Paperback. Zustand: Good. 114 pages, illustrations (some colour); 28 cm. Published to accompany an exhibition at the National Gallery, London, November 5, 1997 to February 1, 1998. Good+. Marginalia on a few leaves. "Holbein's famous life-size double portrait The Ambassadors is one of the best known and most impressive of his surviving works. Yet the subject matter has always presented intriguing problems. Who precisely were the two ambassadors of the title? Why did they choose to be painted together -- with an array of globes, astronomical and musical instruments, books and other objects placed on shelves between them, a skull concealed in the foreground of the painting, and a crucifix partially hidden behind a curtain? The recent careful cleaning and restoration of The Ambassadors has enabled an art historian, conservator, and scientist at the National Gallery in London to collaborate on a thorough study of the making and meaning of this fascinating painting." - Publisher. CONTENTS: The French Embassy of 1533; Jean de Dinteville and the Chateau of Polisy; The Objects in the Painting; Death and Distortion: The Skull and the Crucifix; Holbein as a Painter and the Making of The Ambassadors; The Provenance of The Ambassadors; The Conservation of The Ambassadors; The Physical Structure of The Ambassadors; Fold-out illustration of The Ambassadors. Size: 4to.

Dust jacket, with light edgewear, protected in a mylar cover. "Christianity is another country, says John Drury, and we need to familiarize ourselves with it in order to understand the universal meaning of its art. In this beautifully written book, Drury, an Anglican priest and theologian, looks at religious paintings through the ages and presents them to us in a fresh way--as works filled with passion, stories, and meaning. They become the poetry of such eternal human concerns as birth, death, sacrifice, love, and moral goodness and failure. Drury points out the religious meanings in paintings that range from works by Piero della Francesca to those by Velazquez. In each case he views the whole picture--its composition, color, drawing, figures, and even architecture--and shows how it creates a religious image that addresses the spectator as a spiritual human being. Drury also provides a historical context for the works, comparing our perception with the perceptions of, for example, the medieval monarch or the Renaissance merchant who first commissioned the work. He examines how these pictures are able to speak to audiences across time and space, and in the process he allows us to respond to them at a more imaginative, empathetic level." - Publisher. Illustrated Card Cover. Zustand: Very Good. Numerous b/w Illustrations Some Full Page (illustrator). Creasing to cover. Stampred "SP" on ffep. 136 pages clean and tight. Rembrandt is an artist ho has excited exceptional interest since his own lifetime: the remarkable combination of his work, his complex personal relationships, his -financial dithculties and the relative lack of documentary evidence has generated a vast body, of scholarship. As a result, by the gri ddle of this century, innumerable paintings, drawings and etchings were. at, ributed to Rembrandt and a romantic mythology had-replaced the facts of his life. The Rembrandt Research Project, comprising the foremost Rembrandt scholars, based in Amsterdam, has undertaken the formidable task of establishing a body of works which can be securely .attributed to Rembrandt. This has resulted in the deattribution.of many works, once unquestioningly accepted as Rembrandts. Others are applying the same methods to the "attribution of drawings. New research on artists known to have studied in Rembrandt's workshop arrd the attribution of paintings. and drawings to these students has provided more information. This book serves as the catalogue of the exhibition., organised by curators . from the Berlin printroom. There is an essay on 'Rembrandt's development and technique as a graphic artist and the catalogue contains detailed study of forty outstanding etchings by Rembrandt. Size: 4to.

Illustrated cardboard cover in colour, 240 x 280mm., 408pp., profoundly illustrated in colour and b/w. . ISBN 0300050828. This book provides a survey of European painting between 1260 and 1510, in both northern and southern Europe, based largely on the National Gallery collection, and is at the same time a guide to the paintings in the Gallery. It is published to coincide with the opening of the Sainsbury Wing in which the Early Renaissance collection will be exhibited. The authors explain the background of religious belief and devotional practice for which many of the paintings were created, and the secular requirements and ambitions which influenced them. They discuss the social context in which art was created and then displayed in the street, the palace or the church; and consider the role of the patron and the dealer. They describe the artist's workshop, consider the role of apprentices and assistance, discuss the influence of guilds and courts and explore the reasons for the introduction of new subjects and techniques and also the survival of traditions. The book goes on to supply an account of the materials and techniques of the early Renaissance artist. Good condition. 2020 g.
