From an obituary posted on-line: "Robert M. Smalley, 86, who served two years as ambassador to the Kingdom of Lesotho, died. From 1969 to 1972, he was special assistant to Commerce Secretary Maurice Stans. He worked on Ronald Reagan s presidential campaign in 1979 and 1980 and served as special assistant to Sen. Robert P. Griffin (R-Mich.). Outside the political arena, Mr. Smalley was director of corporate affairs for Pepco from 1973 to 1975. In 1981 and 1982, he was senior adviser and project manager for IBM in Armonk, N.Y. He returned to Washington in 1982 and became deputy assistant secretary of state for public affairs. He was ambassador to Lesotho from 1987 until his retirement in 1989. Robert Manning Smalley, who lived in Washington, was born in Los Angeles. He attended the University of California at Los Angeles and served in the Navy during and immediately after World War II.". …
