170, [4] pp.Extremely rare copy of the second edition of an already very rare work presenting the geography and anthropology of the foreign world in the form of a story told in 24 winter evenings by a father to his children. It is divided into 24 chapters, each describing the inhabitants of a specific region in Africa, the Americas, Australia, Asia and Europe, each with a hand-coloured illustration. The equally rare first edition published by Bieling in Nürnberg in 1810, contains the plates from Johann Sigmund Stoy, Bilder-Akademie für die Jugend (1784), while the illustrations in present anonymous edition are printed from new plates, implying a possible pirated edition. It treats the Khoikhoi, the inhabitants of Guinea, the Caribbean, Florida and Mexico, the Eskimos, the inhabitants of Greenland and Patagonia, the "Pescherans" from Tierra del Fuego, the inhabitants of New Zealand, the Australian aboriginies (called "New Hollanders"), the inhabitants of Java and Amboina & Makassar, the Moguls in India, the inhabitants of Bukhara and China, the Kalmyks, Mongols and Buryatians, the inhabitants of Tunguska and Kamchatka, the Ostyaks, the Samoyedic peoples and the Laplanders. Although published as a complete work by itself, it was so successful that Bieling published a companion volume covering different regions in 1811: Schilderung der Vornehmsten Völker. The title-page mentions the work is written by the author of Unterhaltende Erzählungen für das erste Kindesalter (1809), apparently the same anonymous author who also wrote Julius merkwürdige Abentheuer (1813-1817) and Das goldene Buch für Kinder (1811), all published by Bieling in Nürnberg. The boards show very minor signs of wear, the title-page shows traces of earlier endleaves, some very minor occasional spotting. Otherwise in very good condition. An extremely rare copy of an early 19th-century German children's book teaching geography and anthropology.l WorldCat 1082152367 (1 copy, Universität Frankfurt); cf. Beautifully illustrated 6-volume work on the customs, habits and costumes of the people in the Ottoman Empire. The work gives an elaborate account of Ottoman history, the emperors, people, religion, arts and professions, which are shown in the handcoloured detailed full-page engravings. The present work was written by Antoine-Laurent Castellan (1772-1838), a French painter, architect, and engraver. After having studied landscape painting under Pierre-Henri de Valenciennes (1750-1819), Castellan travelled through Turkey, Greece, Italy, and Switzerland. These travels inspired him to publish several series of letters concerning these regions, which he illustrated with views drawn and engraved by himself. In 1815, a German edition appeared in 3 8vo-volumes and an English edition was published in 1821 by Shoberl as the division Turkey in his series The world in miniature.Colas, Lipperheide, Hage Chahine as well as Atabey and Blackmer (73) all mention copies with only 72 plates as is called for on the title-page; our copy has 75 plates. Two of the extra plates can be found in volume 3 (one depicting "Capydjy-Bachy Chef des Concierges" and one depicting "Bostandjy-Bachy Intendant des Jardins") and the other can be found in volume 4 (depicing a man on a camel with a portable canon by its side). With the armorial book plate of Lord Northwick on the front pastedown of each volume. The corners of the bindings are very slightly rubbed, the frontispieces of volumes 2 and 3 are somewhat loosened, but still attached, with some occasional very slight foxing and browning, but overall internally fine and clean and with the colouring remaining bright. Overall in very good condition.l Atabey 204; Blackmer 300; Colas 545; Hage Chahine 820; Lipperheide 1427; not in Chadenat.

X, 294; [8], 415, [1 blank]; [8], 362, [42] pp.Very rare Amsterdam printing of the second improved and enlarged edition of this encyclopedic manual on all aspects of horticulture, including fruit- and kitchen-gardens, as well as the cultivation of medicinal plants and herbs by Johann Hermann Knoop (ca. 1700-1769). The various trees, plants and herbs are treated alphabetically, and at the end of the second part, devoted to the cultivation of flowers, a gardener's calendar is added. The third part, treating the medicinal plants, virtually present a popular pharmacopeia. The author, who was head gardener at the estate Marienburg near Leeuwarden, later reworked the first part, on fruit-trees, shrubs, and kitchen-gardens, into the famous coloured plates book "Pomologia, Fructologia", published in 4 volumes in the 1770s.The volumes have been re-backed with modern paper, the marbled paper sides are slightly rubbed. The first volume is very slightly browned, volume 2 shows some light water stains in the outer and bottom margins (not affecting the text), volume 3 is slightly browned throughout and shows some water stains in the margins (slightly affecting the text). VIII, 36; [4], 70, [2 blank]; [4], 87, [1 blank], [4], [2 blank] pp.Complete third Dutch edition, with the illustrations printed from the original plates, of three classic works of pomology (two illustrated), originally published in 1758 and 1763 as Pomologia, Fructologia and Dendrologia. They were also translated into French and German. The twenty plates illustrating ninety apples and pears were drawn by the author and engraved by Jan Caspar Philips (ca. 1700-1775) and Jacob Folkema (1692-1767). Those of branches of fruit and nut trees were no doubt drawn by the author as well but are unsigned. Knoop (1700-1769) was gardener to Princess Anne (mother of Willem V, Prince of Orange, and his regent from 1751 to her death in 1759) at her Marienburg estate near Leeuwarden. In this edition, the plates are printed on the outer part of whole sheets bound as folding leaves. This makes it easy to look at the plates while reading the text. With the manuscript owner's inscription of "J.C.J. Copijn" in black ink on the title-page of ad 1 below a small mounted slip with the printed name of "H. Kistemaker". The binding shows some signs of wear, the edges of the leaves are slightly frayed, the typographical leaves are slightly browned. [1], 16; [1], 16 engraved ll.Rare complete set of the first and only editions (excepting an abridged English edition of part 1, ca. 1760) of the only two Arelquin (Harlequin) print series by the Antwerp painter in The Hague, Gerard Joseph Xavery (1700-1747), one of the earliest original native Dutch examples the so-called Italian Commedia dell'arte, with texts in verse by Florentius H. J. van Halen (active ca. 1720-1739). We have located only 5 other copies with both parts and in 2 of those part 2 appears to be incomplete or defective. Both parts probably take inspiration from French sources in the Italian style, such as Gherardi, Le théâtre Italien (Paris, 1694) and the various theatrical performances known as "Théâtre de la foire", performed at annual fairs in France, but they are not simply translations and at least part 1 seems to form a complete original story. The most important character in both series is Harlequin, here depicted with his entire head black rather than just a mask around his eyes, which might have led an 18th-century reader to think of a Moor and a modern reader to think of a 19th-century black-face minstrel. In the first series Harlequin vomits, the doctor checks his pulse, examines his urine, gives him an enema and discovers he is pregnant! Harlequin then lays 6 eggs, brooding them in a nest, and babies hatch out. He raises the one that survives, cleaning his bottom, breast-feeding him and teaching him to walk and read, but Harlequin is lazy and impatient, beats the child and ignores the admonitions of the doctor, Piro (Pierrot) and Kolombine (Columbina). Scharmouchi (Scaramouche) also makes a brief appearance. The second series centres on foolish love, with women succumbing to the amorous advances of men who eventually abuse them, spend their money, get drunk or visit whores. The characters once again include Harlequin, Pierrot and Columbina but show a wider variety than the first series. With the first title-page slightly dirty, stains in the foot of 3 leaves and a few small marginal defects, but still in good condition, with large margins and with the colours fresh and bright. The binding is somewhat wrinkled and spotted, with some tiny tears at the fore-edge, but also still good.l R.L. Beautiful, vibrant watercolour painting of Southern Italian costumes. The work has been attributed to Luigi del Giudice (active 1777-1816), as the style and subject matter are identical to his other work. The painting depicts the colourful traditional Italian dress worn at a local festival and shows the various activities the participants engage in, including a traditional dance with castanets (likely the Tarantella), the sale of prints of the Madonna and child, and eating local delicacies. The inscription below the painting mentions Sicily, but the work probably depicts the Piedigrotta festival in Naples.Del Giudice was an Italian artist who was a student of painter Giacomo Cestaro (1718- ca. 1779) in Naples. He specalised in watercolours of costumes and festivals. The present work is part of a series of 5 paintings with similar scenes, which can be found in multiple museums in Naples. Del Giudice's work is a good example of the Romantic movement popular in Europe at the time. The paper has small scratch marks in the top border and small dust particles in all borders, without affecting the painted image. A few small parts of the frame have chipped off on the inner and outer edge, and tape on the back. Otherwise in very good condition.l Thieme/Becker 14, p. 204.

[17] ll.Remarkable notebook from the Rotterdam chamber of the Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie (VOC), with 6 leaves specifically coated for use with the included stylus, so the writing could be easily removed. These notebooks were commissioned by the chambers of Delft and Rotterdam in the mid to late 18th century as gifts for friends and relations of the directors. "As far as the eighteenth century is concerned there seem to have been only two kinds of books that were covered in sharkskin bindings: almanacs and Bibles. In the case of the almanacs, as far as we know these were always rather luxurious gifts from city or national governments, from the Regional Water Board or from a chamber of the VOC, Dutch East india Company. Most of the gifts seem to have been of a more or less official character; a few may have been gifts within the private sphere. Generally the books will have been given away as a New Year s gift (some of the VOC bindings did not contain almanacs but books of blank pages for taking notes), " (Storm van Leeuwen p. 1221). Although between 8 and 12 copies were made each year during this time, few have survived. The Rotterdam version appears to be the most rare, as we have not been able to trace another copy on the market.A few notes in the present notebook are legible and refer to business transactions "den 29 Novb. in den goudbeurs 29 Ducaten " or detail which psalms to read on the occasions of the confirmation and farewell of certain pastors (dated at the head of the page "1785"). Thus, the binding and notebook must have been manufactured and gifted before 1785. While the silverwork on the boards of the book is not visibly marked and thus cannot trace the exact manufacturer, we do know by whom the silverwork for these bindings was produced during the 1770s-80s from other sources. From 1777-1784 it was made by Johann Georg Holtzhey (1729-1808), a mint master from Amsterdam, and supplied to the company of silversmith Dirck van Hengel (active 1728-1776), who likely attached it to the book. The design of the silver is typical for the VOC, as similar designs were also used as printer's devices on VOC publications. With writing and (children's) drawings throughout. The leaves are bumped on the fore edge from the fastenings, the silk on the bottom of the back pocket has torn. Otherwise in good condition.l Landwehr, p. XXVII; Storm van Leeuwen vol. 109; 89 ll.Rare and little known to scholarship: a medical work by one of the greatest physicians in Muslim history, copied quite early. Abu Bakr Al-Razi (ca. 864-925) is known by the name of Rhazes in the Latin tradition; few if any can claim his scope of influence on medical thought in the Christian and Muslim worlds alike. While the manuscript of al-Razi s "Kitab al-Mansuri" ("The Book of Medicine for Al-Mansur") was translated into Latin by Gerard of Cremona around 1180 and disseminated to the West, the "Taqasim al- ilal", sometimes also known as "Taqsim wa al-Tashjir" ("Dividing and Diagramming"), remains almost unknown among al-Razi s prolific productions, the present example being one of very few surviving manuscripts. A critical edition was not published until 1992, by the University of Aleppo.Rather than following the traditional method of treating body parts in order in an anatomical "head to toe" approach, the "Taqasim al- ilal" details a series of case studies of each ailment in 31 themed chapters. Each chapter begins with the general and then narrows its focus for very careful and deliberate diagnosis. The first chapter, for example, is titled simply "On headaches," but gives an immediate distinction between a headache and migraine, after which symptomatology is further distinguished: there is a headache affecting the auricular region (suda ma a waj al-udhn), the eye (al- ayn), or a headache-causing cough (suda ma a al-su al).In the present manuscript, the "Taqasim" is followed by a copy of al-Razi s "Aqrabadin", itself the source of Masawaih s "Antidotarium". The final section of the treatise deals specifically with surgical procedures, such as the cauterization of wounds or the setting of dislocated or fractured bones. An highly important and very early copy from one of the great names in the history of science, and one which would benefit greatly from the scholarly attention it has lacked for centuries. In two volumes, originally bound as one, complete in spite of one loose quire. Some paper repair, generally marginal. Well preserved.l GAL I, 223, no. 9.4, 9.5; Taqasim al- ilal. Aleppo, Ma had al-Turat al- Ilmi al- Arabi, 1992.

[10], 193, [1] pp.First edition of this Dutch-Malay and Malay-Dutch dictionary, with linguistic commentary on the Malay language by editor Dr. Willem van Rees. It was one of the first guides to the Malay language available in the Netherlands. According to the preface, the work is meant for travellers, but it would also have been useful to merchants trading in the Dutch East-Indies, as it offers translations for many plants and spices. In the back, the work also contains a short grammar and a list with important sentences.Rees makes some references in his preface to Sumatra, Java, Timor, Borneo, Celebes and the Moluccas, also commenting on two 18th-century Malay language studies by preacher Lodewijk Dominicus (in Batavia 1751-1781) and theologian George Werndlij (ca. 1693-1744). The publisher Moelman has included a dedication to "Den Raad der Asiatische Bezittingen en Etablissementen van de Bataafsche Republiek" ("The Council of the Asiatic possessions of the Batavian Republic"). The present copy has very likey been used in the Dutch East Indies, as Deli, written on the recto of the first blank flyleaf, was a sultanate on Sumatra, which became independent from nearby sultanates in 1861 after Dutch intervention. With two owner's inscriptions in the same hand on the recto of the first blank flyleaf ("Deli" and "Bulaeus Brack") and one on the verso of the final free flyleaf ("Dalembang"). The corners of the boards are scuffed and the front joint has cracked, but the boards are still attached, with some loss of leather at the head of the spine. Complete set of the first edition of a charming miniature library, preserved in the original box. This educational set for children contains works on geography, Dutch history, classical mythology, natural history and the Bible, with all the plates and maps included. A French edition was published in the same year, but replaced the volume on Dutch history with a work on French history. Due to the charm of this miniature library, a facsimile edition was published in 1984. The present set, however, is the first edition, which is rare on the market and only available in a few libraries. Many miniature books were primarily written for children. As was usually the case with children's books published before the 20th century, miniature books were typically instructional or educational in nature. Although they have existed since at least the early 17th century, they were only specifically marketed towards children from the mid-18th century onwards. Children's books from the end of the 18th century were often influenced by the theories of Jean Jacques Rousseau (1712-1778), who thought that children should learn through play and at their own pace. According to Welsh, the present works show Rousseau's ideas because they present the information through short stories. The edges and corners of the box are somewhat scuffed and the gold trimming on the lid has come loose in some spots, with some loss of material. The paper wrappers of some of the volumes show some signs of wear. A few pages loose in ads 5, 8 and 9, but they are still included. Otherwise in very good condition.l Saalmink, p. 211; Welsh, A bibliography of miniature books 1247; cf. Bondy, p. 75 (French ed.); Welsh, The history of miniature books, p. 74 (2nd ed.).

[4], 60 pp. and 60 engraved plates.First edition, in Latin, of one of the most important works by the most famous female artist for natural history in the 17th and 18th centuries, showing Surinam insects coloured by a contemporary hand. Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717) was a German-Dutch painter of plants, flowers and insects. She was the first to systematically draw insects together with the plants they eat and she is also known for the fact that she was the first to depict the different stages of the metamorphosis of caterpillars into butterflies. The present work is a prime example of the first edition of Merian's famous and seminal work on Surinam insects - this first edition was published in 1705 as Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium in both a Dutch and a Latin edition. In 1699, she went to Surinam to study insects and butterflies, including caterpillars, but an illness forced her to return in 1701. The Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium, based on the notes and drawings she made there, contains beautifully executed full-page plates, showing insects and other animals together with the plants and flowers that they eat, which she studied during her stay in Surinam. It includes caterpillars and butterflies and their metamorphosis, worms, toads, lizards, snakes, spiders, shells and the metamorphosis of tadpoles into frogs. It is her most famous and in many ways most important work because she was the first to show the then unknown metamorphosis of butterflies and beetles from Surinam and because it also showed other animals besides insects and plants, such as iguanas and snakes.A copy of the first edition with the Latin text and all 60 engraved plates coloured by a contemporary hand is especially rare on the market, we have been able to trace it only twice at auction in the last 50 years. With 2 additional engravings mounted on the recto and verso of the title-page, respectively a clipping from Merian's Caterpillar book and a portrait of Merian. The binding shows signs of wear, mainly around the corners of the boards and the spine, the work has been re-backed, the boards are somewhat soiled and the design of the blind-tooled centre-piece has lost some clarity. Lightly foxed throughout and with a very small tear in the bottom margin of pp. 11-12 (not affecting the text). The engraved plates remain fine and clear, vibrantly hand-coloured by a contemporary hand. LXIII, 492, [2] pp.Copy of the rare second enlarged edition, revised by the author. The first edition which had appeared only a year earlier in 1728, only contains the plate with the signs on the foreheads of the Indians and is no less rare. The author, a Dominican wishes to defend the papal policy to forbid any adaptations of the Christian faith to local usage and practice advocated by many missionaries, especially the Jesuits. He takes under his protection the Cardinal Charles-Thomas Maillard de Tournon (1668-1710), who was the papal legate to India and China during the years 1703-1710. The pupose of his legation was to establish harmony among the missionaries, to report to the Hopy See on the general state of the missions and the labours of the missionaries, and, finally, to enforce the decision of the Holy Office against the further toleration of the so-called Chinese rites among the native Christians. These rites consisted chiefly in offering sacrifices to Confucius and the ancestors and in using Chinese names for heaven and God. Tournon arrived in India in 1703 where in 1704 he issued a decree forbidding the missionaries to permit the practice of the Malabar tites. In the same year he sailed for China. In 1707 he issued his famous decree in Nanking obliging the missionaries to abolish the local rites. Hereupon the emperor ordered Tournon to be imprisoned at Macao, where he died in prison in 1710, shortly after being informed that he had been created cardinal. Although published 18 years after the death of the Cardinal Tournon, the work was very actual. Just a year before, in 1727, Pope Benedict XIII had confirmed the decrees of 1704 and 1707, proving the the debate on these issues had not come to an end. This work is also very important for the history of the relations between Christianity and the Western world on one side and India and China on the other. Under the mask of a theological polemic a great amount of interesting and invaluable information is given on Indian and Chinese religions. With an owner's inscription on the verso of the front board ("Di me Luigi Vaggi .") and a small oval black stamp on the title-page. The title-page is somewhat soiled, some very slight foxing throughout. Otherwise in very good condition.

[36], 800; [8], 110; 115, [1]; 88 pp.First edition of the Ortus medicinae by Jean Baptiste Helmont (1577-1644), a Belgian mystic and a chemist following in the tradition of Paracelsus (1493-1541), the Swiss German who, next to philosopher, physician, botanist, astrologer and occultist, was seen as the founder of toxicology. With this work, published four years after his death by his son, Helmont establishes his name as one of the founders of biochemistry, and as a significant figure in the history of medicine. Due to the mystical elements in the book it was going against Church dogma, and was therefore published in the Protestant Netherlands, instead of in Catholic Southern Netherlands. It became his most successful work, and was issued with the second enlarged edition of Opuscula medica inaudita (first published in 1644). Both works are dealing with the treatment of disorders like leprosy, epilepsy and paralysis, of fevers, including stonefever, and the different Galenic humors. Included in the present copy is an account of the plague. Due to his works on digestion and gases Helmont was seen as the founder of pneumatic chemistry and became the most prominent chemist of the first half of the 17th century. [1], [1 blank], [6], 113, [1 blank] pp.First edition of a rare 18th-century catalogue of the library of Haarlem, the Netherlands. The present copy comes from the celebrated Haarlemiana collection of A. M. van den Broek (1932-1995). It lists all the books present in the library in 1716. The work also includes a poem by Salomon van Echten (1643-1728), which was written specifically for the Haarlem library in 1673 and hung there for many years. A second edition of the catalogue, titled Catalogus librorum bibliothecae Harleminae novus, was printed by Johannes Enschedé in 1768, but the first edition is more scarce. The city library, or librije, of Haarlem was established in 1596, when the Prince of Orange gifted the collections of former convent libraries to the city as compensation for the damage after the siege of Haarlem (1572-73). The city library was primarily accessible for scholars and had an especially large collection of theology works. In the 19th century, the collection grew exponentially from just a few hundred works to over 45.000, with a large focus on book and printing history. The old collection is currently part of het Noord-Hollands Archief. The librije itself has been renamed to bibliotheek Zuid-Kennemerland and is now a public library. The works in the catalogue are arranged by topic and further divided by size. The first chapter lists the works on theology in folio format, then quarto and octavo. The other topics are law, medicine, philosophy and other humanities, cosmo-, geo- and topography, works from classical antiquity, history, and even manuscript written on parchment. The catalogue is a unique source for Dutch 18th-century book history and the history of this library in particular. With a shelfmark label ("16") mounted on the head of the spine and annotations about the provenance from Mr. A. M. van den Broek (the previous owner) mounted on the front pastedown. The gold-tooling on the boards is very slightly rubbed. The edges of the endpapers have browned from the leather, the first few leaves are slightly dust-soiled and frayed and pp. 1-2 show a very small hole in the fore-edge margin of the leaf, all without affecting the text, the leaves are slightly warped from past humidity, mild foxing throughout. [1], [1 blank], 40; 40; 40; 40, [2 blank] pp.First and only edition of a very rare work with photographic illustrations of the Chinese Revolution of 1911, with captions in Chinese and English. It was published specifically for circulation in the West and consists of 14 parts. The present work contains the first 4. However, any volume in this series is exceptionally rare, as we have not been able to find another copy in sales records of the past 100 years. The Chinese Revolution of 1911 is an important event in Chinese history, as it resulted in the establishment of the Republic of China. The Revolution was preceded by decade of revolts, since Chinese citizens had already been dissatisfied with the rule of the Qing dynasty (1636-1912) for some time. The Revolution started in October 1911 with the Wuchang Uprising, after which similar revolts broke out across the country. The Qing court then initiated negotiations with the revolutionaries. Both parties came to the agreement that the emperor, who was just 6-years old, had to abdicate in February 1912. Revolutionary statesman Sun Yat-Sen (1866-1925) became the first provisional president. The present work offers an authentic pictorial record of the first revolts. The work contains numerous portraits of important leaders of the Revolution and members of the Qing court, grim photographic illustrations of the battlefields in Wuchang (now the Wuchang District of Wuhan) and Hankow (or Hankou), and images of the attack on Nanking (now Nanjing), including the preparations and the aftermath. The binding shows very slight signs of wear, the gutters of the front and back endpapers are weakened, causing the binding to be wobbly, but the boards are still attached. The tissue paper between the photographic illustrations has browned throughout. Otherwise in very good condition.l WorldCat 891342401 (2 copies).

X, 189, [1 blank], [1], [1 blank] pp.First and only edition of a rare work on Calcutta and Hinduism written by a Christian missionary. The author was particularly interested in the teachings of the Brahmo Samaj, an important monotheïstic reformist movement that started in Calcutta in 1828. Members of this movement and Christians regularly clashed, leading to heated debates. However, Reverend Cesary, who is otherwise unknown, tries to change misconceptions about the Brahmo Samaj and find common ground. The work is divided in 5 parts, which explain Hinduism and Brahmo doctrines, describe a journey from the author from Calcutta to Bombay, offer a charming description of 19th-century Calcutta and explain daily living of Hindus. Together, the different parts offer a fine portrayal of the late 19th-century socio-religious landscape of North India in general and Calcutta in particular. With the stamp of the Kapuzinerkloster Falkenburg on the first flyleaf. The edges and corners of the boards are slightly scuffed and the head and tail of the spine are bumped. The flyleaves are slightly foxed, all leaves are creased near the spine and the work is slightly browned throughout. Otherwise in good condition.

[1], [1 blank], [1], [1 blank], [25], [1 blank], [1], [1 blank] pp.Limited edition - no. 136 of 200 - of a remarkable mid-20th-century illustrative work by the renowned Dutch artist and illustrator of children's books Nelly Bodenheim. It was published as publication number 16 of "Stichting De Roos", based in Utrecht, as a literary publication for bibliophiles. Of the 200 copies, the majority was meant for members of that same foundation in Utrecht (175 copies) and the remaining 25 were meant for the "Quellinus" association, which supported the publication of this work. The present work consists of a rhymed story about "Aunt Beetle", written by Lizzy Ansignh, alongside 12 illustrations (and an illustrated front board and title-page) by Nelly Bodenheim. The work was lithographed by and hand-coloured under supervision of Jean-Paul Vroom in 1950, in facsimile after the handwriting (and draughtsmanship) of Ansignh and Bodenheim. It tells and illustrates the story about "Aunt Beetle's" birthday and all anthopomorphic animals coming to visit her, including a mosquito, bees, a maybeetle, flies, a dragonfly, ants, caterpillars, and other beetles. The boards are very slightly toned and slightly bumped around the corners and the head and foot of the spine, internally fine and clean. Overall in very good condition. Ad 2 shows some very small spots in the margins, otherwise in very good condition.l WorldCat 899042306, 54290625 (19 copies).

26 pp. and [5] lithographed leaves and 32 lithographs on 25 plates.First edition of this set of thirty-two magnificent views of China after drawings by the notable French artist Auguste Borget (1808-77), a close friend of Honoré de Balzac. Borget travelled through Asia from 1838 to 1840; his perceptive sketches include views in the area of Hong Kong (4), Macao (13), and Canton (12). "The feeling of superiority to the Chinese, so characteristic of accounts from the 1840s, is absent here. The artist observes with a fresh eye" (Lust). Explanations to all views are found in the letterpress text in the form of letters by Borget. A second edition in English was published in the same year under the title "Sketches of China and the Chinese".Some foxing, as common, especially to text leaves, due to paper stock. [37] ll. including title-leaf and 7 blanks, plus 16 loosely inserted ll.An album of drawings (and squeezes of bas reliefs) made by William Robertson on a journey from Cairo in December 1838 down the Nile into Nubia, reaching as far south as the present-day Egyptian-Sudanese border region, including the temples of Abu Simbel, in January 1839, then returning via Philae, Karnak and other sites to Thebes in February 1839. They give very detailed views of numerous buildings, sculptures, bas-reliefs and hieroglyphic inscriptions, as well as more distant views of landscapes with buildings and three botanical drawings. Since many of the ancient Egyptian sites have been looted and damaged over the years, these early drawings and squeezes provide an important record of what was there in 1838/39 and how it was situated, before the first photographs were made. While Robertson made most of his drawings on site, he drew the Temple at Luxor after a drawing by Achille Émile Prisse d'Avennes (1807-1879) who began exploring and drawing the ancient Egyptian sites in 1836 and published many of his drawings in 1847.A few of the original album leaves are now detached and may have been removed by the artist himself. One inserted drawing is severely foxed and one inserted floor plan is rather dirty, but in general the drawings are in very good condition.

[24] pp.Rare remarkable "pocket" London almanack; an entirely engraved miniature publication for the year 1788. The almanac contains an explanation of its use on the title-page, four full-page portraits of the King of Prussia, the Prince of Orange, the Duke of Brunswick, and the Duke of York, common notes (including the dominical letters, golden number, and religious festive days) for 1788 beneath a half-page view of St. Paul's Cathedral, a calendar, an overview of all British Kings and Queens and the dates of their reign, a list of mayors and sheriffs (1767-1788), one page listing bank holidays, and an overview of the Royal family (King George III and Queen Charlotte and their children) can be found on the final page. The long series of the London Almanack is, according to Bondy, of special interest for the beautiful bindings which were issued or commissioned by the publishers themselves. The binding shows signs of wear, with some minor loss of material around the foot of the spine and a small worm hole in the fore edge of the back board. [4], 3, [1 blank] pp.First and only edition of one of the rarest books on Japanese flora. The author Engelbert Kaempfer (1651 - 1716) was a professor from Lemgo, Germany, who joined the Dutch East India Company (VOC) as a medical doctor in 1685. After periods in what are now India and Indonesia he travelled in 1690 to Japan to work as a doctor on Dejima (Deshima), the Dutch trading post or factory in Nagasaki. Sir Hans Sloan acquired his manuscripts, alsong with his drawings and herbarium, and arranged for their translation and publication, the first to appear in translation was The history of Japan in 1727. This English translation established Kaempfer's reputation as the 18th-century authority on Japan and deeply influenced Japan's image in Europe. The renowned botanist and companion of the 1768 Cook expedition Sir Joseph Banks (1743-1820) was responsible for the editing and publication of the present work and dedicated it to the curators of the Library. In most cases no plates had previously been made from these drawings, so they remained unpublished. In the last years of his life Kaempfer himself had published only a small number of his drawings in his Amoenitatum exoticarum, printed in Lemgo in 1712. Thus the present publication introduces many Japanese plants for the first time to a large audience in the West. Kaempfer's herbrarium is now in the Natural History Museum, South Kensington.Royal Library duplicate stamp in the foot of title page. Contemporary handcoloured lithographed(?) plate with the plan for the Bombardment of Algiers in August 1816. The attack was instigated and won by Great Britain and the Netherlands, which was celebrated in London. The Bombardment of Algiers was part of a European campaign to end piracy against Europeans by North African countries. The goal of this attack was to free Christian slaves in Algeria and stop Omar Agha (?-1817), the of Dey of Algiers, from enslaving more Europeans. The attack was partly successful. Algeria freed around 3000 Christian slaves after the battle, but did not stop enslaving Europeans until later in the 19th century. The plan for the attack was made by Admiral Lord Exmouth, the commander of the fleet. The largest ships approached the harbour in a column, sailed to the zone were the Algerian guns could not reach them, and bombarded the defences. Other ships blocked the harbour, to attack the Algerian ships and prevent them from joining the battle. On the present illustration, each of the British ships is named and drawn in its planned position, thus giving an interesting visual insight into 19th-century naval tactics. The sheet is folded in half, with a tear along the top and bottom of the fold, somewhat browned and stained, with remnants of tape on the back. The plan and view remain clear and the colouring remains bright.

[1], [1 blank], [2], 645; 407; [1], [1 blank], [1], [1 blank], 352 pp.Rare edition of one of the best Arabic translations of the Bible. This work is based on the 1671 version from Rome, which was the first printed edition of the complete Bible in Arabic. However, the version from 1671 was not vocalised (written with vowel points), but the present edition from London is.The Arabic translation of the Bible from 1671 was done under the direction of Sergius Risi (d. 1638), the archbischop of Damascus. It had been requested by the Archbischop of Aleppo and other important figures from the Eastern Church, as manuscript copies had become rare and were often found to be incorrect. Risi and his team compared the Arabic manuscripts of the Bible they had access to with Hebrew and Latin versions and then composed their own translation. They first completed the Arabic Pentateuch. The Old and New Testament followed in 1647 and 1650 respectively, after Risi's passing. These translations were revised and then finally published in 1671. It was the only Arabic translation of the complete Bible until 1811. Numerous new translations were made in 19th century. The present Catholic edition of the Arabic Bible translation existed alongside the 1860 Protestant translation by Cornelius van Alen van Dyck.According to the title-page, this edition of the Old Testament was printed in 1855. However, none of the relevant reference works mention an 1855 edition. Since the title-page of the New Testament bears the year 1857, it is possible that the Old Testament was also printed in that year and the date on the title-page is a printing mistake. The 1857 edition is also fairly rare on the market, as we have only been able to find it in 1 sales record of the past 100 years. With the label of Watkins' bookbinding factory mounted on the front pastedown and a purple, Spanish stamp from the library of someone with a law degree on the final leaf. The edges and corners of the boards are somewhat scuffed, the binding is rubbed, with some loss of material on the spine. [20], [5], 299, [1] ll. (including blank leaves 259-261).First edition of the most splendidly illustrated incunable ever: an important document of early German book design that recounts the story of the world from creation to the 15th century. The present Latin edition was published half a year before the German one and is printed on superior paper."The Schedel Chronicle very rightly became famous because of its illustrations, its extraordinary graphic design, its printing, and for its woodcuts and descriptions of cities. The Nuremberg Chronicle remains one of the great works in graphic art of the fifteenth century" (A. Wilson, The Making of the Nuremberg chronicle, p. 28). According to Sydney Cockerell (Some German Woodcuts of the 15th Century, Hammersmith, 1897, pp. 35f.), the 1809 woodcuts in the text (counting repetitions) are printed from 645 different blocks. Among the illustrations of highest artistic quality are not only the two maps, but also the beautiful city views (Augsburg, Bamberg, Basel, Breslau, Erfurt, Florence, Geneva, Genoa, Cologne, Constance, Cracow, Lübeck, Magdeburg, Milan, Mainz, Munich, Nizza, Nuremberg, Paris, Passau, Pisa, Prague, Regensburg, Rome, Salzburg, Strasbourg, Trier, Ulm, Venice, Vienna, Würzburg etc.) - frequently the first topographically exact depictions ever. Some of the woodcuts are probably the work of the young Albrecht Dürer, who lived next door to Wolgemut s workshop and had been learning the trade with him since 1486.For the alleged Pre-Columbian discovery of America by Martin Behaim from Nuremberg, an account contained only in this Latin edition (fol. 290v), see Sabin 77523 and Church 7.From the library of Dr. Louis Versturme (1758-1833), Inspector General of Hospitals, with his armorial bookplate at the lower edge of the title-page. Acquired by the banker James Mayer Rothschild (1792-1868), founder of the French branch of the prominent Rothschild family (armorial bookplate of the Château de Ferrières to front pastedown). The binding is somewhat rubbed, the extremeties more so, and the spine a bit faded. The title-page is rebacked, insignificant paper flaws to a few leaves, scattered browning and foxing. The last four leaves remargined without loss; foregoing leaves show some dampstaining to upper corner. Several leaves trimmed rather closely at the top edge, sometimes just touching the page header. [160] ll.A Rouen Book of Hours of outstanding quality and in slightly larger than usual format, commissioned by a female patron who is portrayed in the last miniature awaiting the arrival of the Messiah. The style of illumination is typical of that practised in Rouen during the late 15th century. Characteristic features include the profuse use of gold highlights on draperies and hillsides, often cross-hatched; cross-hatching of grassy areas in landscapes; a palette predominantly based on pink, blue, brown and green, and the use of grey for the modelling of facial features, men having rather swarthy flesh, and women very pale skin; the rather peremptory manner of painting hands; the grey-blue acanthus on flat gold backgrounds for borders. Also the liturgical use points to Rouen as the place of production: the sparse calendar includes St Romanus (23 October) in gold, as well as St Evodius (8 October) and Mellonus (22 October), all three were bishops of Rouen; Romanus and Mellonus also appear in the Litany. Prayers are written for the use of a female supplicant, and a conventional portrait of the original owner appears in the final miniature.Contents: calendar, in French (f. 1r); Gospel extracts (f. 13r); prayers "Obsecro te" and "O intemerata", using feminine forms (ff. 20v); Hours of the Virgin (f. 31r), Lauds followed by suffrages to the Holy Spirit, Nicholas, and Katherine; Seven Penitential Psalms (f. 83r) followed by (f. 98r) a Litany of saints (Clement, Fabian, and Sebastian, at the bottom of f. 100r, are mistakenly repeated at the top of the verso); Hours of the Cross (f. 105) and of the Spirit (f. 109r); Office of the Dead (f. 113r); "Les quinze joies nostre dame" (f. 151r) and "Les sept requestes" of the Lord (f. 157r), both in French.Illumination: the calendar (ff. 1r-12v) has occupations of the months on rectos, and zodiac signs on versos. [18], 278; 112; 70; 132 ll.First edition of this beautifully illustrated Dutch translation of the influential Luther Bible, with the engraved title-page, all plates and a large tailpiece expertly contemporary hand-coloured and strikingly highlighted in gold. This edition, published by (the widow of) Van Baardt, is also known as the "Visscher Bible", after its translator. It is certain that Visscher based his translation on Luther's original Bible and the two known Dutch translations: the "Lotter Bible" by Bugenhagen (1554) and the "Biestkens Bible" (1560). Apparently, Visscher did not use the new and by then already renowned Dutch States translation (commissioned during the Synod of Dordrecht in 1618-1619) and did not want to change Luther's original translation, which unfortunately resulted in a difficult to read work. Nevertheless, this became the standard Bible of the Dutch Lutherans. (Darlow & Moule). The present work was printed by Rieuwert Dircksz van Baardt (1599-1648) - according to I.H. van Eeghen - at the presses of Lodewijk III Elsevier (1604-1670). The work was published after Van Baardt's death by his widow and was illustrated with engraved maps by Nicolaes Visscher (1618-1679) after his father Claes Jansz. Visscher (1587-1652) and a complete series of Mattheüs Merian the Elder's (1593-1650) reduced scenes engraved by Cornelis Danckerts (1603-1656) and printed by Frederik de Wit (1630-1706) in Amsterdam. These two sets of engraved plates were published separately for the purpose of being added to Bibles such as the present one, or the Dutch States Bible for example. The illustrations are expertly hand-coloured and all highlighted in gold. With the small bookplate of Jan Willem Six de Vromade (1872-1936): "Ex bibliotheca J.W. Six" on the front paste-down. The binding shows very slight signs of wear, mainly around the spine, minor foxing and spotting throughout, mainly to the outer margins, with a ca. 4 cm tear in the foot margin of leaves a5 and a6 in the New Testament, without loss but slightly affecting the text, the last ca. 10% of the leaves show a very small (to max. ca. 1 cm in the last few leaves) wormhole in the gutter margin, barely affecting the commentary but not the main text. 30, [1], [1 blank] pp.; pllus 100 lithographed plates.Extremely rare first edition, of the complete collection of plates prepared from drawings made by master architect Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) at his Oak Park Studio, illustrating seventy buildings and projects completed between 1893 and 1909. It is the first major publication by one of the greatest innovators of modern architecture. The work boosted Wright's fame in European architectural circles and influenced key figures in contemporary architecture including Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Peter Behrens and Le Corbusier. The plates show perspective views, plans, sections and interior and exterior details. Plate LVI, with an interior view of the living room of the Coonley House, is one of the most important and desirable of the series. Other works represented are the Frederic Robie House, Susan Lawrence Dana House, Ward Willets House, Darwin Martin House, Avery Coonley House, the Larkin Building, and Unity Temple, showing the variety of his buildings.Although each plate is embossed with Wright's blind stamp, Sweeney notes that Wright completed the work alongside assistants and collaborators, including Marion Mahony Griffin and Wright's son, Lloyd. The work was printed by Ernest Wasmuth, a massive undertaking. The original plans and presentation drawings had to be lithographed on large stones. The text volume, written by Wright, was printed both in German and in English, containing an essay on his architectural style and a list of the plates. The text part starts with the introduction by Wright, translated into German by Wasmuth, and is dated ''Florenz, Italien, 15. Mai 1910'' and is followed by an annotated list of plates (pp. 21-30). An English version of the introduction was printed in Chicago by Ralph Fletcher Seymour being dated "Florence, Italy, June 1910".The edition is scarce due to a fire at Wright s home and studio, Taliesin, in August 1914. The fire destroyed the bulk of the American copies of this portfolio, in addition to much of Wright s other work. So many of the copies intended for the American market were destroyed, with the result that the work was far better known in Europe than in the United States. The wrappers and ties of the two portfolios are browned, both spines are worn (with the portfolios otherwise still intact) and the front board of portfolio II shows a seriously water damaged spot. All text leaves, plates and plates on overlay paper are foxed, the edges of the plates and overlays are show very slight water stains and are occasionally slightly frayed and browned, the overlays of plates LVIII and IL show a marginal tear, not affecting the image. The main surface of the plates (including the whole or the majority of the designs) are fine and clean. Overall a complete set with the plates, booklet and the two original publisher's portfolios still in good condition, being Wright's extremely rare magnum opus that secured his status in Europe: one of the most influential architectural publications of the century.l Kruft 210; Robert L.
