Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. First Edition. A copy that has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged. In this age of rapid transition, Asian American studies and American studie s in general are being reconfigured to reflect global migrations and the di verse populations of the United States. Asian American literature, in parti cular, has embodied the crisis of identity that is at the heart of larger a cademic and political debates surrounding diversity and the inclusion and e xclusion of immigrant and refugee groups. These issues underlie the very pr inciples on which literature, culture, and art are produced, preserved, tau ght, and critiqued. Words Matter is the first collection of interviews with 20th-century Asian American writers. The conversations that have been gathered hereâ??interviews with twenty writers possessing unique backgrounds, perspectives, thematic concerns, and artistic prioritiesâ??effectively dispel any easy categorizations of people of Asian descent. These writers comment on their own work and speak frankly about aesthetics, politics, and the challenges they have encountered in pursuing a writing career. They address, among other issues, the expectations attached to the label "Asian American," the burden of representation shouldered by ethnic artists, and the different demands of "mainstream" and ethnic audiences.

In the best Rabelaisian tradition, this brilliant satire weaves a tale of improbabilities around the seat of the last great taboo. Oilei Bomboki wakes one morning with an excruciating pain that sends him anxiously searching for a cure. Unsuccessful treatments at the hands of various healers and doctors, culminating in a bizarre operation, lead the desperate Oilei to seek the help of Babu Vivekanand--sage, yogi, and conman. Through Babu's teachings, Oilei learns to love and respect the source of his own complaint. By turns savage and absurdly comic, this brilliant satire allows Hau'ofa to comment on aspects of life in a small Pacific community perched precariously between traditional and modern ways.

Paperback. Zustand: Good. After fifteen printings, the Learn Japanese: College Text series has been s ubstantially revised. The incorporated revisions grew out of the authors' d ecade and more of classroom experience. Revisions were also made in accorda nce with recommendations proposed by instructors who have used the Learn Ja panese series. The new edition, which reflects recent trends in language te aching, continues to emphasize an integrated approach in which speaking, he aring, reading, and writing Japanese all contribute to the language learnin g process. - The most significant improvement is the addition of Culture Notes to help clarify the sociolinguistic context in which the language is used. Since J apanese modes of communication are highly situational, the student of Japan ese needs to be made aware of the different contexts in which speakers inte ract. Culture Notes, used in conjunction with Grammar Notes, Dialogs, and U seful Expressions, show how an understanding of cultural values and human r elationships can enhance the student's mastery of language skills. - A new approach to language learning is used throughout the revised editio n. The new sociolinguistic approach (which encourages the "generation of di scourse") is integrated with the original pattern approach (which encourage s the "generation of sentences"). - Many components of the first edition, such as Sentence Patterns, Grammar Notes, and Reviews, have been revised and/or rearranged. The result is a cl earer, more natural, and more functional presentation of the Japanese langu age. The four volumes of Learn Japanese: New College Text were prepared by the Asian Division of the University.

Hardcover. Zustand: Good/Very Good. What are we to make of contemporary newspapers in Japan speculating about t he possible connection between aquatic creatures and earthquakes? Of a city council deciding to issue evacuation advice based on observed animal behav ior? Why, between 1977 and 1993, did Japan's government spend taxpayer mone y to observe catfish in aquariums as part of its mandate to fund earthquake prediction research? All of these actions are direct legacies of the 1855 Ansei Edo earthquake, one of the major natural disasters of the period. In his investigation of the science, politics, and lore of seismic events in J apan, Gregory Smits examines this earthquake in a broad historical context. The Ansei Edo earthquake shook the shogun's capital during a year of special religious significance and at a time of particularly vigorous seismic activity. It was also a turning point because, according to the prevailing understanding of earthquakes at the time, it should never have happened. Many Japanese, therefore, became receptive to new ideas about the causes of earthquakes as well as to the notion that by observing some phenomenaâ??for example, the behavior of catfishâ??one might determine when an earthquake would strike. All subsequent major earthquakes in Japan resulted in claims, always made after the fact, that certain phenomena had been signs of the impending catastrophe. Indeed, earthquake prediction in Japan from 1855 to the present has largely consisted of amassing collections of alleged or possible precursor phenomena. In addition, the Ansei Edo earthquake served as a catalyst accelerating socio-political trends already underway. It revealed b.

Sense perception, which is of enormous importance in Western philosophical traditions, has scarcely attracted the notice of scholars of early China. A s a result of little direct comment on the senses in the Chinese philosophi cal classics, sinologists have generally interpreted their occasional refer ences to sense functions in familiar Western philosophical terms. This orig inal work challenges this tradition, arguing that despite the scarcity of d irect comment on the senses in these sources, it is possible to discern ear ly Chinese views of sensory functions from a close reading of the texts. Wo rking with metaphorical and structural analysis, the author reconstructs an understanding of sense perception that seems to have been taken for grante d by the early Chinese philosophers. By departing from traditional sinologi cal approaches, this method uncovers a detailed picture of certain shared u nderlying views of sense perception in the Lun Yu, the Mozi (including the Neo-Mohist Canons), the Xunzi, the Mencius, the Laozi, and the Zhuangzi. Based on its assembly of textual evidence, the book presents a conception of sense perception that diverges from the "five senses" model so prevalent in the modern world. It argues that in early Chinese texts the importance of hearing and seeing surpasses that of the other senses. These two modalities--aural and visual--are paired with one another and constitute the sensory foundation for trust and knowledge in the Chinese worldview. The work also dra.
