Spine rubbed. Edges of boards rubbed. 1/2" tears and 3/8" chips to leather at ends of spine. ; [16], 1-13, (15)-165 pages. Pages are numbered by hand (number 14 was skipped in the numbering). Autograph manuscript commonplace book, consisting of poems from other authors (generally unnamed) and some prose. Contemporary half leather and green patterned paper boards. Gilt rule to spine and gilt tooled decorations to leather on boards. All page edges gilt. Page dimensions: 180 x 112mm. Very neat handwriting. Includes several poems relating to Napoleon. Owner's name "Miss Eliza Spencer / Hereford Oct. 4th 1839". Inscription by the owner in French, written in lines arranged of decreasing length arranged as a triangle shape. Also an 8 line dedication in verse by the owner - "This little book, with all the prize / Its varied page implants; / I dedicate to gentle eyes / And sympathizing hearts; / There all who bring their smile or tear / may fearless drop the gem, / For common sense shall ne'er come here / To praise them or condemn." Contents handwritten over 10 pages. Poems include: Napoleon; Beauty and Time; Woman; When We Two Parted (Byron); Life; Hidden Worth; The Summer Zephyr; Herefordshire; Home; The Happy Country-Maid; The Moon-beam; Farewell; To A Wife; Early Piety; Byron's Farewell to his Wife; The Man of Ross (Pope); The Beggar's Malison; Afar in the Desert; Napoleon Dying. Prose passages include: Gibbon; Female Education; Civility and its Opposite. Loosely included is one further poem on blue stationery paper "The Prison Bell - wirtten by a convict in Pentonville Prison" and a bookmark embroidered with "Meet me in Heaven".
