Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Written by The Friends of Caversham Court Gardens this guide covers the history of all the houses built on the riverside site, starting with a 12th century rectory. This was replaced by a Tudor house, and this in turn was remodelled in the Victorian era. The site was bought by Reading Borough Council in the 1930s and the last house was demolished in 1933. In 2004 with Heritage lottery funding the council was able to reconstruct the site, restoring the footprints of the houses and the buildings remaining on the site. The richly illustrated guide covers the history of the houses that stood on the site, the families who lived there and the development of the gardens through the ages. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. In the centre of Reading, stands a prominent stone obelisk supporting three bright lamps. It was built in 1804 at the expense of Edward Simeon, a director of the Bank of England, and designed by the great locally-born architect John Soane. It caused controversy and attracted criticism at first, and stood neglected and unlit in scruffy surroundings for many years, but after a full restoration it once again stands proudly and usefully in a worthy setting. Adam Sowans fifth local book traces the origins of the obelisk, the development of its design, and changes to its structure and surroundings over the last 200 years. It also chronicles Soanes other Reading projects some mooted, some built, some demolished and some mythical. The architects own drawings are complemented by newspaper photographs from the 19th and 20th centuries. "To Be Lighted Forever" presents history. Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. There's more to Reading than traffic, concrete and busy people. Wildlife flourishes amidst the urban hustle and with a couple of hundred open spaces, some ancient woodlands and two great rivers, Reading rewards the appreciative naturalist. Wander from town centre to suburbs exploring the parks and meadows, following the rivers and the wooded ridges, watching the seasons change. You'll be surprised at what you find. Over 25 years Adrian Lawson chronicled the wildlife he encountered in his days working in the parks, walking his dogs in the woods and riding his bike around the town. This book takes us through the calendar year with a selection of articles from his long-running newspaper column, Rural Reading, plus some new and previously unpublished pieces. Accompanied by perceptive and very personal illustrations from Geoff Sawers, equally devoted to the natural history of Reading, this exquisite collection will open your eyes to the wild side of town. Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. Close to Readings busy centre, off London Street, stands the Friends Meeting House and burial ground. Austere, grand and yet welcoming, it can be both a place of challenge and a place of rest. But a Meeting is the people itself, not the building, and through overlapping generations this keeps a continuity across 350 years. This book outlines the long and at times surprisingly turbulent and moving story of the Reading Quaker Meeting. Quakers in the UK are grouped into many local Meetings; this book outlines the history of Reading Meeting and its place within the town, and of the Meeting House itself. Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. Transitional Spaces is concerned with inner lives and the secret doings of damage and repair. Touching on politics, sickness, sex, art, global warming and the messages of fantasy and dream, it looks at the lost and the longed-for, and at what happens when the bonds between us rupture. Nature appears as mirror, pointer or consolation. Creativity is explored in lines that include poets, a painter, a pattern-cutter and tapestry-maker, but also in our instinctual methods of surviving trauma. Behrens does not attempt an answer, rather she maps the trackways of feeling.Never less than accomplished, never less than intriguing, the poems exhibit the kind of empirical and aesthetic care which distinguishes the best of the contemporary poetry written in the tradition thats taken William Carlos Williams infamous remark no ideas but in things as one of its key starting pointsThe High WindowBehrens here delivers an often shockingly good performance loaded with wild, unexpected insight and innovation in modes of thought and language Empty Mirror Transitional Spaces, Kate Behrenss fourth poetry collection, is concerned with inner lives and the secret doings of damage and repair. Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. The poems in Discoveries, written over the last four years, respond to the uncertainties of our time with an unpredictability of their own. Tim Dooley makes use of varied, sometimes arbitrary, structures to explore possibilities of expression. Some poems extemporise along lines of linguistic fantasy or celebrate innovators of modernism, while others observe contemporary experience with acuity. A sobering central section, structured in 100-word prose paragraphs, revisits a source of shame at the heart of our history.Dooley deals with whatever comes news, memories, encounters, dreams: nothing is out of bounds. Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. Cat Jeoffry is a self-contained passage from Christopher Smart's eccentric 18th century masterpiece Jubilate Agno (Rejoice in the Lamb) and the most famous piece of poetry ever written about a cat. Poignantly, Jeoffry was Smart's companion during his lengthy confinement for mental illness. His close and affectionate observations of the cat's antics both entertained him and inspired his moving religious celebration. Often anthologised, this passage brims over with the prankish playfulness and sudden ferocity of one of the literary world's most famous cats. Quirky, realistic, affectionate, it is at the same time a remarkable spiritual meditation. This new edition contains a commentary and notes by Tom Woodman. Peter Hay's characteristic black and white illustrations rampage through the book. A favourite poem for cat-lovers extracted from Christopher Smart's longer Jubilate Agno. Illustrated and with an afterword explaining some of the eighteenth century background. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. Turning Manet on his head, entering the thoughts of a post prandial lion, viewing and buying a snorting Hot Rod, imagining life on a modern-day Titanic, wondering what happens to the story after a book is finished or what a sonnet written by a modern day Shakespeare might look like, The Weather on the Moon ranges across art, music, philosophy, literature and poetry, politics, history, science and the natural world to encounter what its like to be alive. Bubbling away throughout this intense, sometimes humorous, sometimes quirky, always compassionate poetry is a joy in language, its possibilities, and music. As Graham Hardie writes, his work fuses many elements into one short space: pathos; wit; dexterous use of simile and metaphor; a heightened imagination; an ability to make poetry from the commonplace. The poems in The Weather on the Moon turn Manet on his head, enter the thoughts of a post prandial lion, view and buy a snorting Hot Rod, and imagine life on a modern-day Titanic. Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. Fairs Fair, Susan Uttings third full poetry collection has been described as joyous, heartbreaking, rammd with life. In these poems dead creatures (a stuffed bird, a taxidermists zebra) and people (a lovable, garrulous old man, a strange, moon-faced woman) come back to life. The graveyard dead join in the partying and after-hours drinking in the village pub; a lament becomes a celebration of life. Full of desires and ambitions some fulfilled, some thwarted, from learning to read to reaching the moon, from shape-shifting to living without mirrors poems are paired to speak to, or reflect each other. Themes and stories chain-react and echo throughout the book in Uttings trademark rich vocabulary, strong rhythms and distinctive patterns of sound. Fairs Fair continues to fulfil Adrian Mitchells description of Susan Uttings work: Her poems are musical, magical and have a clarity which goes straight to the heart. These poems are full of desires and ambitions - some fulfilled, some thwarted, from learning to read to reaching the moon, from shape-shifting to living without mirrors. This Thing of Blood & Love, Lesley Saunders fifth collection with Two Rivers Press, is an intense examination of human culpability, the secrets we half-keep from ourselves, the contradictory selves we inhabit, the histories that live on unreconciled in us, the planet whose imperfect stewards we are; and above all the unfathomable mystery of being (in) a body, incarnated, made flesh a thing of blood and love that betrays us with its appalling vulnerabilities. The poems in this book display the celebratory delight in language which has continued to impress readers and reviewers of Saunders work, though here imbued with a disturbed and disturbing awareness of mortality the ultimate vulnerability from which in the end we derive our deepest sense of self. In the title poem to Sicilian Elephants, his most wide-ranging and ambitious collection to date, David Cooke imagines the short-lived paradise achieved by those miniature elephants whose bones have been found on the island. In poems gathered here he explores notions of home and the way humans aspire to define their space and achieve a life of ease.Starting out from familiar domestic settings, he explores the rituals of DIY and gardening. However, the inevitable tensions between us and our environment and the ways that human achievement is subject to time are further explored in new and startling situations as when in a poem about heaven, the quest for a spiritual homeland is set against territorial conflict. Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. An Octopus who dreams of stars, a self-important fisherman who gets what's coming to him, and a misunderstood monster, Octopus Medicine is an invitation to adventure for the misfits, the lonely, the outsiders. These three verse stories call us down into another world--the world of the octopus--where days are dark, everything is out to eat you and nothing is really what it seems. Written for young and old alike, this is a collection to be read at bedtime, to be acted out on playgrounds, to be shared with grandparents. In its mysterious way, the octopus has much to teach us.'.Beccis poetry is beautiful, heartbreaking, delicate and powerful at the same time, if I could bottle it I would, it would be the most magical potion ever.' - Laurie Bolger 'This books gift is its ability to reflect us back at ourselves; in its carefully crafted poems we can see our insecurities and our beauties. Moreover, by inviting us to read it together or alone, or both, it celebrates those things that make us different and heals the divisions between us it is a truly remarkable debut.' Claire Dyer'These lyrical legends propel you into the depths of forgotten fantasies. They whirl you around your own imagination before spitting you out, soaked with stories worth sharing. With masterful poise Becci conjures the perfect mix of spellbinding images, epic narratives and violent verse. The result is electric. This book is for the bullies and the bullied. A must read for misfits. An oceanic adventure for the poetically inclined.' Sara Hirsch A debut collection from a wordsmith story-teller with an eye for analogy. Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. The very first book in the world to be illustrated with photographs was produced in Reading between 1844 and 1846. In 1843, William Henry Fox Talbot set up the first commercial studios to mass-produce photographs from negatives and he chose the Berkshire town of Reading as its location. The Reading Establishment, as it became known, marks a pivotal moment in the development of photography. Martin Andrews tells the story of these momentous events and places them in the context of the discovery and early history of photography. Told in a lively and engaging way, the story starts with a mystery. Who is the strange, foreign gentleman buying unusual substances in the chemist shops of Reading - is he a forger or a spy? An account of a significant development in the history of photography: the first commercial studio to mass-produce photographs, set up in Reading in 1843. Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. The language and structure of the poems allows readers to create their own interpretations of events and relationships. Never didactic and often leavened with wit, the poems occupy the liminal space between whats present and what lies beyond. Nevertheless, they are attentive in their range to such present-day realities as prostitution, prison and political deception. Forgiveness, they discover, may be found in time or place but we can only be certain that all is other in these uncertain times. The poems in Where Shadow Falls explore the frailties of the human condition, the landscapes in which such frailties emerge, and the dire consequences that can ensue. Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. A.F. Harrold's collection is a sequence detailing the illness and death of his mother, but its tone is anything but elegiac. Addressed to the patient, both present and absent, the poems are frank, unflinching and honest. There is love here, but also frustration, bewilderment, confusion and grief. Together the poems explore the spaces where despair, boredom and exhaustion meet, and at their heart describe the difficulty of dying. The book is addressed to the poet's mother, and follows her from illness to death and beyond. Without sentiment, or with little sentiment, or with a wary sentiment the poet tiptoes through the middle of difficult questions, faces his own weakness and in the end puts it all to one side, finally facing the facts of life and death as friends. Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. The poems in Handling, Jack Thackers debut gathering, display an extraordinary gift for describing the sights and sounds of farming life through an exact and tactile evocation of daily work, implements and activities. Childhood memories and seasonal tasks, such as planting vegetables, shearing sheep, and ploughing fields, are handled in a language that is at once strange, familiar, and as rhythmically measured as it is inventive. The descriptive poems in the books first part set the scene for the political and artistic perspectives in its second made up of pieces arising from time spent as poet-in-residence at the Museum of English Rural Life in Reading. In these poems, which centre stirringly on the agricultural organiser Joseph Arch, lived experience enters into an exchange with imagined pasts, as the museums objects and archives are vividly brought to life with this poets feeling for words. In the title poem of Jack Thackers Handling, the young speaker struggles to steer large and stubborn sheep. Watching his father, he realises that handling animals needs subtlety as well as strength. Both these qualities grace Jack Thackers poems not of surface glamour, but of depth and skill. They offer their readers rich rewards Alison BrackenburyOn a first reading Handling is a convincing and likeable book; it takes a while to appreciate fully the quiet brilliance of this brief masterpiece, but once you do, it stays Bernard ODonoghue First collection of poems by Jack Thacker winner of the 2016 Charles Causley International Poetry Competition.
