Please feel free to inquire as to particulars and/or additional photographs. . The publisher' blurb notes: "Astern Business concerned with all shipyards in the U.K. other than those regularly constructing ships of less than 4/5,000 tons deadweight. It traces the effects of two depressions the 20s and 30s rearmament, wartime postwar boom, emergence of Japanese competition, labour unrest and falling productivity leading to mergers and Government intervention. Nationalisation is covered in some detail, followed by the near-extinction of merchant shipbuilding. The author's forty years experience in the shipbuilding industry was gained, unlike many of his contemporaries across four shipbuilding rivers in the U.K . This wide experience, together with his family background had enabled him to reflect upon the history of the industry with a wider perspective than would otherwise have been the case. The judgements which he arrived at and formulated in this books are the result of a combination of research and inside knowledge and his his opinion represent a balanced view of the industry". In exceptionally good condition.

Soft Cover. Zustand: Good. First Edition. Stapled paperback, 56 pages including many black-and-white photographs; amateurishly laminated, finger soiling to fore edge, scattered light soiling throughout, ink writing on three pages and back cover, ink signature/city/date of previous Portuguese-Canadian owner (a ship model maker and published ship historian, book acquired from his estate, and in his defence I must say that my guess is that he purchased this booklet "as is", as almost all of the many books I acquired are in far better condition). Paperback. Octavo, [20.5cm/8.5inches], paperbound with pictorial covers, pp. 79, indexed. Fully Illustrated with b-w halftones, &ct. Includes British Shipping Tables, Scrap & Build Fleet Lists, Shipping Loan Fleets Lists, The British Shipping (Assistance) Act, 1935 &1939. Please feel free to inquire as to particulars and/or additional photographs. . The British Shipping (Assistance) Act of 1935 aimed to subsidize the British shipping industry in the context of the economic depression of the 1930s. While one of its purposes was to safeguard seamen s jobs, it did so only for white British seamen, thus discriminating on the grounds of race. One of the requirements for payment of the subsidy was that the ship employed only British seamen . Thus, in the wake of the Act, many ship-owners sacked all but their white employees, and numerous Indian lascars found themselves suddenly without employment. This discriminatory Act was met with considerable resistance. The Colonial Seamen s Association, which brought South Asian seamen together with their black, Arab and Chinese counterparts, was formed in reaction to the Act, in order to better mobilize against it. They held numerous meetings in which the Act was denounced. In May 1935, Shapurji Saklatvala gave a speech decrying the Act at the Coloured National Mutual Social Club in South Shields. Opposition to the Act was also voiced in India where there were even threats of retaliation against white workers there. With protest against the Act coming from the India Office and Colonial Office as well as the CSA and other organizations, the discrimination was removed in March 1936. In exceptionally good condition.
