It follows him through the six major turning points of his brief life: his choice of Semitics as the focus of his scholarly study, his joining the newly reorganized Jewish Theological Seminary, and his triumphs and disappointments in the academic and public arenas. It attempts to unravel the mysteries surrounding his appointment during World War I to an abortive Red Cross Commission to Palestine, and the subsequent mission of mercy, which ended with his murder. Friedlaender was trained as a philologist, and taught Bible and Jewish history, but he achieved prominence as a transmitter of the thoughts of Ahad Ha'am and Dubnow to a new American audience. Almost alone among the European~trained academics of his generation, he also participated energetically in Jewish communal affairs in such diverse fields as Jewish education, Zionist politics, Conservative apologetics, and the Americanization of the new immigrants. It was this ardent devotion to his fellow Jews that led to his untimely death.

ill. OPappband. / Hardcover. Sprache: Englisch / This book champions the view that economics is a social science, and that, moreover, it may serve as a new paradigm for the social sciences. Economics is taken to be part of those sciences which deal with actual problems of society by providing insights, improving our understanding and suggesting solutions. I am aware that the way problems are addressed here has little in common with economics as it is generally understood today; most economists make strong efforts to imitate the exact sciences. Economics tends to become a branch of applied mathematics; the majority of all publications in professional journals and books are full of axioms, lemmas and proofs, and they are much concerned with purely formal deductions. Often, when the results are translated into verbal language, or when they are applied empirically, disappointingly little of interest remains. The book wants to show that another type of economics exists which is surprisingly little known. This type of economics has its own particular point of view. It centres on a concept of man, or a model of human behaviour, which differs from those normally used in other social sciences such as sociology, political science, law, or psychology. I do not, how ever, claim that economics is the only legitimate social science . (entwert. Angel, Rabbi of Congregation Shearith Israel~the historic Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue of New York City, founded in 1654~has been a leading voice in contemporary Orthodoxy. During the twenty~five years of his rabbinic service, he has addressed the basic issues confronting the Jewish community. Through his many books and articles, as well as through his numerous lectures throughout North America, he has impacted upon many thousands of thoughtful and thinking people. A major contribution of Rabbi Angel has been his ability to draw on the vast reservoir of the Sephardic tradition, bringing new insight into Jewish sources and broadening the range of discussion. Hayyim J. Angel, son of Rabbi and Mrs. Marc D. Angel, has edited this volume in honor of his father's twenty~fifth anniversary of service to Congregation Shearith Israel. He has put together this collection of representative essays and addresses, in the areas of Jewish thought, Jewish law, Sephardica and general contemporary issues. Among the topics discussed in this book are the boundaries of authority and dissent in Judaism; an alternative to Jewish pluralism; halakhic approach to conversions; religious Zionism; Sephardic culture. Essays in this volume deal with such issues as dealing with the death of a parent, the Orthodox relationship with non~Orthodox Jews, the demands of rabbinic leadership, the problems of inter~marriage, inter~group relationships. In his quarter century of rabbinic service, Rabbi Angel has been dedicated to seeking good and speaking peace. The essays and addresses in this volume reflect his commitment to a high~minded, intellectually vibrant Orthodoxy. Readers will find this work informative and genuinely challenging.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. 1st Edition. 1stUSedn; First printing of the American edition. 8vo maroon cloth bds, gilt spine titles, unread, Fine in a fine dust jacket. NF/nfdj: xix, 269pp. Notes, index. With two maps. Translated from the French by Arthur Goldhammer. "My task is piecing together a puzzle. I hope to reconstitute the existence of a person whose memory has been abolished. I want to re-create him, to give him a second chance. to become part of the memory of his century." With these words, Alain Corbin embarks on a journey that is part history and part metaphysics: recreating the life and world of a man about whom nothing is known except for his entries in the civil registries and historical knowledge about the times in which he lived. Risen from death and utter obscurity is Louis-Francois Pinagot, a forester and clog maker who lived during the heart of the nineteenth century;the age of Romanticism, of Hugo and Berlioz;from the Napoleonic Wars to the Third Republic. The result is a fascinating picture of the way people lived along the forest's edge during this tumultuous and eventful time in the history of France;and of the world. How did the residents of this unique community live and work together? How did life in the village differ from life in the forest? How did the church and various governments of France affect the everyday lives of these people, and of Pinagot in particular? With The Life of an Unknown, Alain Corbin presents a full record of a life, comprised of supposition, with room for each reader to insert his/her own imaginings onto the scene.Ambitious in its aims and exquisite in its execution, The Life of an Unknown is nothing short of a bold and successful attempt by a master to correct historians' all-too-common neglect of those relegated to oblivion with the passage of time.Alain Corbin is a professor at University of Paris I Panthéon Sorbonne. He is the leading figure among French historians who have concentrated on "ordinary people." Known for his originality and iconoclastic work, Corbin is the author of The Foul and the Fragrant, The Lure of the Sea, and, most recently, Village Bells: The Culture of the Senses in Nineteenth-Century French Countryside. He lives in Paris, France.
