Inhaltsangabe: Here is the diary of Peter Faber, a sincere, unself- ish, and compassionate man who rises to a posi- tion of great power without once having abandoned his ideals, who strives for justice in the midst of moral decay and spiritual cynicism.

The diary of this humble and unpretentious priest, reveals the tortuous road he traveled to retain his sense of purpose. Skillfully and dramatically Dr. Edward Carben draws the reader along as Peter Faber confronts homosexuality in the priesthood, sexual problems among nuns, terrifying examples of violence and bigotry, myriad Church scandals and frauds, charges of heresy, heated battles between priests, concern with money and vanity rather than with the spirit, and other seemingly insurmountable problems for a young novitiate. With a distinctive narrative flair, Dr. Carben portrays Faber?s conflicts as he experiences his own temptations and as he deals with such controversial issues as
divorce, contraception, and abortion.

Above all, the diary shows Faber to be thoroughly human, with the weaknesses and vulnerabilities that beset all men. It shows him unable to control his temper when confronted by more backward elements in the Church; almost coming to blows with the abbot responsible for the death of his best friend. The diary?s description of his love affair with a young girl shows Faber to be loving, sensitive, and unambiguously honest.

The diary describes not only Peter Faber?s religious, political, and social ideas, but his immediate involvements with the perennial problems of mankind as well. Not only does he comfort the lonely, help the poor, and minister to the old, sick, and dying, but he becomes involved in fighting ignorance, racial and ethnic prejudice, and exploitation of the weak by the strong. Whether it means becoming the central and much criticized figure in a riot at a local reformatory, comforting a little girl dying of leukemia, or risking his own life to save the life of a potential suicide, Peter Faber is there.

THE DIARY OF A CATHOLIC BISHOP - INNERMOST SECRETS OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH REVEALED lays bare the entire structure of the inner workings of the Catholic Church, past as well as present. Yet it is a universal work, since it deals not only with the religion of institutions but religion of the heart. It will prove fascinating to anyone who has had to struggle with the questions that present themselves to the thinking men and women of this and every age. It is a compelling look at the nature of love, sacrifice, and commitment in a world hovering on the brink of darkness, confusion, and peril.
