Vasovagal syncope ("the common faint") and near syncope from initial orthostatic hypotension are huge medical problems given the number of patients and their impact on quality of life. The treatment options are often unsatisfactory. The studies in this thesis set out to investigate the potential benefits of physical counter-manoeuvres in the acute management of vasovagal syncope and initial orthostatic hypotension. Once shown to be effective, further studies elucidated how they work.

How strong is the desire of lesbian mothers to have a child, and what are their motivations? How do lesbian mothers experience parenthood? What do they strive for in child rearing? How do they experience the relationship with their partner, and do they feel supported by others? What is the quality of the parent-child relationship in lesbian families? Do lesbian mothers feel rejected, and if so, does this have a negative impact on their role as a parent, and does it negatively influence child adjustment? All these questions are examined in 'Parenting in Planned Lesbian Families', this by studying 100 two-mother families and compare them with 100 heterosexual families. It is the largest study on planned lesbian families to date.

This thesis presents recent developments within the pure spinor formalism, which has simplified amplitude computations in perturbative string theory, especially when spacetime fermions are involved. Firstly the worldsheet action of both the minimal and the non-minimal pure spinor formalism is derived from first principles, i.e. from an action with two dimensional diffeomorphism and Weyl invariance. Secondly the decoupling of unphysical states in the minimal pure spinor formalism is proved.

By studying the motivation behind and nightlife choices of the young people who participate in ethno-party scenes, Boogaarts-de Bruin investigates how the changing urban population affects the supply side of the nightlife market using an analytical model she has developed and which she calls the model of structured choice. This approach is sensitive to the flexible use of the processes of agency and structure due to the systematic distinction that it makes between societal and personal factors. Accordingly, it is revealed that in order to analyze and adequately explain the nightlife experiences of and choices made by ethnic youngsters, an integrated model is required which centralizes the interaction between the structural strategies of the producers on the one hand and the personal preferences and agency of the consumers on the other. What is more, this book demonstrates that nightlife has changed because of the increasing ethnic diversity of the Dutch population. Finally, in the epilogue, the fieldwork results are discussed in light of the currently heated debate regarding the integration processes of ethnic minority young people (in nightlife).

However, little is known about the relationship between deprivation and emotional ties: What makes residents in deprived areas feel at home in their neighbourhood? In this PhD thesis Peter van der Graaf focused on the emotional ties of residents to their neighbourhood and researched how these ties are affected by urban renewal. He also compares practices between the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, where the emotions of residents are considered more in urban renewal.

To a much wider extent than is often claimed, the Allied bombings became part of German debates on the Second World War. In both the GDR as well as the Federal Republic before and after 1990 the air war became a topic of public and political interest as well as the subject of many historical accounts.Bas von Benda-Beckmann analyzes the German historiography of the Allied bombings since 1945. He explores how German historical accounts reflected debates on post-war German identity, and whether the history of the air war formed a "counter-narrative" against the idea that the Germans as a collective were guilty of the Nazi crimes.

In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: New. 1st. Throughout Europe regionalist movements claim more autonomy for their region, pointing at cultural and historical distinctiveness and the demands of their populations. In some places violence is used to put pressure on the state, and in many states in Europe and elsewhere the issue of regional minorities figures prominently on political agendas. Over the last few decades many states have introduced regional governments and parliaments, often as an answer to regionalist demands with a view of making regionalist movements redundant and satisfying most of their supporters. Others have warned that this was a step towards fragmentation and even the break-up of nation states.Regionalism after Regionalisation presents a response to this debate. Concentrating on three countries, Spain, France and the United Kingdom, and three regional case studies of Galicia, Brittany and Wales, this book offers an analysis of the development of political regionalism after regionalisation. It examines the ways in which regionalisation influences the institutionalisation of a region and the establishment of regional identities. It explains how the introduction of regional governments and elections alters the conditions in which claims for a regionalist project are put forward and in which ways it effects public demands for regional autonomy. This study analyses whether regionalisation is accepted as a sufficient answer to those demanding political and cultural autonomy, and how political actors from regionalist and mainstream political parties deal with new regional political institutions as opportunities to mobilise support.

It is about images from intellectuals, pastry cooks, urban planners and firemen. About people who deeply care about their cities, about their hopes, frustrations, anger and optimism. They describe their ideals in city debates to gain support, and try to eliminate those with different urban ideal images. They grouse, cuddle, quarrel, adore allies and blacken enemies. But are they successful? Do people change their urban ideal images because of these discussions? Does the local planning council change their plans because they conflict with ideals of citizens? The answers can be found in this book.
