Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Graham Crowley (b. 1950) became a painter in the early 1970s out of conviction for the validity of painting, at a time when artists of the '1968 generation' were seeking to break the link with painting and its traditions. This book is the first to review the achievement of a highly regarded contemporary artist. In a deliberate reaction to British dependence on American models, Crowley looked initially to 'European Modernism', and the clamorous, bright, exciting, 'non-figurative' images he was making by the late 1970s were directly inspired by Leger. Quite quickly his visual language moved to the figurative, with the need to draw content into his images: with his conscious adoption of 'genre' painting, his subject became increasingly his own life and work experience. Following landscape paintings of housing estates focussed on urban decay, Crowley directed his attention to the genres of rural landscape and flower painting, the landscape of West Cork inspiring his most recent paintings since Crowley moved there in the mid-1990s. Martin Holman's engaging text surveys the artist's entire career to date and is accompanied by colour reproductions of key works. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Buch
Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. What can an art object tell us about its meaning today and at its execution? Can we 'read' artefacts to find out why they were made and for whom? What do they reveal about their context and how has their value changed over the years? Understanding Art Objects presents thirteen essays written by teachers and consultants at Sotheby's Institute addressing these exact questions. Each essay focuses on a single work, ranging from the 1st-century Jenkins Venus to Teresa Margolles' 127 Cuerpos, demonstrating Sotheby's theory of object-based learning in action. The contributors ask their readers to approach an artwork by looking at the work and identifying what is particular to it, and then assessing how it compares with other objects and what its condition tells us about its history. Only then is the discussion widened to consider the object's significance in an art-historical narrative. The texts are all written to appeal not just to the scholar, the professional and the connoisseur interested in evaluating art but to anyone curious as to what objects mean and represent. This collection of essays offers lively and insightful comments on a perpetually topical field, and as such is an invaluable learning resource. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. In just half a century of growth, the art fair industry has transformed the art market. Now, for the first time, art market journalist Melanie Gerlis tells the story of art fairs' rapid ascent and reflects on their uncertain future. From the first post-war European art fairs built on the imperial 19th-century model of the International Exhibitions, to the global art fairs of the 21st century and their new online manifestations, it's a tale of many twists and turns. The book brings to life the people, places and philosophies that enabled art fairs to take root, examines the pivotal market periods when they flourished, and maps where they might go in a much-changed world. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. The Arts and Crafts Movement of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries has had a lasting artistic and philosophical legacy, and continues to have wide aesthetic appeal. Many of its proponents were based in small rural communities in the Cotswolds, and one of the most important Arts and Crafts collections is held at Cheltenham Art Gallery and Museums in Gloucestershire. This new publication is the first to document the exceptional collection of Arts and Crafts furniture held in Cheltenham: from William Morris and his circle right up to present-day craft furniture makers such as Alan Peters. Each item of furniture in the collection is fully catalogued and illustrated alongside its catalogue entry. In addition, three chapters describe the general principles of the Arts and Crafts Movement with particular reference to furniture design, the growth of the movement in the Cotswolds, and the development of the Cheltenham collection. Superb black-and-white photography of the furniture has been specially commissioned for the book, and twelve colour illustrations highlight more intricate features of the objects. Many previously unpublished views of interiors are also included, along with other photographs from the Museum's archive which indicate the range of media represented in the collection. This is a vital source work for anyone interested in this fascinating period in British art and design. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Buch
Paperback. Zustand: Good. John Ruskin's masterpiece The Stones of Venice (1851-53) was one of the most influential books on art and architecture ever written and is still regarded as a classic work. However, the problems posed by its length (almost half a million words in three volumes) make it a challenge to read in its entirety. Sarah Quill has resolved this challenge by selecting Ruskin's descriptions of individual buildings and linking them to her own photographs of the same buildings, so creating a guide that fuses Ruskin's vision of the city with images of the present day. Covering a wide range of subjects - from palaces, churches and town houses, to bridges, courtyards and capitals - Quill's photographs illuminate Ruskin's words and record the fine architectural details described by him: intricate brickwork, coloured marble, carvings and sculpture. In addition, many of Ruskin's own drawings and watercolours are reproduced, along with 19th-century engravings, providing a visual comparison between the Venice he encountered in the 1850s and the city we see today. Also included are extracts from Ruskin's letters and introductory chapters that provide background on Ruskin in Venice and Venetian architecture. The result is a book that communicates the writer's passion for Venice and his concern for her architectural heritage. Uniting the historical with the present day, Ruskin's Venice: The Stones Revisited is a companion guide for both the seasoned and first-time traveller to Venice. The book has been read but remains in clean condition. All pages are intact and the cover is intact. Some minor wear to the spine.

Paperback. Zustand: Fine. The allusive paintings of Verne Dawson (b.1961) suggest an artist fascinated with storytelling. Seeking to contextualise Dawson's imagery, John Hutchinson's survey of the artist's work to date provides fascinating insight into a complex body of work. Dawson's idiosyncratic paintings defy contemporary art-world trends and eschew categorisation, revealing an artist attuned to ideas and values that stimulate an original artistic vision. Informed by a range of interests and influences, from fairy tales to 19th-century American landscape painting, Dawson's eerie and diverse canvases are intriguing and thought-provoking. Highly individual, Verne Dawson's visionary body of work will make an important addition to the Contemporary Painters Series and to contemporary-art libraries in general.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. While many publications have engaged with the events, artists and poets associated with war fought on land, the cultural history of the war at sea has been neglected. This original book redresses this imbalance by being the first study to focus on the art of war in the first half of the 20th century from a distinctly naval and maritime perspective. Drawing on the first-class collections of paintings, works on paper (including drawings, photography and posters) and archival material, such as private papers, journals and memoirs, held at the National Maritime Museum, London, the artistic response to the war at sea is analysed in the context of specific focus points such as the major arenas of naval conflict; life on board ships, aircraft carriers and submarines; the experiences of prisoners of war and the response of artists to the commemoration and legacy of key maritime events. Featuring the work of established and lesser known artists, this publication will make an invaluable contribution to war art scholarship while also presenting a little known aspect of a major museum collection. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. British sculptor Sophie Ryder is a versatile artist who makes wire and bronze sculptures, installations, wire drawings, collages and prints. Her lively, often humorous insights into human and animal behaviour have brought her international acclaim. Larger than life, her minotaurs, lady-hares and dogmen are the stuff of daydreams, yet retain a sense of humanity expressed through movement, gesture and physical contact. Jonathan Benington examines the inspiration behind the work, its unusual techniques and its public reception. First-hand insights into studio practice, interspersed with interview material and personal observations make for a straightforward account of the artist and her art. A similar insider's perspective informs the extensive series of photographs of the artist and her work in progress, taken by Harry Scott, the artist's husband. The result is a behind-the-scenes look at the creative processes of this successful artist. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. The transformation of museums from the 'dreary, dusty places' they used to be to places that people want to be in, alongside objects they want to be near and ideas they want to understand and then share has been extraordinary. During the last twenty-five years, millions of pounds have been poured into our national museums in the UK: as a result, they are certainly brighter and fuller. It is against this background that Dinah Casson has opened the service entrance of the museum a little. This book is not an explanation of what an exhibition designer does or how to do it. Instead, by means of a series of essays punctuated with comments from collaborators and visitors, it explores exhibition design and alerts the visitor's eye to this invisible craft. It explores questions such as: why are most paintings in carved, gilded frames, regardless of artist, period or subject matter? Why do so few contemporary art galleries have windows? If a label text irritates us, what should it say instead? Why do facsimiles make some people so uncomfortable? Why do we keep all this stuff? What is it that visitors want from our museums? In doing so, it offers enjoyable insights, which will add depth to our future visits through the front door (which is usually closed on Mondays) and will make us question what is shown, why it's shown where (and how) it is, what's written about it and how the interaction between museums and their designers has encouraged each to change. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

The Key contains translations of the English and Arabic exercises, and of the supplementary reading pieces in Arabic. Several generations of students have found the Key a most useful tool for their studies. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition.
