Zustand: As New. Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - How many times have you read a news story about someone being shot by the police while reaching for their waistband Or about an officer who testified at trial that the person he shot during a physical struggle had superhuman strength or a thousand-yard stare in his eyes And how many times have you watched a police chief or sheriff during a press conference invoke the '21-foot rule' to justify their officer's killing of a mentally ill person with a knife These and a host of other verbal devices are what author William Harmening calls the 'deadly force script.' It is a strategy that has been employed with great success by the law enforcement community in the decades following the landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision in Tennessee v. Garner (1985), the case that for the first time placed significant restrictions on a police officer's use of deadly force. It is a strategy that has gone relatively unnoticed by the general public, the media, elected prosecutors, and the judges and juries who must rule on the reasonableness of an officer's actions. Now, perhaps for the very first time, William Harmening pulls back the veil to expose the deadly force script for all to see. He does this in a unique and informative way by presenting actual case studies where the script was employed following a deadly police encounter, typically right under the unsuspecting noses of local media and the prosecutor tasked with deciding whether to criminally charge the officers involved. Anyone with an interest in the twin ideals of an equitable system of justice and a professional and bias-free police force will find William Harmening's presentation both fascinating and enlightening.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - In 1989, a young man named Kevin Hughes was murdered as he and another man walked to their car outside Evergreen Records on Music Row in the heart of Nashville's music district. As he lay dying in the street, a young aspiring singer named Aubrey Hill comforted him. Aubrey hill would soon be known to the world as Faith Hill and become an international superstar. Kevin Hughes was a chart manager for Cash Box Magazine, and it was rumored that he was about to go to the press about corruption and payola occurring at Cash Box. Entertainers and corrupt promoters were paying money for chart positions. Thirteen years after the murder, Tony D'Antonio, the man who hired Kevin Hughes, was convicted of his murder and sentenced to life in prison, where he died in 2014. But was he the actual murderer Was he paid for committing the crime by one of Nashville's most corrupt promoters Two weeks after the murder, a young man by the name of Garth Brooks released his first single. The book juxtaposes those two events, with the murder of Kevin Hughes representing the end of old Nashville, the somewhat seedy city with a music industry that suffered from greed, vice, and corruption; and the rise of Garth Brooks, which represented the new Nashville, the development of Lower Broadway, and the rise of corporate country music to become America's top genre of music. The book leaves open the possibility that the wrong man was convicted of the crime and provides a bit of a bombshell at the end about a particular piece of important evidence. …

Aaric is an experienced archer and swordsman, but unlike the other Viking youth, he lacks the desire to kill another living thing, even an animal. His father describes him as more poet than warrior, and because of this, he has been passed over to participate in the Rite of Acceptance, the annual ritual when young Viking boys are initiated as Viking warriors and thereafter allowed to participate in their raids and adventures. It is a troubling time for the people of the North, as clans invade and conquer each other for their lands and treasures. Aaric learns from an old sage living in the forest about the existence of a golden sword, once belonging to King Haldor, a famous and near mythical figure young Viking kids learn about in their sagas and bedtime stories. Legend has it that King Haldor disappeared while journeying alone to an island secluded among the floating ice to the north to defeat the last remaining dragon and the evil sorcerer who created him. The sage tells Aaric that whoever possesses the golden sword of Haldor, said to have been crafted in Valhalla, is the one true king of all the Viking clans. While pondering the existence of the golden sword, and how his father could unite the clans in peace if he possessed it, Aaric discovers Kira, a young Celtic girl living among the animals of the forest after escaping a cruel clan leader's attempt to enslave her and her family, all but her perishing when their boats crashed into the rocks while the others were chained to the hull. Aaric decides to steal a boat and attempt to sail to the secret island to retrieve the golden sword. Shortly after departing, he discovers Kira hiding in the boat, and the two of them continue on to the island. Once there, they quickly realize there is something different about the place. They meet a talking wolf; a flying bug man called a Mantuk; a giant tree man; and eventually a benevolent sorcerer named Namon who has lost his magic. The story is of their journey to retrieve the golden sword, which they discover is encased in solid crystal inside the volcanic lair of Valgaard, an evil sorcerer who endeavors to raise a new army of dragons from the black swamp, and with a dragon's fiery breath, free the golden sword from its crystal in order to possess it and its mythical power as he attempts to carry out his plan to conquer all the peoples of the world. The "Golden Sword" is the story of two kids struggling for acceptance in a world that has been harsh on both of them, and how adversity draws them closer and allows them to discover the courage and greatness that is in both of them. It is a story of friendship, of service to one another, and of accepting each other as we are and not how others want us to be.…
