Spike Milligan is buried in a little churchyard in a place called Winchelsea in East Sussex. I was visiting the church one day when I saw his gravestone. It was unexpected. It's in the most beautiful spot, just nestled beneath a large oak tree. When he died in 2002, he had left instructions that he wanted the following inscription on his headstone: 'I told you I was ill', and his family made a request to the Chichester Diocese to have the inscription put on his headstone, but they refused to allow the inscription that he wanted so his family refused to have a headstone put on the grave until they could reach some kind of compromise, so effectively, his grave was unmarked for two years until 2004. In 2004 the Chichester Diocese compromised and agreed that the inscription could go on but only if it was written in Gaelic.
