His ability to take a single object as the central theme of an image and balance the composition with minor subjects creates a feeling of syncopation, giving his photographs a contemporary dynamic." The weather report for the next few days doesn't bode well. A powerful blizzard is prophesied, with heavy snowfalls, gale-force winds and temperatures falling down to 15 degrees Celsius below zero. We were urgently advised that now was not the right time to leave for the craggy West Fjords of Iceland, for the thinly populated and nearly deserted area. Yet it's precisely these weather conditions that particularly appeal to me and I am already looking forward to this remote part of Iceland." (Hoflehner). Text in English and German. "Figurative minimalism effectively dominates Josef Hoflechner's photographs. How far this minimalism goes is illustrated hereby an image from the "Snowscapes" series. Unleashed, meaning uncoupled from narrative content and described object representations leaves the photographs open to a broad spectrum of approaches and interpretations. Nevertheless, the work does not fall into aimless ambiguity open to any interpretation, or topple into a flood of images that avoids a clear message with its overabundance. Rather, Josef Hoflehner successfully endeavors with figurative austereness and minimalism; he creates an aesthetic framework, in which the viewer's fantasy can unfold without forcing the images."
