8° (19 x 12.5 cm). 2 Bll. (half title and title), 12 SS. Typographisch grosszügiger, gepflegter und transparenter Schriftsatz in c. 7-Punkt Antiqua. OBrosch. Seiten unterschiedlich blass stockfleckig (generell wenig sichtbar und kaum störend) / pages differently with very pale foxings. Leichte Alters- und Gebrauchsspuren, Widmung d. Autors a. Vortitel u. montierte Grusskarte a. Vorsatz. Gesamthaft recht gutes Exemplar, Widmungsexemplar / Some light traces of age and use; Author?s dedication on half title dat. Christmas 1942, on front cover verso mounted card with the author?s address (printed) and four lines of good wishes (handwritten). Over all rather good copy. ?First published 1942? (title page verso). - Personal dedication on half title ?For Alice from Jan, Christmas 1942?; bluish card of handmade paper (watermark) with printed phone number and address ?Burcote Brook, Abingdon? and handwritten text in black ink: ?My dear Alice, Please let me wish you all happineß at this time + in the coming year. Always gratefully yours Jan? - The (uncommon) short name used here seems to be rather intimate and points on a friendly relationship. Indeed, ?Jan? was his nickname: ?Jan (as he was known to his wife)? (see : The War Artists: An Overview of Imperial War Museum, online). - Burcote Brook, Abingdon, was Masefield?s home address. - This booklet must have been sent to someone outside the poet?s own family: ?When Masefield was 23, he met his future wife, Constance de la Cherois Crommelin, who was 35 and of Huguenot decent. Educated in classics and English Literature, and a mathematics teacher, Constance was a good match for Masefield despite the difference in age. The couple had two children (Judith, born in 1904, and Lewis, in 1910). (from: poemhunter com, online). ? Als Empfängerin daher denkbar und einigermasssen plausibel wäre jedoch die schottische Dichterin Alice V. Stuart (1899-1983), zu welcher Korrespondenz-Archivalien von John Masefield bestehen (e.g. 15 letters from Masefield to Alice V. Stuart, in the years 1945-1961, held by: National Library of Scotland, Manuscript Collections). -- Masefield?s poem ?Land Workers? is described by Stephen Spender as ?perhaps the crown of his achievement? (zit. in: G. Plain, Literature of the 1940s: War, Postwar and ?Peace?, vol. 5, Edinburgh 2013, p. 32). -- ?Kingswod was the home of Heinemann?s Windmill Press. Opened in January 1928 it was located in rural surrey just outside Greater London and had a printing press, bindery, warehouse, offices and a staff of 150. Heinemann had evacuated to Kingswood after war was declared, leaving just a skeleton staff at its London office.? (J. Kloester, Georgette Heyer. London 2011, p. 198). Sprache: en.

[.] As represented by Mr. Masefield, Philip the Second of Spain, great in defeat, unafraid of ghosts though steeped in crime, is a figure that powerfully impresses the imagination: a bigger personality than we can usually conceive men?s personality to be, yet convincing. [.] Whoever feels the mystery of life-forces working beneath the surface will seek to produce not only a tragic terror, but a tragic uncanniness. And the ghosts which appear to Philip are not merely mouthpieces for thoughts that must be expressed; they are uncanny in somewhat the same way as is the voice which announces that Macbeth shall sleep no more.?
