According to the Hoboken Historical Museum (Lipton is based in Hoboken, New Jersey) circa 1958-1960: "Booklet promoting Lipton's Onion Soup Mix used as California Dip in a wide variety of recipes. While Lipton introduced this product it in 1954, it appears that its use with sour cream to create a dip happened in 1955-56 by a California homemaker. Its adoption by cooks led to a surge in sales and the creation of this dip recipe booklet. Packaging is shown on the inside front cover and back cover".
