"The subject of this volume, the Tibetan (treasure revealer) Gshen-chen Kludga', is a crucial figure in the development of Bon as an organised religion after the eleventh century. Here for the first time he is situated in the context of what was happening in Buddhism during this period. By scruitining his life and gter-ma (treasures), that were to be of much controversy in later ages, the author sheds light on the mechanism of Tibetan polemical tradition and the ways in which sectarianism accords itself legitimacy by resurrecting ancient arguments in a subtly distorted manner.

"The Sherpa are Tibeto-Burman people from the Nepal Himalaya. They are best known for their mountaineering skills as guides and porters on Himalayan expeditions. The Himalayan heights also known as death zones are stressful and difficult environments. Despite these difficulties, Sherpa guides have managed to earn a reputation as reliable, loyal, and honest workers. The culture of the Sherpa people is recognized for its conservation ethics and sense of environmental responsibility. Although, the traditional homes of the Sherpa people are located at forbidding altitudes, they have managed to make these highlands relatively safe and prosperous places to live. These successful adaptations are not purely because of luck or hard work. There are Sherpa values, ethics, and way of thinking that have an influence. This illustrated book introduces the readers to the history, material culture, spirituality and environment that shape Sherpa culture. Although, this book is written from a Sherpa perspective to increase cultural appreciation among younger Sherpa, other members of the Tibeto-Burman communities across the Nepal Himalaya will find surprising similarities and differences that are equally interesting. It will also be of interest to other readers who are interested in the indigenous culture and traditions of the Himalaya.".

"The Mani Rimdu or ritual of consecrating pills with the Mani Mantra Om Mani Padme Hum was introduced in Khumbu in the nineteen twenties. Because of the elaborate dances performed at the conclusion of the ritual as a thanksgiving 'party' and a gift to the local population, the Mani Rimdu has become an important feature of Sherpa Religion and Culture. Due to the social changes taking place in Khumbu, however, there is a danger that in the future the Mani Rimdu rituals and dances could deviate from the original tradition established by the Dza Rongphu Lama Ngawang Tenzin Norbu. It is extremely important to record all details of the history, organization, rituals and dances of the Mani Rimdu festivals before they totally disappear. The Dumche festival, which is a religious and social gathering in remembrance of the first great Sherpa Lama Sangwa Dorje, has its origins in the seventeenth century. As with the Mani Rimdu, changes are creeping gradually into the festival. The present book Dancing in the Clouds contains accurate information about the history, organization, and rituals of the Mani Rimdu, Dumche, and Kyarog Tsogchen festivals, as well as a short history of the Thangme Gompa and its head Lamas. It will be of great benefit not only for westerners but also for the new generation of well educated Sherpas to learn the background and meaning of the celebrations they habitually attend.".

Paperback. Zustand: As New. New. Contents Foreword. Preface. 1. Tamang history social system and concept of space. 2. The Five Tamang ancestors and the sacred mountain Thulo Sailung. 3. Kalingchok and Thulo Sailung A Female and a Male Mountain in Tamang Tradition. 4. Tamang offering at the White Lake of Gosainkund Tsho Kar Choppa. Epilogue. Nepal is renowned for the snow capped Himalayas and their sacred status as the abode of the Gods. These sacred seats are considered inaccessible and remain forbidden to human beings. Despite this mountain image the largest part of Nepal consists of the lower densely populated regions known as the Middle Hills an area of intensively cultivated valleys and skillfully terraced hillsides. Here too in spaces long inhabited and cultivated by humans certain natural features peaks rock outcrops caves and lakes are considered sacred. The villagers see them as the seats of their divine protectors and as the custodians of their land. In contrast to the forbidden Himalayan peaks these sacred sites above all those on centrally located mountains and mountain lakes are the scenes of spectacular festivals with Shamanic Buddhist and Hindu cults. On the full moon nights of July August the rugged peak of Kalingchok the flat grassy mountaintop of Thulo Sailung and the shores of Icy Gosainkund Lake become the scenes of large popular festivals. On such occasions these sites vibrate to the sounds of Shaman drums and the night becomes a great feast for all. The present book is an anthropological study on the history and formation of these communal feasts and rituals on Sailung Kalingchok and Gosainkund. Not only are they the home of unique Himalayan Shamanic practices and Buddhist/Hindu rituals they also provide tangible evidence regarding the history of these regions that lie so near the Kathmandu Valley yet have barely been studied. These festivals and rituals too outline the complex interrelation between the Shamanic beliefs of a local Himalayan society and the powers of Buddhist Tibet and the Hindu Kingdom in the Kathmandu Valley. 204 pp.

The Practice Of Dzogchen In The Zhang-Zhung Tradition Of Tibet, containing translations from the Bonpo Dzogchen practice manual for the Zhang-zhung Nyan-gyud known as the Gyalwa Chaktri of Druchen Yungdrung and from the Odsal Dunkor The Seven fold Cycle of the Clear Light being the Dark Retreat practice from the same tradition translated with commentaries and notes by John Myrdhin Reynolds. The translations presented here all relate to the actual practice of Dzogchen according to the ancient Bon, pre-Buddhist tradition of Tibet known as the Zhang Zhung Nyangyud the Oral Transmission from Zhang Zhung. The country of Zhang Zhung was once a powerful kingdom that lay in what is now Western and Northern Tibet centering around the famous Mount Kailash. As a written tradition these teachings and practices are said to go back at least to the eighth century of our era coming from the great Bonpo master Tapihritsa and transmitted to his disciple Gyerpung Nangzher Lodpo. The master Tapihritsa gave his disciple permission to set down in writing these precepts of Dzogchen in the Zhang Zhung language for the first time. Then in the tenth century these same precepts were translated into the Tibetan language by Ponchen Tsanpo for the benefit of his Tibetan disciples. In the eleventh century, these precepts were collected from various sources in Western Tibet and in Nepal and put into their present form by Orgom Kundul and Yangton Sherab Gyaltsan. Thus, never having been concealed due to persecution this transmission represents a continuous and uninterrupted lineage from the early times until present. In the thirteenth century the illustrious Bonpo master Druchen Gyalwa Yungdrung composed a practice manual for this tradition. Book One deals with the preliminary practices of this Dzogchen system and the translation of this text was published earlier. Included in the present volume are the translations from Book Two that principally deal with the practices of contemplation and vision otherwise known as Trekchod and Thodgal as well as translations from Book Three of the four supplementary texts dealing with the view meditation conduct and fruit of Dzogchen. Also included in this volume is a translation of the instructions for making the 49 day dark retreat according to the Zhang Zhung tradition the text known as the Sevenfold Cycle of the Clear Light. These translations were done over a period of time under the guidance of Yongdzin Rinpoche Lopon Tenzin Namdak. While detailed explanations of the various practices must be had from a qualified lama belonging to this tradition this volume provides a useful overview of the practices on the path of Dzogchen for those who are sincerely interested in these matters.

Hardcover. Zustand: As New. Contents 1. Preface. 2. Foreword. 3. Introduction. 4. The 139 Mandalas of rGyud sde kun btus. Scholars of the Ngor Monastery belonging to the Sa skya School of Tibetan Buddhism started to compose a systematic work of theories and practices of Indian and Tibetan mandalas in 1870 and finished its publication by 1894. The title of this work is the rgyud sde kun btus (collection of the Tantras) which consists of thirty two volumes. The work was reprinted in India during 1971 and 1972. Probably shortly after the completion of the compilation of texts at the Ngor Monastery Tibetan artists began to draw mandala pictures according to the description given in those texts. Rev. Bsod nams rgya mtsho a former abbot of the Ngor Monastery told once that three sets of the mandala pictures of the rGyud sde kun btus were painted. One of the three sets was reprinted by Rev. bSod nams rgya mtsho from Kobansha in 1983. Dr. Lokesh Chandra published a set of line drawings of the Ngor Mandala Collection in 1967. The set of mandala collection used for the line drawings has been reproduced in this volume. This set seems to be the second set out of the three sets. As for the third set nothing clear is known. No one can deny that the Ngor Mandala Collection is one of the most authoritative Tibetan mandala collections. 134 pp.

Bibliography. Index. At last the theory of relativity for Buddhism. This scintillating work the second of a series titled Unveiling the Esoteric in Buddhism seriously challenges the thinking concerning many conventionally accepted ideas about the nature of the content of Buddhist scriptures. The opinions of what Buddhists believe concerning the great majority of their sutras and Tantras will change in the light of the many revelations presented in this series of works the central pillar of which are the syllogisms presented in The I Concept. Scholars will find that there are strata of thought in the literature they have not even conceived of as existing. This will allow them to better understand the nature of that which has always been considered ear whispered orally transmitted from the enlightened guru to the worthy student because as well as the secret doctrines relating to their particular ideological stream the context of the material differs from that which is normally (conventionally) accepted as correct. This ground breaking seminal work is set to become a milestone in the history of the evolution of the Buddha Dharma. It is intended as a panacea for those who perceive Buddhism to be in a period of malaise despite the vast number of new publications because of the lack of genuinely enlightened preceptors of the dharma that exist today. The information in The I concept will reveal why Buddhism lacks the enlightened that the present fallacies taught and accepted as dharma today actually prevents enlightenment from occurring. The dharma therefore needs rectifying for to present the truth of what actually is. Veridical ascertaining of truth is really what the Buddha Dharma ought to be about and such dharma will be positively ascertained by the readers of The I Concept and this series of works. 1162 pp.
