Erstausgabe
Original Wraps. Zustand: Near Fine. First. This is an interesting book for would be writers and students of the memoir, afficionados of Canadian life in the 1940's and 1950's, Newfoundlanders who moved away, feminists, the list goes on. Helen Buss is a professor of English literature whose focus is on the memoir and this book is both her memoir and a sort of participant observation study of the memoirist and the issues that come up in the writing. Her perspective as a young girl observing the decision of Newfoundland to join the Dominion is in itself of strategic importance. Winner of the 1993 Gabriel Roy Prize and 2003 Laura Jamieson Prize awarded by the Canadian Research Institute for the Advancement of Women, Helen Buss (who also writes as Margaret Clarke when she has her fiction writer's hat on) has some interesting things to say. This copy is in near fine condition save price tag residue on the back cover and the tidy and tiny addition of pencilled brackets and some underlining of the text. As bibliophiles we disapprove of underlining, but the former owner has been so careful in her? handling of the book that it would almost appear unread, and therefore foregiveness comes quite easily!

Paperback. Zustand: Near Fine. Clean, tight, unmarked; absolute minimal wear; appears unread; First published in 1947, this book broke new ground with its fictional representation of women and of Indigenous people. Set during the dustbowl 1930s, this novel follows Lina Ashley, a homesteader who takes her family from southern Alberta to a new life in the Peace River region. Her daughter Poppy grows up in a community characterized by harmonious interactions between Metis and the European settlers. Stil, there is tension between mother and daughter when Poppy becomes involved with a Metis lover. This novel expands the patriachal canon of Canadian prairie fiction by depicting the agency of a successful female settler and, as noted by Dorothy Livesay, was "one of the first, if not the first Canadian novel wherein the plight of the Native Indian and the Metis is honestly and painfully recorded.".
