dating from the fifteenth century. A later version of one of these is the text used here as we follow Thomas's request for love, their eventual love-making and many adventures before they have to part at the Eildon Tree - but not before the Lady has given him the gift of truth, after which he is known as True Thomas. This mysterious, compelling and exciting story still seems to have a hold on our psyches - the transforming powers of the hidden muse are very much alive. Apart from the glowingly mystical engravings that Angela Lemaire has made for this edition, her fascinating Afterword is seeded with an earlier set of engravings depicting the twelve months.

Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Pusch, Steffi (illustrator). Limited Edition. Number 5 of 100, folio size, [40] pp., signed by S.J. Butler and Steffi Pusch. "The Swimmer" first appeared in "The Warwick Review" and was then selected for "The Best British Short Stories 2011" published by Salt; this is its first publication together with Steffi Pusch's photographs. The story follows the girl who deals with fear, symbolized by her relationship with a swan she comes across in the river while swimming; the language is poetic and resonates at a deep level, as each of us has had to deal with similar feelings at some point in our lives. Steffi Pusch read the story and was inspired to take a sequence of photos to accompany it; the result is a wonderful work with the image and text flowing together like the symbolic waves and ripples of the river, both physical and emotional. ___DESCRIPTION: Original gray paper wrappers printed with brown and blue wave design and text in black, fore- and tail-edges uncut, brown endpapers, title-page printed in brown and green, ten black and white photographs tipped in printed using archival inks on FibaPrint photographic paper; Zapfino with Aries Italic types, Vélin Arches paper, folio size (13" by 9.75"), [40] unnumbered pp., limited edition, this number 5 of 100 copies, signed by the author and artist. ___CONDITION: A fine copy, with clean binding, straight corners without rubbing, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; like new. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please contact us for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Susan Adams (illustrator). 38x29cm, [48pp]. With eighteen full-page images in a mixed technique of black woodcuts printed directly from the blocks and red digitally-generated overlays printed from photopolymer line blocks. Copy 15 of 150 signed by John Lloyd Davies and Susan Adams, printed letterpress in Joanna type on a thick B F K Rives paper, bound in red paper-covered boards printed with woodcut images in black, title printed in black to the backstrip, top edge black, in a slipcase of grey paper over boards with black cloth edges, woodcut images printed in black to the sides. Bartok's one-act expressionist opera, with libretto by Bela Balazs, was premiered in 1918. It concerns the return of Bluebeard with his new wife Judith to his castle, and the horrors she encounters therein. These can of course be interpreted psychologically - as the Bard makes explicit in the spoken prologue: 'Is the theatre here, or in your heads?' Either way, the effect is chilling. The Old Stile Press and particularly the illustrator, Susan Adams, succeeded perfectly in capturing this in the form of a major folio Press book. The progression of related image elements from the slipcase, to the boards and through to the interior of the book is particularly noteworthy. The compelling images, most with at least an undercurrent of sadomasochism, perfectly complement the ghastly tale. A large-scale, serious and seriously disturbing book. Fine, in a Fine slipcase. Signed by Author(s).

Zustand: new. Designed and printed by Nicolas McDowall. Many woodcut images by Keith Bayliss were printed from the wood, including several printed in red on the cover of the book and two black images of medieval ships on the fabric covered slipcase. The layout of the book is unconventional, with the information normally on the title page zig-zagged across the front endpapers, and the rest of the information on the book likewise printed on the rear endpapers, but printed conventionally! The unconventional design as well as the exceptionally cut slipcase emphasize the symbolism of this tale of the thirteenth century Children's Crusade. Signed on the back free endpaper by the translator Malcolm Parr and the artist. Number 8 of 200 copies. Fine.

Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Limited Edition 20/100. In this volume created some five years after his death in 1994, the poems speak for themselves. So do the images. Each poem in this collection was selected by the artist who provided the image. The edition consists of 100 copies, numbered 1-100, this being number 20 which is signed by all twelve of the artists. Stiff wraps. Zustand: Fine. Kiggell, Ralph (illustrator). Limited Edition. Number VI of X of the Special Edition, folio size, [56] pp., signed by Ralph Kiggell, together with a suite of four signed prints. A selection of Chinese poems from "170 Chinese Poems" 1918, and "Chinese Poems" 1946, translated by Arthur David Waley (1889-1966). Waley performed the remarkable feat of teaching himself both classical Chinese and Japanese, and using those skills to translate the high points of literature from each culture for the English-reading public. He was the translator of "The Tale of Genji", as well as many other now well-known Chinese and Japanese pieces of literature, with many of his translations still in print today. He served as a sort of unofficial ambassador of the East to the West, and greatly admired their literature and art, although he never visited either country. The poems that artist Ralph Kiggell selected for this work move in chronological order, dating from the Han Dynasty to the Sung Dynasty. The poems chosen were those that inspired Kiggell, who specializes in woodblock prints. He studied traditional woodblock printing techniques at the atelier of the Yoshida family in Tokyo, and later in Kyoto with Akira Kurosaki, and also completed a Master's course in woodblock printmaking at Tama Art University with Fukita Fumiaki and Keisei Kobayashi. His work tends to find strength in collaboration; the subjects are often animals, plants, and landscapes, and he has illustrated other works for The Old Stile Press, most notably "The Third Thing" published in 2013. ___DESCRIPTION: Case-bound, stiff orange wraps with two two-colour woodblock prints of Chrysanthemums spanning the length of the covers, with rust lettering stamped to the backstrip, fore- and tail-edges uncut, aqua green endpapers, title page a double-spread illustration of a crane with a man walking in the distance in three colours, two- or three-colour woodblock prints (some two-page spreads) throughout; Elizabeth type, Velin Arches paper, folio size (13" by 11.5"), [56] unnumbered pp., limited edition, Special Edition number VI of X, signed by Ralph Kiggell. With a stiff portfolio covered with matching orange paper and lined with matching green paper which houses a suite of four prints that also appear in the book, however, using up to five colours in the separate print, each print signed, titled and numbered by the artist in pencil, each protected with a tissue wrap; all housed in a beige linen covered fall-down-back box, with an illustrated label to the upper cover, lined in brown suede. ___CONDITION: A fine copy; the covers clean, the corners straight and unrubbed, the binding tight with solid hinges, the interior clean and bright, and free of prior owner markings; clean, crisp, as new. The suite of prints and their portfolio also fine, clean and without wear; the box also fine, strong and sturdy, clean and entirely free of wear. Overall a stunning production, with the artwork perfectly complementing the delicate poetry. ___POSTAGE: Please note that due to the size and weight of this work additional postage may apply; we are happy to ship at cost to both domestic and international customers, please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Hardcover. Limited Edition. Limited Edition. Hardcover. "I adore the book, and [Clive's] illustrations are magnificent. The cover is my design take on your artwork in Sonnet 10.It shows our young man facing his muse, or possibly himself in a mirror (the glass in Sonnet 11)and it'sdone with leather inlays and gold tooling. On the inside I tried something new.I have taken the two lines: â He open'd it and taking off the cover He straight perceived himself to be my lover' which is so marvellous and punchy, and I suspect daring for the time. Because of the nature of the secret love (and the clever trick with the mirror) I have tooled the lines in reverse, the first line on the front doublure and the other on the back. However, because the binding has suede flyleaves, the impression of the gold tooling is set off in the soft suede, and the words become legible, albeit rather feint. It's a case of the structure serving the design." [Riley note to Hicks-Jenkins] "Barnfield was a 'gentleman at court,' an admirer and possible rival of Shakespeare. He was the only other male poet of his age other than Shakespeare to write love poems directed at a male muse, in this case the mysterious figure 'Ganymede.' My inspiration for the design, both the two figures on the cover and the letterforms on the inside, comes from Sonnet XI, (pictured) especially the punch delivered by the last two lines, which when I read them, knocked the breath out of me: He open'd it; and taking off the cover, He straight perceav'd himselfe to be my Lover. So the tooling on the doublures is in reverse but the words are offset on the suede where they become legible but faint, which seemed to me to be a perfect solution for expressing the metaphor of the mirror, which reveals the secret love." [artist statement] Writing of this binding, Hicks-Jenkins has said, "I've always enjoyed the point at which the work of one artist, writer or composer finishes, and a second picks up the baton. Picasso riffing magnificently on Velasquez' Las Meninas, and Philip Glass replacing the soundtrack of Jean Cocteau's 1946 film of La Belle et la Bête with an opera. I think that Dominic's binding for The Sonnets of Richard Barnfield is a spellbinding thing. Everything about is â right', and I congratulate him on the achievement. That suede flyleaf is fantastic!" Tight, bright, and unmarred. Limited edition number 197 of 200. Signed by artist. Mustard goatskin binding with navy and brown onlays, gold toolings, leather doublures and suede flyleaves. Teg.
