Sándor Márai (1900 1989) was a Hungarian writer, poet, and journalist. He settled in Krisztinaváros, Budapest, in 1928. In the 1930s, he gained prominence with a precise and clear realist style. He was the first person to write reviews of the work of Franz Kafka. This 1942 book (Hungarian title: A gyertyák csonkig égnek, meaning "The Candles Burn Down to the Stump") expresses a nostalgia for the bygone multi-ethnic, multicultural society of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, reminiscent of the works of Joseph Roth. It takes place in a castle at the foot of the Carpathian mountains in the 1930s. Two men, inseparable in their youth, meet for the first time in forty-one years. They have spent their lives waiting for this moment. Four decades earlier a murky, traumatic event - something to do with a betrayal, and a woman - led to their sudden separation. Now, as their lives draw to a close, the devastating truth about that moment will be revealed. Embers may be justifiably called Marai's masterpiece - an unforgettable story of passion, fidelity, truth and deception. First Edition Thus (2002), Twelfth Printing.

An iconoclastic study of the social, cultural, and sexual status of aging women in Western society draws on elements of myth, history, literature, and pop culture to explore the nature of the relationship between older women and younger men. The point that I found of particular interest was the author's discussion of the waxing and waning of women's social and economic status with changes in sex ratio (the number of women in porportion to the number of men) and the economic effect women's control of property had on the lives of men. Women gained when their numbers were few relative to the numbers of men, and women's control of property was restricted when it interfered with young men's abilities to make their marks in the world. There is a lot of information and valuable historical perspective. Banner offers good writing and good information with a balanced analysis. Banner chose a worthy subject, and she is a good writer. First Ed thus; First Printing indicated.

John Noble Wilford s account of paleontology in the 20th Century is a multi-faceted, well-written narrative. Wilford presents the early work and interests of archaeologists, their methods and their discoveries. Theories abound of the evolution and eventual demise of the large dinosaurs. This is an accurate tale of the knowledge and theories of this time period. Readable, as many such are not, well-illustrated, and full of wonderful tales and anecdotes, it is a pleasure to read and own. First Ed thus; First Printing indicated.
