In den WarenkorbIrish first edition (not stated but per OCLC citations). Collates as [fp], iii-xxx, 1-434, [rp]. Hardcover: H 20.75cm x L 12.75cm. Contemporary full leather; boards scuffed and stained with worn edges; large loss of rear board's surface leather exposing underlying cardstock; front board has small surface loss at its top left; so…me splitting at joints but boards remain reasonably firm; spine chipped at ends; spine with five raised bands with maroon title label in second compartment from head still retaining fairly bright gilt stamping. Missing ffep (and perhaps a ffly) and half-title which is pages i-ii - i.e. title leaf (pages iii-iv) is immediately opposite front pastedown; also missing rfep and perhaps a rfly; otherwise pagination matches a Dublin 1772 copy owned by Harvard. Toning to interior leaves with some creased corners; at center of title page is handwritten antiquarian ink authorship note "By Counsellor Dagg" (book was published anonymously but is firmly attributed to Henry Dagge) along with two two-line antiquarian ink inscriptions at top right - "Wil. Vans Murray | de Soc. Med. Temps.[?]" followed by pencil inscription "V.M Robertson | [illegible] 1834." Text block is firm. Book now presented in a trimmed clear Dura-Lar (polyester film) sheet forming a dj which aids the joints and modestly enhances the book's shelf appearance. This Dublin edition was published the same year as Thomas Cadell et al's London edition but presumably the latter has priority. OCLC locates eleven physical copies of the 1772 Dublin among member institutions although OCLC notably misses the Harvard copy (Dagge's 1774 second edition is more wildely held). Henry Dagge's CONSIDERATIONS ON CRIMINAL LAW is among the earliest works on the subject most notably preceded by William Eden's "Principles of Penal Law" in 1771 but, of course, both were preceded by the cornerstone of English legal analysis Sir William Blackstone's "Commentaries on the Laws of England" issued in four volumes between 1765-1769. Acquired from a modest collection of eighteenth and early nineteenth century legal and medical works from a Columbus, Mississippi estate which had familial roots to the Maryland Eastern Shore and the hamlet of Cambridge in Dorchester County. Attorney, politician, and diplomat William Vans Murray (1760-1803) served in the Maryland House of Delegates from 1788-1790 and the United States House of Representatives from 1791-1797 followed by an appointment as United States Ambassador to the Netherlands from 1797-1801. The secondary inscription is quite likely Murray's nephew William Vans Murray Robertson (1797-1836) who owned the circa 1760 mansion Glasgow near Cambridge's Choptank River waterfront.

Folding hand-colored engraved map (sheet: 17 9/16" x 33 9 1/6", 447mm x 853mm; neatline: 16 1/4" x 31 1/4", 413mm x 793mm). With some peripheral chips and repaired splits at the folds. The Hempfield Railroad is a type of railroad that is emblematic of mid-XIXc American railroading: the bridge line. Bridge lines were constructed across the country to connect two rival railroads (in this case, the massive Pennsylvania RR and smaller western lines in Ohio), which might refuse to connect their own lines with each other. Many of these lines were miniscule and are now long-abandoned, but the Hempfield Railroad's story is different. Unlike many other small railroads, which had issues recruiting talent in engineering, the Hempfield's chief engineer was Charles Ellet Jr. (1810-1862), a prolific civil engineer who later led the first federal survey of the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers. One of the marvels he constructed was the still-standing Wheeling Suspension Bridge in West Virginia, the western terminus of the Hempfield Railroad. While they were the first to open across the northern WV panhandle, they were not the only line: by 1871, they were a part of the much larger Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, and most of the line is now abandoned in favor of faster (and hillier) routes via Pittsburgh. The first pamphlet describes the railroad's route and why it should be built, the second is a transcript of the legal document allowing for construction of the line, and the third records a hearing with the finance committee of the Philadelphia City Council with the president of the line. The map (spanning Ontario in the north, Nashville in the south and the Mississippi River in the west) which is sometimes circulated with the first pamphlet, shows the Hempfield's relatively small footprint, but promises that "within the next three years, all those important lines of communication will be open for trade and travel," a promise that was largely fulfilled.Catalogued by Jonah Kramer.

In den WarenkorbLeather Bound. First Irish Edition. pp. [10], xiii, 508. 8vo., measuring 5" x 8". An attractive copy rebound in tasteful period-style, quarter, tan-leather over plain gray boards, gilt rules and lettering over maroon spine label; five blind-stamped rules, six compartments. Complete with both copper-engraved plates present, as ca…lled for in Sabine; the first depicting "The Falls of St. Anthony", and, the second, illustrating Indigenous weapons of war, and an Indigenous peace pipe. Lacking the map which has been neatly excised. Light edgewear, expected faint occasional foxing, circular mark to the upper-margin of pages 41-45 (entirely unaffecting legibilty of the text), otherwise, text-block remains overwhelmingly bright, clean, and unmarked with firm, sound binding. Originally published by Walter & Crowder, 1778., our offering is the Second Edition, and the First Irish Edition of this enormously popular work of travel and exploration, and which would see over thirty separate iterations printed in the ensuing years. Sabine 11184 (pp. 382); Howes C-215. Setting out from present-day Mackinaw City, Michigan in the spring of 1766 with the intention of discovering the long-sought North-West Passage, Carver's work is a most remarkable recounting of the author's expedition deep into the heart of North America, complete with vivid descriptions of the natural landscapes, the rivers and falls, and the myriad natural resources ripe for exploitation with references to rich deposits of metals, furs, and lumber; with a further exposition of the potential "probability of the Interior Parts of North America becoming commercial Colonies", and the "means by which this might be effected", a "Dissertation on the Discovery of the North-West Passage", and "The most certain way of attaining it". Indeed, it has also been posited that it is one of the first works, if not the first, to make reference to the Rocky Mountains. Moreover, it would serve as an indispensable, early, written account, of European contact with the Indigenous inhabitants of North America. Indeed, Carver's book would and does serve as a rich source of a European's observations of the numerous Indigenous groups he would encounter on his travels including vital anthropological accounts of their customs as recorded in: "Manners, Qualifications, of the Indians", "Peculiar Customs of the [Indigenous] women", "The Circumspect and Stoical Disposition of the Men", "The Liberality of the Indians, and their Opinion Respecting Money", "Their Method of Reckoning Time, etc., and the names by which they distinguish the Months", "Their Idea of the Use of Figures", "Of Their Government", "Their Division of Tribes", "The Chiefs of their Bands", "Of their Feasts", "Their Usual Foods", "Their Manner of Dressing and Eating their Victuals", and much, much else. A remarkable travelogue, indeed.

Binding tight and solid. Lord Chesterfield was an influential politician, diplomat and cabinet minister during the reigns of George I and II, and this book is a collection of letters of advice, counsel, and sometimes genuine wisdom, written by Chesterfield, over many years, to his son, Philip Stanhope, for whom Chesterfield had the highest hopes of success in the world. But ambitous men and women, actually working in the real world, will find so much here to consider and reflect upon, that it will take several close readings to absorb all that may apply to your career. That one's knowlege of the World must be learned by experience in the World, not in an ivory tower; that one's skills and virtues are of little practical value, unless carefully presented in a pleasing and artful Image; that multitasking destroys all hope of success; these are a few of the ideas which Chesterfield presents in elegant and polished prose. But Chesterfield's personal life, as it unfolds through his letters to its tragic and sorrowful conclusion, presents the most powerful lesson of all about ambition, life, and failure, for those readers who can read beyond what is merely written. EB; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 1179 pages.
