Buch Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very good. [4], xi, [3], 232, [6] pages. Includes Preface, Author's Note, and Foreword. Fed up with school, seventeen-year-old Dominic Fino joined the U.S. Army two days after graduating from high school on June 3, 1968. He found himself being routed from North Carolina to Alabama to Georgia, everywhere but Vietnam, which is where he really wanted to be. So when his request for transfer was denied, he took the unusual step of writing then-president Lyndon Johnson. His order to ship out to Vietnam followed shortly after. Once overseas, Dominic found himself assigned to the 335th Assault Helicopter Company, but it was not until he made the grade as one of the elite Falcons flying combat missions that Dominic at last realized his dream. The author's experiences cover the period from June 1968 through April 1970. The author decided to publish this story after helping to coordinate the first Falcon reunion in 1993, the first time the group had been together since leaving Vietnam, in an attempt to help others understand better what Vietnam was like for a gunship platoon. "A" Company of the 82nd Aviation Battalion (82nd Airborne Division) deployed to Vietnam in April 1965 in support of the 173rd Airborne Brigade. In September 1966, A Company was decommissioned and recommissioned as the 335th Aviation Company (months later redesignated the 335th Assault Helicopter Company). The 335th AHC was returned stateside and decommissioned in November 1971. An attack helicopter is an armed helicopter with the primary role of an attack aircraft, with the capability of engaging targets on the ground, such as enemy infantry and armored fighting vehicles. Due to their heavy armament they are sometimes called helicopter gunships. Weapons used on attack helicopters can include autocannons, machine guns, rockets, and guided anti-tank missiles such as the Hellfire. Many attack helicopters are also capable of carrying air-to-air missiles, though mostly for purposes of self-defense. Today's attack helicopter has two main roles: first, to provide direct and accurate close air support for ground troops, and second, the anti-tank role to destroy enemy armor concentrations. Attack helicopters are also used to supplement lighter helicopters in the armed scout role. In combat, an attack helicopter is projected to destroy around 17 times its own production cost before it is destroyed. In the mid-1960s, the U.S. Army concluded that a purpose-built attack helicopter with more speed and firepower than current armed helicopters was required in the face of increasingly intense ground fire (often using heavy machine guns and anti-tank rockets) from Viet Cong and NVA troops. Based on this realization, and with the growing involvement in Vietnam, the U.S. Army developed the requirements for a dedicated attack helicopter, the Advanced Aerial Fire Support System (AAFSS). The aircraft design selected for this program in 1965, was Lockheed's AH-56 Cheyenne. As the Army began its acquisition of a dedicated attack helicopter, it sought options to improve performance over the continued use of improvised interim aircraft (such as the UH-1B/C). In late 1965, a panel of high-level officers was selected to evaluate several prototype versions of armed and attack helicopters to determine which provided the most significant increase in capability to the UH-1B. The three highest-ranked aircraft, the Sikorsky S-61, Kaman H-2 "Tomahawk", and the Bell AH-1 Cobra, were selected to compete in flight trials conducted by the Army's Aviation Test Activity. Upon completion of the flight evaluations, the Test Activity recommended Bell's Huey Cobra to be an interim armed helicopter until the Cheyenne was fielded. On 13 April 1966, the U.S. Army awarded Bell Helicopter Company a production contract for 110 AH-1G Cobras.[9] The Cobra had a tandem cockpit seating arrangement (vs UH-1 side-by-side) to make the aircraft a smaller frontal target, increased armor protection, and greater speed. In 1967, the first.

Zustand: Good. xii, [2], 333, [5] pages. Illustrations. This memoir of Raymond Plank's methodical leadership in building Apache Corporation to a $500 billion global oil and gas company tells a more subtle and widely relevant story. His parents instilled essential values that have served as his lifelong compass. Invited to join his father's business, he chose instead to pursue an independent path. Apache sprang from Plank's successful accounting ad tax practice in the Twin Cities. When the 32 year old Plank uncovered fraud in an oil and gas investment, the investors so admired his integrity and diligence that they asked him not only to clean up the program but to expand it. With this mandate, in 1954 Apache was born. It grew by carefully studying opportunities in tax and corporate structuring as well as in geology. This book chronicles the innovations Plank brought into the growth of Apache Corporation and his fostering of lifelong learning. It demonstrates that Plank has made a very meaningful difference in the lives of others. Apache's success allowed Plank to found significant new philanthropies, including Fund for Teachers, which has awarded summer sabbaticals to more than 5,000 pre K-12 teachers who wanted a chance to enhance their skills, stimulate their minds, and bring excitement back into the classroom; Springboard, a landmark program that built 203 one-room schools to provide educational opportunities to under-served Egyptian girls; and Ucross Foundation, which has provided artist residences leading to five Pulitzer Prizes, three MacArthur "genius" grants, several Tony Awards, and many other honors. In the oil and gas industry, there are many exciting tales of wildcat discoveries. This memoir of Raymond Plank's methodical leadership in building Apache Corporation to a $50 billion global oil and gas company tells a more subtle and widely relevant story. Plank's parents instilled essential values that have served as his lifelong compass, his father urging him to "try to make a very small difference on behalf of others." Steeled as a bomber pilot in the Pacific, Plank graduated from Yale in 1946 and considered his business future. Invited to join his father's printing business, he chose instead to pursue an independent path. This book chronicles the innovations Plank brought to bear in the growth of Apache Corporation and his fostering of lifelong learning. It demonstrates that Raymond Plank has made a very meaningful difference in the lives of others. Trade paperback with folding flaps First Edition [Stated], First Printing [Stated].

Glossary of Navy and Marine Terms. Pencil erasure residue on fep. DJ flap creased. Lawrence O. Ealy was a lawyer, educator, and naval officer. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and also attended Temple University, the U.S. Navy Supply Corps School (at Harvard), and the U.S> Naval Aviation Supply School. He served in the navy in several capacities during his 30 year career. He specialized in naval logistics and supply. He also served as the Ernest J. King Professor at the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island. As the war in Europe steadily progressed, the author saw that the times demanded a sacrifice of all young Americans. He enrolled in the Harvard Navy Supply Corps School in June, 1941, and when he graduated he embarked on a naval career that took him, among other places, to Panama and the Solomon Islands. He also had the opportunity to meet some of the powerful people of that time, including Franklin Delano Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy, and his narration of those meetings is both insightful and amusing. President D. Roosevelt, Lt. Robert Montgomery, and Lt. John F. Kennedy all became friends of the author during World War 11. JFK and movie star Montgomery were shipmates of the author's when they all served n the Navy's PT boats. Offered is a signed first edition, first (and only) printing of "The Death of the Scharnhorst and other poems" by Arch Alfred McKillen and published in 1952 by Vantage Press, Inc. out of New York City. A hardcover containing 62 pages of verse with dust jacket, the title is listed in Ian Young's magnificent bibliography "The Homosexual in Literature" (1981) as having primary gay content (Young 2619*). Containing 62 poems, from the front flap, reading in short part: "War is not the only subject of Mr. McKillen's poems. He writes of love; and indignation prompts him to write strongly against racial prejudice. Too often a reader's enjoyment of poetry is marred by obscurity of meaning, but the clarity of thought and euphony of expression of the author, in this volume, leave no doubt in the reader's mind of his intentions." Poems include, with partial verse, "Apollo" ("Beautiful pagan, possess me! / Over thy body my fingers race / Hot on thy cheeks are my kisses / Naked with thee in a lovers' embrace"); "Echo Canyon" ("And now I stretch beside him / Where he lies upon the ground / And in all this lovely wilderness / We two alone are found"); "Fragment" ("He wandered through the darkened streets of night - Then down familiar avenues he strolled / And met, as he was sure to meet them there / The lads who knew these lanes where men were bold"); "Lonely Heart" ("Walking the streets, nights that are cold / Men who are wretched, men who are bold / Rooms in the shadows. Love me tonight / Love me and leave me before it grows bright"); "The Bugles Called" (reading in full: "We lay together, he and I / Upon a little hill / Beneath a tree that sheltered us / As trees so often will / I touched his hand and felt him stir / Expectancy of love! / And then my lips poured out my heart / The things I told him of / But when his heart began to speak / The bugles called to war / And he arose and left me there / I never saw him more"); several others. The poem "The Litany of Pearl Harbor" was published in the December 7, 1942 edition of the Chicago Sun. Signed and inscribed by the poet opposite the title page: "For Mr. McIntosh - this little 'Echo d'Houseman' with all good wishes - Arch Alfred McKillen - Chicago 6-24-57." Arch Alfred McKillen (1914-1984) enlisted in the United States Navy in 1939 and was stationed aboard the U.S.S. Tennessee at Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941, when the Japanese attacked. After the war he became a bookseller. This volume of poetry was reviewed in the March 1956 issue of ONE: The Homosexual Magazine but has largely fallen into obscurity.
