Finely Restored - Modern spine and original Cambridge boards both measuring 15.5 x 10", folios. In good condition. Modern spines present well - title labels clean & gilt lettering bright. Original Cambridge boards generally worn with scuffed edges and bumped corners. Some scratch marks visible on leather boards, but they remain attractive. Modern end-pages (both volumes, front and rear) exhibit some toning around edges and corners. Previous ownership signature found, in old hand, on Vol. II's original front fly-leaf: John Fallows. Normal toning and age-related wear throughout text-blocks; some small instances of age-staining. Vol. II's title page is crimped at fore-edge, but remains intact. A complete work - all pages intact in both volumes. Some instances of finger-soiling around bottom corners of leaves. Modern binding tight and intact. Please see photos and ask questions, if any, before purchasing. William Salmon (1644-1713) was an English empiric doctor and a writer of medical texts. He advertised himself as a "Professor of Physick". Salmon held an equivocal place in the medical community. He led apothecaries in opposing attempts by physicians to control the dispensing of medicines, and was desired by physicians as "the King of the Quacks." Salmon set up business near the Smithfield gate of St. Bartholomew's Hospital in London, where he could attract patients who did not receive treatment at the hospital. He treated diseases, compounded and sold prescriptions, cast horoscopes, and studied alchemy. By 1681, he had moved to the Red Balls in Salisbury Court off Fleet Street. Salmon produced proprietary medicinal products including pills, powers, elixirs and lozenges. Salmon's published works covered an incredibly wide range of topics. In part, he was able to publish so prolifically because large sections of his texts were "copied, translated, abridged, enlarged, and compiled form the texts of others." Salmon openly acknowledged that much of his work was derivative. In 1710-1711, Salmon published Botanologia; or the English Herbal (2 Vols.), dedicated to Anne, Queen of Great Britain. He mentions his travels in the British colonies of North America, making the first known reference to the tomato's cultivation there, in what is now the Carolinas. He also extols the virtues of the Virginian potato. Preparations of cannabis root are suggested for the treatment of gout, arthritis, and painful joints. Incredibly extensive list of herbs, plants, and vegetables. Over 1,000 engravings (1,072), which all present very well. Beautifully and finely re-backed, retailing original Cambridge bound boards.
